Gears of War:Judgement Update: The new installment in Epic's billion-dollar franchise is Gears of War: Judgment. The July cover of Game Informer shows series mainstay Damon Baird shackled as the Locust hordes rage around him. Augustus "Cole Train" Cole, soldier and world-famous Thrashball player, dons our second cover image in the same precarious situation.
Check out both of the beautiful covers below, keep an eye out for the issue in your mailbox and on newsstands, and check back Monday for more information on Gears of War: Judgment's multiplayer mode. On Monday we'll launch our Gears of War: Judgment hub, along with a coverage trailer for all the exclusive Gears content you have to look forward to throughout July. Also on Monday you can use Game Informer's new iPad app to read all about Gears of War: Judgment and the rest of our content-packed July issue.

Cliffy B wants to up the difficulty this time around: Belszinski believes the reason Demon's Souls and Dark Souls have been so popular is because "they really require you to actually try."
It seems Belszinski wants the same for Gears of War: Judgment. "Casual mode will still be casual, whatever, if you just want to see graphics and you don't want to die," he said. "But every other mode will be hard in this game, and you will die."

MetacriticFrom the Eurogamer review What new developer People Can Fly has done is tweak the structure and tone. The game is now broken up into short, punchy sections bookended by leaderboards rather than drawn-out levels. Each section lasts maybe 10 minutes on normal difficulty and contains, at most, two firefights. Some are Horde-style fortification scenarios in which you must hold your ground against waves of enemies. Most are the sort of shooting galleries you expect from a Gears title.
This bite-sized presentation changes the tempo of the game, placing a new emphasis on replaying for score. Every section also offers a Declassified Mission - essentially an optional modifier for the encounters ahead. You might be restricted to specific weapon types, face tougher enemies or a claustrophobic time limit, or have your vision limited by smoke or gas. It really does not sound like my kind of game

Meh. I'm in no matter what. Sounds more bulletstormy (which sucks) but Gears is my favorite IP this gen, so I got to see it through.
Oh and if the coop/competitive sucks, I can go back to Gears 3...which still an absolute blast.

As am I, but Gears has always been known for having decent bots to practice offline with in the mutliplayer modes. (Since Gears 2 anyway) With the singleplayer campaign you're going to beat it eventually anyway.. then what, trade it in or just let it collect dust? That's what makes bots so appealing to me, that no matter how many years go by, you get unlimited replay value even if MS decides to shut the servers down (not that they've ever done that..) you get a different experience each time as the game lives on forever. I'd still be playing Tribes Aerial Assault (PS2) bots if my BC PS3 didn't die.

Well- had my first taste of this game last night.
So far, I absolutely love the campaign and the declassified missions.
MP...is a very mixed bag.
FFA is an absolute hoot and so far the only mode I enjoy. It's exactly what you think it is -everyone vs everyone- and it has produced the best moments so far. It's so great to come across two guys battling it out, both weakening eachother, and then you come from the flank and kill them both. Hawt.
TDM, so far, is an absolute mess. I spend more time looking for enemies than fighting them due to the map size (this doesn't seem to be the case in FFA due to the spawn placement). TDM in Gears 3 (and pretty much the whole series, frankly) has been absolutely incredible and never got boring in playing this series for 7 years. Hopefully my opinion will change with more experience, maps, etc.
Other big cons:
Grenade spam. Yep. COD Grenade spam is everywhere now. It's one of the first things anyone does in any encounter...quick toss a grenade.
Healing grenades: OP to the extreme. You can dump a full blast of a vulcan cannon at someone while they are in the ring of health and they just take it. It's terrible.
But the biggest problem in MP right now is the melee. It is so completely overpowering that it unbalances everything else. People are using it as a primary weapon. Two big problems with it specifically: It does a huge amount of damage and the recovery time for the person doing the hitting is almost instantaneous.
In the former case, as I said, people are using an OP combination that basically turns the game into halo. Run at the enemy firing and whoever melee's first wins. In the latter, the fact that you can melee and fire a shotgun blast before the person you hit can do anything means if you use that technique you win 90% of the heads on encounters and it takes almost no skill.
That said, the verticality adds some spice to the versus gameplay. It's fun jumping down and surprising and being surprised.
So far the game for campaign is an A and for MP is a C. Which is a 180 from every other gears game.

