Odd to think that a backwards Nordic medieval fantasy province is more tolerant than much of the United States...

new preview from 1up:

Quote
At this point I decided: Why not see just how big Skyrim really is? Quests are all well and good, but the appeal of an Elder Scrolls game is its immensity, not its story. I trekked north and east toward the furthest extent of the kingdom (or whatever), the fortress city of Windhelm. An hour and a half later, I finally arrived.

Granted, I didn't make a perfect beeline across the land. There was this big mountain in the way that I needed to navigate around. And I kept spotting creatures and demi-humans roaming the land that seemed likely to ruin my day if I went charging up to them with my level one mage. The thieves' den yielded some pretty handy loot, like an enchanted robe that perked up my High Elf's already impressive innate magic capabilities by improving her mana regeneration and boosting the power of her destructive spells, but playing a straightforward magic-user didn't do many favors for Lady GAAAAHHH GAAAAHHH's defense. I had a pretty strong suspicion that if I went toe-to-toe with the giant clearly patrolling his home turf, I'd simply have been providing him with a light snack and a handy supply of tarsals to use as toothpicks for more substantial meals.

24 days!

[edit]  and 3 hours with Skyrim, including videos.

I hope the combat is better than Oblivion, that was a snooze fest for melee.  I've been soaking hours into Dark Souls, and I'm also worried that I'm going to be dissapointed with the combat in Skyrim.

This.

Dark Souls shows that you don't have to use lazy mechanics like scaling enemies when you have truly rock solid gameplay.

Skyrim now has a live action trailer?? http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/10/24/real-life-dragon-skyrim-live-action-trailer/#more-79096

Looks bloody good - the GF said it reminded her of Game of Thrones, and yeah, production values are through the roof on this one. I wonder if its less expensive than CGI ones?

I don't know, reading the Dark Souls thread on the console forums, sure seems like allot of "cheesing the fights" is going on during that rock solid gameplay.

I'm not sure that reading the forums gives much of the experience of actually playing DS.  I fully agree with the statement you quote.  Dark Souls rewards a player's natural urge to get better, both by improving their equipment, stats, etc., and by getting better at the rock-solid gameplay.  Scaling enemies removes that satisfaction almost completely.  I think I would have loved Oblivion thoroughly if it had better combat and if character development were a little more rational.

Its that the combat itself isn't as much based on stats and just pressing a button and standing toe to toe with an enemy, but more about skill. Enemies that are hard to put down in the beginning, will become trivial, once you learn their attack patterns, and how to utilize yourself (Based on armor weigth for instance) best in combat scenarios.

Simply put - it does not matter (much) if you have 10 or 100 in strength, its the skill of the player that determines outcome

There's also the enormous differences between even non-magical weapons. For example: A halberd attacks in a very different way than a spear, but if you swing the former in a tight corridor it's just going to bounce harmlessly off the wall.

So it is more an action game with RPG stats that have minimal impact than an RPG that has some action elements then?

I am likely in the minority, but I prefer to minimize player skill as much as possible in an RPG, and by player skill I mean things like manual dexterity with a mouse/controller, and twitch reflexes.  The main player skill I want involved in an RPG is decision making/figuring out puzzles etc...

I'd say a tactical combat rpg perhaps - otherwise it just sounds so dirty :-D Tactical in that its both of course action that determines combat, but certainly also tactics used to defeat enemies (Who to roll by and backstab, who use halberds on, what weapon type to use like Tilt mentioned) instead of just pure numbers.

But yeah, thats more or less it. The thing is - it feels more like "real" combat, than say for instance, an MMO, or games like Dragon Age, which are mostly pure numbers / decisionmaking games

I can only compare to Oblivion and Fallout 3, but Dark Souls is definitely more reliant on timing and good skill execution.  Some of the fights and enemies in DS require near perfect execution and quick thinking, while others allow for some mistakes, but will punish you.  I didn't die that often in Oblivion or Fallout 3, but I've died a ton in Dark Souls just learning a level, enemy, boss or I just plain screwed up.

I found the melee combat boring and clunky in Oblivion.  Dark Souls melee combat is magnitudes more sophisticated than Oblivion.  I didn't play melee in Fallout 3 so I can't compare any improvements they may have made.  I'm optimistic about Skyrim, and hope that they made the melee combat fun (with some depth).

Actually stats have a pretty big effect on the outcome of fights in DS -- how much damage you do, how fast you can roll, what armor you can wear, what weapons work best for you, how well you can take a hit (both in terms of damage and effects like staggering, etc.).  The stat system is fairly deep.  It's just that action is the medium through which the stats are significant.

Which is not that different from Oblivion.

Sure, but skill is ultimately what decides whether you win a fight or not - In Demons Souls at least. For instance, the big guy who always kills you the first 2000 times you try and its part of the story you die? He can be beaten once you've played the game enough.

Wait, it is part of the game that no matter what you do, you have to die 2000 times before you can win?  That sounds ridiculously frustrating and not fun.  I will be rather pleased then if Skyrim is nothing at all like Demon Souls/Dark Souls.
