I'm having an issue where it forces me to log in every time I restart the computer or change users.  I've got "remember last login" checked so pretty sure that isn't it.  smile

I preferred the UI before, would be nice if they'd give the option of reverting it.  I also don't like that it automatically defaults to broadcasting everything I buy, trying to figure out how to turn that off.  I like being able to categorize the library, however hate the look of it.  That sums up a lot of my attitude, I like that they added functionality, dislike the look of almost all of it and want more control over which functionality I actually use.

I appreciate how they've tried to put more related info on each page and make it easier to find your game stats, etc., but I don't like how the layouts tend to look big and cluttered and some of the text is just huge.  Maybe there are some more customization options but I haven't messed with it much.

Yeah, i suppose it did.  Would be nice if I could turn that off & selectively allow who sees me in each game.  Then again, I realized I've only added about 3 people to my steam friends list so it really doesn't matter much.

as long as they don't start enforcing you to use it, then i don't see the problem.  now, if they go and pull a MS points deal where you have to have a minimum order to use CC or use the wallet, then we'll have problems.

does this means they can start hawking stuff to us in-game?

You can already do that with direct bank account transfers to a Paypal account. That's what we do for our son and it works great. It can take up to 8 days to go through, but that has the added advantage of forcing him to really consider his next purchase. To prevent him from missing out on great weekend deals we usually just keep it topped with $30. As well, he can use Paypal for other online game stores. I don't see how this is much better than Paypal except that it limits purchases to Steam - not sure if that's a (+) or (-).

Surely it's futile but I Recommended Alien Breed 3: Descent ($8.99, just bought it last night) to all those people on my Steam friends list (maybe 3 of whom even actually know me).  icon_razz

Funny - a perhaps Russian friend recommended RUSE, saying:

Чтобы победить - нужно врать. Отличная игра
Apparently means:
Quote
To win - you need to lie. Perfect game
Sounds about right.  icon_smile

I bought Railworks a year ago during a sale and played it for about 20 hours.  Now it's recommending a bunch of $20 DLC for it.  Actually any DLC I don't own for games I do own seems like an automatic recommendation- like I really want to spend $3.50 on a holiday themed character skins pack for a game I finished a year and a half ago.

I've bought a few cheap casual games (Undergarden, Zen Bound 2, Bloody Good Time, etc.) so it's recommending a bunch of stuff like that.  But I'm spending far more hours in Fallout New Vegas and Borderlands than all of those other games combined and see no recommendations based on those.

I think you hit the nail on the head and pinned the tail on the donkey. Those games don't need recommendations any more than say, Call of Duty: Black Ops does. You'll probably see more recommendations of obscure games you hadn't considered - so far that's what I'm seeing in mine too. Doesn't mean the blockbusters aren't fine, just that people might be more inclined to Recommend for the little guy.

In a way, there's always been a "subliminal recommendations" thing going on with the Steams friends list in terms of seeing what your friends list friends are playing and saying "woah, what's THAT game?"

I'm trying to have some fun with mine and not just say "This game is KEWL U SHOULD BUY IT DOOOD!!!!!!!" Although that's probably fun to say, too.  icon_smile

afik, the feature isn't yet "smart" enough to know if your friends' recommending a game you already have. It seems to just go out to everybody on your list. I have no doubt they'll eventually find a way to enable it to skip people that already have the game.

The two recommendations I've gotten so far were:

- A strategy guide for a game I don't own.
- A game I already own through Steam.

I think it needs a little more polish. Tongue

Couple new sub-$10 recs (from Steam, not friends) I received just might suit me:

Ion Assault (indie space arcade shooter with "dynamic intensity" that throws more at you, the better you do)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/41730/
*Alas, forum feedback is that while it's OK in its console iteration, it's a mess on PC and doesn't natively support gamepads.

Pound of Ground (cartoony 3rd person zombie shooter published by Bohemia Interactive of Operation Flashpoint fame)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/33980/

I've never heard of either of them. One bud who plays Alien Breed/Alien Swarm bought it earlier this month, so I might see what he thinks about it.

How did I never hear of Nation Red on Steam (overhead zombie shooter)? Why isn't that coming up on my Recommendations?   confused icon_smile
http://store.steampowered.com/app/39800/
I'm hoping that'll be in the holiday sales at some point, but I might pick it up soon ($9.99) anyway.

