has anybody been watching these on gamertrailers.com...they are really good, they are 10minute or so vids...6 parts up to now(there are gonna be 13 parts and 1 comes out each week)showing how they all began and right through the years....tha last one that has just been on(number 6) was about FF8 and 9

part 1...final fantasy on the NES
part 2...final fantasy 2 and 3 for the Famicom
part 3...final fantasy 4 for the super nintendo and final fantasy 5 for the super famicom
part 4...final fantasy 6 for the super nintendo
part 5....final fantasy 7 for the playstation
part 6...final fantasy 8 and 9 for the playstation

in each one it also talks about the reamkes and spin offs of that particular FFnumber...like in the FF7 vid it also talks briefly about dirge of ceberus etc...and if anything they are a good walk down memory lane, and will guarentee you digging the old titles out to play again

go check 'em out

They're really good.  I've been watching them as they come out and it makes me want to replay those SNES ones.

They have a Zelda and a Metroid retrospective series as well.

I read about that.  They couldn't get permission to use any clips from the movie studio so they really couldn't do much with it.

Plus the movie was bloated and overbearing.

Yep I did!

there was also Final Fantasy Adventure...played a lot like a zelda game with realtime combat instead of turn-based.  pretty fun game for the original gameboy.

Final Fantasy Adventure, also known as a Seiken Densetsu (Secret of Mana) game. Name changed when released in the US due to Final Fantasy being just a bit more popular than SoM. Later rereleased as Sword of Mana in 2003 if I remember right.

IIRC, Sword of Mana was a remake (ie new gameplay but same story).

There were 4 GB FF games.  Three were FF style turn based RPGs, and one was, as mentioned, an "...of Mana" style action RPG.

I had them all (and finished them), but the FF Adventure one wasn't all that great.

[edit]  I've noticed handhelds always get skipped in series retrospectives.  Both Zelda and Metroid generally end up this way.  Especially Zelda, which is sad since the handheld Zeldas are excellent (Metroid II on the GB kind of sucked, though).

Really, I seem to remember sections of the Zelda retrospective talking about all of the handheld games and while I haven't watched all of the Metroid episodes yet, I though I saw reference to Metroid Fusion in one of the previews.

As for FF, given that they are almost done with the core series but have a lot of episodes to go, I expect several of them to discuss the various spinoff titles, including the handhelds.

Well, starting with, it seems, the GBA SP, handhelds have been getting more respect.  So I expect to see that trend no longer applying (especially with Wii games which started on the GBA or DS and are moving over).

And with the DS and PSP, handhelds are really being taken seriously.  I'll bet Sony for one never expected the PSP to be their biggest selling next-gen system.

None of the GB games were really Final Fantasy games, though.  The three FF Legend games were actually the SaGa series and (as mentioned above) FF Adventure was a Mana game.  They just renamed them as Final Fantasy when they were released in the US.  That's probably why they're not considered part of the franchise.

Sacrilege! I actually STILL own the original Final Fantasy Adventure cart from my old Game Boy and play it occasionally. I don't know why, I've just always loved it. icon_wink The Legend games were great too, especially the 2nd, which was my favorite of the three. I still own that one too. Strange how the SaGa games (though I have yet to play Romancing SaGa on the PS2, it's in my backlog) that I tried didn't appeal to me much though.

Most likely.  While it's not branded a FF title, there are a lot of common names of people and places in the background of FFT and FFXII that link it to VS.  Heck, one of the hunter ranks in FFXII is Riskbreaker.

Yup, I remember the "Riskbreaker" ranking, and I also know that the director of FFXII was the director of Vagrant Story. I really dug that game. Never suspected it was set in Ivalice, however!

Yeah, I'd forgotten about that as well.  Part 9 of the retrospective brought out some pretty interesting theories about the connections between all the Ivalice games.

I found part 9 to be pretty interesting. Never realized there were so many games set in Ivalice.  Part 10 is up too. It covers the movies and touches up several of the spin off games that came out mostly in Japan (and a few here like Secret of Mana).  There are 11 chocobo games that hit japan  icon_eek  Square really knows how to milk a franchise.

I need to watch these. The only FF game I really liked was FF3 on the SNES. I remember using the flying machine to go into the volcano to the dwarf lands.

Whoops! It was FF2 not FF3. ALl these years I thought it was FF3 on SNES. Doh...and FF2 SNES is actually FF4 in Japan. Geebus. Man that music really puts me back in circa 1993. Awesome.
