Guybrush returns in an episodic format, plus the original is being remade with a dance scene in LeChucks palace being added.

OK, I'm kidding about the dance scene, but I love it that Guybrush is coming back to us in an episodic format.  I think I'm going to pre-order the whole season this time around to show my support for the series and TellTale.  who's with me?

I like the fact that adventure games are making a popular comeback, but I always felt that 2D was way more charming for these games than 3D.
I liked the last Monkey Island, I liked Sam & Max, but I LOVED the old 2D versions. They just look more interesting, AND still look beautiful today. So why a remake? Just make a compatible version of the old game.

Of course, a game like street fighter 4 shows that you can make a 3D game which 'looks' almost 2D, so it's not a breaking point or anything.

The new version of Monkey Island 1 isn't a 3D game, from what I can see. It appears it's just had its original graphics replaced with ones that look more similar to what we've seen in newer Monkey Island titles. Of course, you can also switch between the original and the remade version at any point from what I've heard.

I've preordered Tales of Monkey Island already. The devs and Dominic Armato (the voice of Guybrush Threepwood) are spilling their guts over there.

Hey, you're right, they actually redid the 2D graphics! They did them pretty bad, but they did them smile
And hey, since you can choose for the old graphics, everybody's happy!

1990 version vs xbla version side by side

I like the 1990 one better. Graphics seem more my style and I dont care for the voice acting..I already have their voices in my head the way i think they should sound.

Quoting the IGN review's closing comment:

So episode 1 gets high notes for bringing us back into the Monkey Island universe, but at the same time, it looks like we'll have to wait for the rest of the episodes to roll out over the next four months or so to get all the answers.

He knocks the game for not having a "finale", and for having to wait to get the rest of the answers. No fucking shit, it's episodic content...

I enjoyed the demo.  They've definitely gotten the feel of the series right, even if the graphics are a little too goofy-looking for me.  I'm really glad they got Dominic Armato back to do the voice of Guybrush - it wouldn't have been the same with someone else.  Also, unless I missed it, they didn't mention that you could use the keyboard to move in the tutorial, and mouse movement is awful.

I think I'm near the end of the first episode now. It's pretty good, and also larger than I had expected. There's quite a bit to do on the island the episode takes place on, despite it looking somewhat barren at first. The puzzles range from very easy to somewhat hard.

The game has turned off my computer twice though. I don't know why.

Bah... You have to buy all the episodes as a package? What's the point, if I'm paying for the whole thing I WANT the whole thing. I'll be skipping this for 5 months until all the episodes are available.

someone has just told me that Tales of Monkey Island is not episode 5..

i presumed it went like this

The Secret of Monkey Island
Monkey Island 2:LeChuck's Revenge
The Curse of Monkey Island
Escape from Monkey Island
Tales of Monkey Island

now,yes i know that this latest one is Telltale games and not Lucasarts, but i still presumed it was number 5...someone even went onto mention that its actually episode 6!!!!!...can someone please clear this up for me

does this game actually acknowledge the past games?..or maybe is it a reboot?

Played a quick 10 minutes, they've done a really good job.  I love the start in the opening scenes which shows the original artwork - your heart sinks and then it cuts to the new artwork. Awesome, never played it before so this will be a treat

FYI: for Vista users experiencing problems with clicking dialog choices (for example, you click but nothing registers):

Browse to your Steam folder -> steamapps -> common -> the secret of monkey island special edition

Right click on MISE.exe -> Compatibility Tab -> check 'Disable Visual Themes'

This same bug affects the GFWL interface in Fallout 3 in Vista. Basically the cursor thinks it is offset slightly below where the screen actually shows it, making it difficult to click on interface items.

I have that bug in Windows 7. It can also be fixed by changing the resolution within the game.