Although some assume it is similar to Alien Swarm because of the view perspective (you can pull down to something closer to isometric via mouse wheel), it doesn't seem to have maps you move through as much as a changing series of "arenas" in which to survive the zombie swarms. The tutorial makes it seem easy, but the demo's one campaign mission kicked my tush repeatedly at various difficulty levels.

Holiday sales are fine, though I think it also pays to just look at the entire list of playable demos on Steam and keep clicking until something tickles your fancy.  icon_cool

yeah, it's the thing that pops up when you start games and you have to hit a combination of keys to make it go away, but the same combo brings it back so you can access your friends list.  I thin it also enables Steam chat while you're running the game.  personalkly I turned mine off after I found it it could affect your frame rate in game.

What if your game uses F12 (i.e. flight sims)?  Granted you can change the screenshot default key or maybe change F12 within the game itself,  but seems like this could be a minor pain in the ass.

It sounds like hitting the key combo to bring up said overlay, at which point your keystrokes are no longer registered in-game. It would seem to me that would make the most sense, given they specify support of the Steam Overlay as a prereq.

Edit: after reading the article, it's pretty clear that (by default) F12 now overrides the game in processing the keystroke (just as the combination to bring up the steam overlay overrides actions in the game) and you would NOT bring up the overlay first.

They also list the ability to change the key, so if F12 is needed (or desired) in-game it's all good - just change the steam screenshot key.

F12 has been pretty traditionally the screenshot button for games, so does the F12 matter to you if you're getting a screenshot in steam or in your flight-sim screenshot folder? The fact that they have upload ability and some management, I imagine this would be a better thing than just one screenshot file on a harddrive somewhere.

big update today, including the screenshot feature:

Quote
New Features and UI updates

Steam Screenshots

•Added support for Steam Screenshots. Press F12 while in any game that runs the Steam Overlay to take screenshots, then publish them to your Steam Community profile, or anywhere else on the web. Each user is allotted 1 GB of Steam Cloud storage for screenshots.

Library Search capability and related navigation updates

•Added Search capability to the library for quick filtering of your list. Press Tab to move focus to and from the search field, press Esc to clear the search.

•Moved access to all library sub views (Games, Media Tools, Downloads, etc.) into the library's dropdown control

Voice quality improvements

•Changed microphone voice input from 11 kHz to 16 kHz

•Changed voice output from 8 kHz to 16 kHz

•Fixed the settings-dialog microphone test to correctly re-init the calibration client if the active voice device changes

•Reduced voice prefix buffer size from 200 to 100 ms, but increased trailing from 200 to 400 ms - reduces latency when transitioning from silence to active voice, but still should keep it from sounding like chat is cutting out mid-sentence

•Increased thresholds for voice activity detection, making it less sensitive

•Increased amount of gain applied to voice

•Changed disconnect message when a friend ends a voice call to ' has ended the call'
•Windows: Fixed microphone to reinitialize correctly if Windows signals that a device in the system has changed

•Windows: Changed voice output device for Steam to be the default communication device

Web addresses

•Added an option to display the client's URL address bar, and turned it off by default, given its limited utility

•Web views now include a "Copy Page URL" command in the context menu, to copy the page's web address to the clipboard

Game invites

•Moved game invites from friends outside of the chat stream, into their own panel in the chat dialog for improved discoverability

Account security

•Added password strength meter to the Change Password wizard

•Added a prompt to choose a new password if you've recently had Steam Support change your password on your behalf

General bug fixes

•Fixed game invites not working from lobby-based games

•Fixed games not launching automatically after resolving a cloud conflict

•Fixed download rate sometimes erroneously reporting very high speeds

•Fixed a crash on startup or when viewing Games page

•Fixed client hang which could occur while hovering on links in any HTML-based display area

•Corrected check box states in the Friends window menu to properly remain in sync

•Fixed bug where some downloadable content was not downloaded until the client was restarted

•Fixed a rare and small, but steady memory leak caused by the Steam Overlay in some full screen D3D10/D3D11 games

•Mac OS X: Fixed a problem where attempting to resume a paused/interrupted download could always report ‘server unavailable’

•Mac OS X: Fixed password input fields in the Steam Overlay to correctly receive input
