no, we do not need a hot coffee scandal for gta4.  why feed the troll lawyer anything?  he'll find something to be pissed about on his own.

yeah.  i want a refund damnit.

i did get a call from that aeris woman today, and apparently the store i preordered at is doing a midnight monday madness launch.  now i need to come up with a good reason to tell the wife.  somehow, "i need to get a game 10 hours early on a worknight" doesn't sound like it will cut it.

i am anxious to do it though, even if i get little time to play it.  i love the launch day rush.

btw, what kind of moron do you have to be to play gta4 early on your usual gamertag, let alone a live tag and while connected?  why don't you put just email ms and save them the trouble of hunting you down.  they've said they would be cracking down on early players for a week now.  i think it's a bit shitty to go after everyone playing it early as it's not against the law to play before launch, and this kid could just have easily found a cluesless clerk who sold it anyways.  hell, i'd be playing it now too if i were him.  i just wouldn't be so damn obvious to the system that i was.

I hereby deem, with no authority whatsoever, that whomever gets the game first starts an official impressions thread so we can send this atrocity to the bottom of the all time threads list.

As I won't be at a midnight opening, I won't have my copy until around 10 AM eastern, so it won't be me. Sorry Lee.  icon_wink

You know that no impression thread actually has impressions on the first page, right?

Wait...this is the second page already... Where's those impressions?!

i second this thought.  first, it clears up any potential confusion about where actual impressions are. second, it can serve to annoy anyone who goes looking for them after the fact.  icon_twisted

i take it that no one actually got a store to sell it early?

From what I've seen on other forums the only people who've gotten stores to break street date are in the UK. frown

Just so this thread has some purpose, I'm going to paste some impressions some one posted on another forum I go to. These are all from the same guy.

Quote
I love it. But then, I loved the last one and this is very close. The setting is different, but this is most definitely a GTA game. If you didn't like the last few (since they went 3D), then this one is probably not going to appeal either.

I'm still near the start, so there's a lot I haven't seen yet. But it's the typical gangster story setup. I think this one is trying to take itself a bit more seriously than the last one. There's still a lot of humor on billboards and the radio and such, but the actual storyline and so on seems to be pretty straight.

What I loved about the last one and what seems to have continued in this one is the amount of detail. the city is very convincing and realistic, except that there are too many car crashes. But apart from that, it's very much a breathing world. A small example of what I like - you can go bowling. You walk from the street into the building , no load times. You walk up to the counter and pay. then you look at the lanes and see which ones are free. You walk up to a free lane and the bowling game begins. There's no seam, no stop/start stuff. It's very fluid. You can really immerse yourself in the game world.

All the RPG stuff is gone, no more stats or anything. So however you run or shoot or swim at the beginning is how you'll continue throughout.

And I've already come across two 'Hot Coffee' jokes.

Anyway. Loving it, loving it.

Quote
I loved SA because there was so much to do. Those that were put off by this will like GTAIV more, as it's been seriously pared back. Apart from core missions, you can do cop vigilante missions, some date games (bowling, darts and pool) and that's about it. I'm a bit sad about this, as I liked all that peripheral shit in SA.

You can change your clothes, but there's not a very wide selection. You can't change your hair, get tattoos or anything like that.

There's more of a focus on combat. There's snap-on aiming and cover mechanics. It's pretty tight and its worked well so far for me.

The driving is a little floaty/slidey for my liking, but its OK.

Perhaps the best feature are taxis. They're everywhere, and you can even phone for one if there's not one right there. For a small amount of cash you can transport anywhere on the map, meaning that if your next mission is all the way across town and you can't be fucked driving, you can just zip there. This is a great option.

I'm at around 25% and so far there's not much to spend money on. You get some clothes, you buy weapons as needed and that's about it. I don't know if you can buy property later. The game was billed as being 'not rags-to-riches but rags-to-better-rags', so i don't think you'll end up owning mansions and casinos. We'll have to see.

So yeah, pretty tight controls. Missions are the same, either driving, shooting or both. And the game has basically been stripped back a bit to its core gameplay. Some will prefer this, personally I preferred all that shit. But I'm still really enjoying it. The plots pretty good too. Great voice acting.

IGN Podcats review dispute basically what that guy said about "side missions" and so forth".  They said you could "dick around" in this game for like forever. There are enormous amopunt of things to do besides the main missions.

the teamxbox review says 'despite what some people have said who have played the game already,i experienced very little pop-up'

good to know, but i was pretty much confident that it was going to spoil that much playing anyway

EDIT: Kotaku now have their review up

they are gonna post the differences between the two versions(PS3/360)  in about 30 minutes  is up now!!