Oh and one more thing: The one weapon policy has turned Gears into an all Gnasher all the time game. It's all about close quarters and if you go into a match using a ranged weapon you're at a huge disadvantage. I had great variety in my kills across almost all weapons in Gears 3, but 77% of my kills (after one night) are with the shottie. I don't see why this percentage would get any smaller...
In any event, I think this was the exact opposite of what the designers were trying for. I don't mind as I'm pretty good with that gun, but it's actually less n00b friendly.

Oh! And the sound is kind of bad too. Since everyone is COG you can never tell when an enemy or friend is coming and since most maps are vertical, you can't tell if the sound is on the same level as you or not.

Good impressions, ATB! I strongly considered this game during last week's B2G1 sale at Target, but ultimately decided against it due to middling reviews. The direction of posts like these make it all the more certain that I'll wait until it's $30 or less so I can at least shoot up the campaign. -Autistic Angel

They seem to be far FAR better when subbing for humans. The ones in Gears 3 would spin in circles and do nothing. These seem appropriately aggressive, but not quite as good as people.

ATB-
Can you speak a little more about the SP campaign. Gears has been one of my favorite series of this generation, but I don't play multiplayer. I've read that Judgement is almost solely focused on multiplayer, and the campaign is fragmented, the missions are very short, and there are no "epic" set pieces.
Is it worth a purchase for SP only?

It's too soon to tell. I've played through about four or five checkpoints and so far I'm really having fun. The declassified mechanic has already proven to be a boon to replay as I'll only get 2 out of 3 stars and immediately launch back into replaying the section- what's neat about it is that the game is played as testimony for the trial of the kilo squad and the declassified missions add to the fiction. One for example replaces a type of enemy unit with another making it harder and the commentary is like 'they said that lambent so and so's didn't emerge until...blah blah but i know that they were there day one' and bang there are the harder lambent based enemies. Another mission adds an insta-death timer (but a fiction appropriate one) at the end of it that has you racing forward to get to the checkpoint. This was neat for me as in Gears, I've got collectible OCD and I explore every inch trying to find tags and other stuff, so bursting through the environments to keep the squad alive was refreshing. The 'scoring' mechanic never really has done anything for me in any other game, but i love Gears so much that it's added a new wrinkle that I enjoy so far...

Went back to Gears 3 last night for MP. GOWJ is just not fun. Played a couple of matches on Gears 3 and it is just so much more nuanced and strategic.
Gonna try to work through the campaign (though the critique that it is just a bunch of horde levels with a cutscene here and there is seeming more and more appropriate). Saw a comment to the effect of 'I want to be having fun when I'm playing, but I'm not.' Seems right.
Fact that I bought the GOWJ season pass may be the only thing that prevents me from trading it in. But man is this a bummer.
And Dante, my guess is this game is going to drop in price very quickly, so just wait a few weeks.

gears warzone mode found on disc, and its playableAfter booting the game, choose Private Match and highlight Team Death Match, and press A. At the next prompt press the A and B buttons simultaneously. When it says "You are about to start a match. Continue?", press A again. Gamers who discovered Warzone have been left wondering whether the hidden mode is intended as paid DLC. But an employee of developer Epic Games has suggested its inclusion was simply a mistake - a remnant of game code being ported over from Gears of War 3.
"Thanks for the heads up, was easier to leave Warzone refs than rip out," said senior multiplayer programmer Peter Knepley in response to a fan on Twitter.
"It's not the polished Execution of April 2nd," Kneply continued, referencing another mode due for release. "I'd never say never, but Execution is way more popular than Warzone
