Ok, I've put it off long enough. I'm picking up the HDTV and X-box 360 this morning. I must say I've developed a fair bit of trepidation after reading about all the X-box woes people are having.

I've put of console gaming for years, I hope my first foray into it has success.

Say a prayer to St. Peter before you leave and everything will be fine. Every morning when I wake up I say one and my launch 360 still works perfectly!

For the love of all things holy, get a warranty that allows you to get a new unit on the spot if yours goes bad.  Microsoft is replacing defective units with refurb units so you definitely don't want to get it through them.

Take this from a guy who has replaced 4 units hassle free since September.

I got the Viewsonic 37 inch...samsung surround sound.....Looks really nice. I don't have a digital camera or else I'd show it.
Nice deal at Cosco Canada...950cd. and 300cd. for the sound system.

I had to put off the X-box 360 purchase till today...So without further ado.........I'm off.....no, not like a rotten sack of potatoes....

So, I'll get Gears of War, Ghost Recon, RB-6, and probably a racing game......

Thanks for all the support you wankers... nod

Ok, got it home. Went to attach the blue, red, and green wire to the TV and noticed that the DVD-Sound system is using that slot. There is no other place to put these cables on the TV?

Do I need another cord?

might help if we could see the back of your tv, but most HD tv have several slots  to attach cables.

You should connect the 360 into the component (red, green, blue) inputs on your TV. You should connect your DVD player from your sound system via another input. (HDMI, SVideo, or RCA (yellow))

(Alternatively, it looks like your TV has a VGA input. You could buy the VGA cable for the 360. I would just switch the DVD player to another input though.)

You could get a component switch box and have them both in the same input.

Or you could use your 360 to watch DVDs.

Well, we came up with another way.............Although the thought of playing games on a 37inch surround sound TV was great...we're gonna just get a new 27inch HDTV for the bedroom...we needed a new one in there anyway.
I think in the long run its where I would prefer to go and play anyway.... icon_eek  umm, I mean games.... paranoid

So...off to Costco and get another Viewsonic(on sale)..the baby brother of the big one we just bought...

If you use SVideo or RCA that's true. But if your DVD outputs HDMI, that will be even better than component. Can you tell us which Samsung you bought? Looking at the cheaperst HTiaB on their site, the DVD player has an HDMI output.

Also, according to the viewsonic product comparison chart, the TV has the following sets of inputs:
2x S-video, 2x composite,
2x component
YPbPr/YcbCr,
3x HDMI, RGB,1x RF (TV)

So you _should_ have a second set of component inputs to hook your X-Box up to even if the DVD player is taking the other.

Wow, just Wow!!! Very blown away so far with the quality of the games I got...

But...........

When I try to sign in for X-box live..(I did the network check and everything is ok) after it tries for about 2 minutes or so I keep getting, "sorry account sign in is unavailable, try again later" message.

Is the sign-in down...or am I missing something?

I'm not sure what exactly your problems are with XBox Live since you said everything tests out fine.  Have you done any port forwarding?  For help, just find your router on the list at PortForward.com (they have most manufacturers and models) and they should have step-by-step instructions you can follow.

If you just want the port info they also have a list of common ports, including those needed for XBox Live (3074 TCP and UDP, 88 UDP).  They also have general info on what port forwarding is and such if you haven't done that before.

It is also worth checking on your router manufacturer's website to see if there is a firmware upgrade for your model, I know mine had an update from a couple years ago that supposedly helped XBox Live compatibility.

Not sure why, but I started over again this morning and it let me sign in.

But I don't know why I would at the moment..........WoW do I suck with console controls.. eek
Keep in mind this is my first console, and I haven't played aim and twitch shoot games in ages.

On casual in the training segment of GoW....I swear I heard the bugs laughing behind some concrete pillar while I tried to aim and shoot at them...bastages!!!!

But I'm having a ton O' fun...........great buy....Oh, I'm running the games on a 27inch HDTV in 1080i...is that ok? Or should I drop down to 720?

I haven't fired up Call of Duty 3 yet...I played CoD-2 on the PC and loved it....So I should take a break from Gears and load up some good Nazi-killing fun...

I can see the PC whimpering over in the corner while I play the X-box. Cry all you want....No more money for you!!! (soup Nazi voice)

doesn't really matter...go with the one you think looks best.  one little bit of advice though...in your case, 720p may be the better option as that is probably the native resolution of your tv.  by setting the 360 to 720p and sending that directly to your tv, you're avoiding any resolution scaling and should theoretically get a better quality image.  the difference between 720p and 1080i is usually not that obvious in any case though, so i'd just try each one out and see if you like one better than the other.

That's my concern as well, i can't imagine playing an FPS without a mouse and keyboard.

I love console gaming (it's where I started gaming after all) but I loathe playing an FPS with a gamepad. That is the main reason I don't own or particularly want a 360. Too many of its premium titles are shooters (like almost all of them).

Yeah, I can certainly see that X-box has its fair share of FPS type games.

Hey, I'm getting on in years, I hope some great game developer makes a few games with the twitch-challenged in mind.

I played Oblivion on the PC...I wonder if I'd enjoy it on this console?
