Here's an interesting article about how as graphics approach photorealistic, our brains are less forgiving about their departures from reality, a problem coined "The Uncanny Valley."

Yeah, this has been covered a while ago, it's also why we're seeing a lot more stylized humans with good rendering on them, it's also why a lot more concept artists are being hired.