The PlayStation 3 version has a mandatory 3.4 GB hard drive installation that will be the longest 7 minutes and 20 seconds of your life if your chomping at the bit to play.

sorry Grue,LOL

interesting parts from the Kotaku..i had to write them down to copy them as i dont have copy and paste on this PS3 browser

'Xbox360 version seemed capable of achieving smoother framerate peaking higher in certain circumstances, such as in confined spaces or during light traffic, but both versions seemed to regularly run at a similar clip'

'the 360 can suffer from some very noticable texture loading as things like trees, vehicles and building signs will regularly pop in as one tools around town,...and the PS3 version isnt entirely immune from it,but it isnt a game killing problem'

i think the simple matter is,that both versions will be the nuts

In Eurogamer's review (another 10) they said they'll be doing a 360 vs. PS3 comparison article next week.  I can't imagine anyone being so undecided that they hold off buying it on launch day, though.

Wow, after watching that review, I am SO ready for this game. They review the Xbox 360 version and if you look closely, you can see some minor texture pop-up, but the game looks so polished and so slick, it doesn't really matter.

The only thing to figure out now is whether to get the PS3 or 360 version...

btw, what kind of moron do you have to be to play gta4 early on your usual gamertag, let alone a live tag and while connected?  why don't you put just email ms and save them the trouble of hunting you down.  they've said they would be cracking down on early players for a week now.  i think it's a bit shitty to go after everyone playing it early as it's not against the law to play before launch, and this kid could just have easily found a cluesless clerk who sold it anyways.  hell, i'd be playing it now too if i were him.  i just wouldn't be so damn obvious to the system that i was.

Unless something changed, MS doesn't ban early players for any games. Are they saying something different for GTA? Apparently the pirates already have it, but that's different. I'd play it online if someone would sell it to me. smile

Seems a little hypocritical that some of you are complaing that there are no impressions yet continue your impressionless contributions to the thread slywink It's GTA4 man, it's all anyone in the industry is talking about, no surprise the impressions thread surpassed the standard of the first page having no impressions.

Anyways, I was sorta jipped. I got to play the game for a whopping 15 minutes or so last night at the store before I had to leave, the manager I know is (intelligently) not risking his neck by taking a copy home. I played the 360 version and these are my observations:

- The graphics don't have nearly as much texture pop-in as I was expecting, perhaps over the course of 40-50 hours I'm sure you could tally all the moments up and say it has it worse than the PS3 version, but on a general level I think I noticed it only a few times. As far as jaggies go, again the PS3 version may do AA better but if you've played other 360 games you know what to expect. If Forza is on the bottom end of the spectrum with the most jaggies, and Gears of War is on the high end with the least, GTA4 to me is closer towards GoW. Jaggies are NOT an issue here people.

- Load times... Really don't effect anything. Once the game is loaded it's loaded, I went into a few indoor areas and there was zero loading. Perhaps the reviews are simply referring to the initial load when starting the game and jumping into multiplayer matches (as you can guess, I didn't try)

- The cars handle great to me, SUVs and huge ass cars have unresponsive handling similar to, whadda ya know, real life, and smaller cars are much more nimble.

- The targeting system rocks, granted I was only able to get my hands on a pistol and a submachine gun, GTA4 is light years ahead of the previous games. Gun fights are actually FUN! Before I used to avoid them if I could but I think starting gun fights with random thugs is going to be as exciting as hijacking cars was when GTA3 first came out. The awesome physics accentuate that fact.

- The physics, oh the physics are a sight to behold. I found myself purposely jumping in front of oncoming traffic just to see what would happen and it was a riot every time.

So there's my inhumanely short impressions. I pretty much established that all the reviews said about the graphics engine and the like but what I was most surprised by was how good the game looks on the 360, honestly I hardly noticed any jaggies OR texture pop-in which has convinced me to stick to my original 360 pre-order. I didn't get to see the PS3 version but I can't imagine it looking better enough for me to pass up on the DLC and MP opportunities I'll have on the 360.

I skipped a bunch of the gametrailer review for fear of spoilers, but man is my excitement level overflowing.  The multiplayer clips looked like so, so, so much fun.

I'm curious how they'll handle opening up the city for multiplayer though if people have different levels of completion.  The eurogamer review said it'd take in the neighborhood of 12 hours to unlock the whole map, so it'd be kind of a bummer if we were limited to Brooklyn for our first nights of multiplayer.

Question:

Do you think the game will be individually packed in a case in each collector's edition?     I say this because I've hatched an even more devious overall plan:

1.  Got PS3 CE version preordered
2.  Got 360 version in queue to rent through gamefly for multiplay
3.  Once done with single play on PS3, sell that copy and buy 360 Copy while keeping the CE stuff.    In other words, a month or so from now I'll take the pS3 version in it's case with instructions and sell it and pick up a copy of the 360 version for multiplay in the coming months without having to keep my gamefly tied up.

This is all assuming that the collector's editions -- like most games -- have the game in a shrinkwrapped normal case inside the collector's edition packaging.

Turns out they're using that new NaturalMotion/Euphoria tech that makes models animate with AI movements.  E.g. self preservation, etc...  It's the stuff you saw in Force Unleashed and the Indiana Jones game.

I dunno, I'm thinking that if there's any leftover CEs for the PS3, I'll get it.  If only because I noticed there is a decent sized Art of GTA book inside.  I collect those kind of books.
