jeebus, it's been a decade already?  this game would be an awesome release for Steam or GOG.....

too bad they seem to have decided never to continue the series.  heck, I bet if they put a small team on it they could do a remake, updating it with a newer engine.

I doubt EA (which owns the IP afik) has ever said "never," even if Ken Levine may have said Irrational won't re-visit it.

Neither SS game was much of a blockbuster on the sales charts (a lot of Top 25 Best Games Ever have a higher place in gamers' hearts than they ever did on the sales charts), so I doubt it's high on their list of remakes at this point. If they can put a team on a followup to Syndicate [I'd rather have one to Syndicate Wars], then nothing is off the table as far as old properties go. I mean if they want to remake 16-year old games that aren't going to trigger much recognition in the 20 something set, they might as well remake 10-year old games too.  icon_smile

I loved SS2 (I bought SS1 belatedly but found it confusing and confounding), but I just wish I had been able to finish it. I got stuck about 3/4 into the game and never could finish it. I seem to recall the "maze" layout of the ship became very confusing to me and even the official strategy guide couldn't figure out a way to make the layout understandable.

Listening to the audio recordings in the Batman Arkham Asylum demo gave me just the tiniest bit of System Shock 2 flashback.  icon_cool

L…L…LOOK AT YOU….H…HA…HACKER… A pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?

Good memories.

Great stuff that. I have a bunch of those as .wav files somewhere, used to use them as Windows sounds for various actions.  nod

I thought that Dead Space started out as System Shock 3 before they went in a different direction. Is this not the case?

I don't recall ever hearing that. Are you thinking perhaps of BioShock?

Nope, it's true.  Way way back the foundations were laid for System Shock 3, but that work instead went into Dead Space.  I think it was more a case of System Shock 3 being canned internally, but them wanting to still use the engine and concepts.

I can still hear the progressive modulation of people's voices as they get more and more transformed by The Many. I also shudder when I think of what Diego does as a result, when he comes to his senses.

SHODAN was the best villain, IMHO, and the Guardian from Ultima VII is a close second. I guess I love baddies that taunt you ingame.

I have to agree with Yahtzee though, Bioshock was just SS2, under water, if SHODAN had read Ayn Rand.

In some ways, that's a good thing.  System Shock 2 didn't sell all that well, not for what it was expected to be.  That's partly why there hasn't been an SS2 yet.

So, we've got a generation here that got to experience SS2 by proxy, and will be more receptive to future games that are like it.

I can believe it's been 10 years, I remember it being 1 of the games that show cased my new Voodoo5 and SB Live cards. slywink I remember being blown away by the sound - although game sound has improved significantly since it's release, I don't think any other game has impressed me as much.
As to a sequel, I was under the impression that Bioshock was more or less a sequel.

From what I recall, they always said it was a "spiritual" sequel / successor, which I guess falls in the "more or less" category.  icon_wink

i really wish they would do a proper sequel and make the hacking more like it was in the first one.  now it's more like a mini game everywhere.  hell, get the Introversion folks to lend a hand and get an interface like uplink.  they could go 3rd person like dead space, but i really liked fighting the robots in the first one.

Loved them both. give both a solid 10. liked the first one a bit more though. It is still tied with Master of Orion as my all time favorite game ever. And yes it was confusing to get around on that place. It didn't help that I had the non enhanced version with the awfully pixelated graphics smile I think half way through the game I got them upgraded.

I still look up the sounds to that game every now and then. There is nothing to compare to this game.

Now with Thief getting a nr 4 in the sequence and a deus ex 3, I wonder if a game like System Shock will ever get a true sequel? I'd love it, although I'm sure I'd complain a lot when I see its not the exact same game during development :-D

I never could finish SS2. I certainly grew to love it. I just remember there was some point where the map you work with became very vague, and I lost my way in the corridors and wasn't able to reach the ending.

Metro 2033 at times reminds me of SS2 a bit, particularly in terms of never having enough ammo for my firearms.  icon_razz

Don't worry about the end of SS2. It pulled a Half Life and went to The Many land.

Ugh, some of those audio logs still echo through my mind. Nasty nasty stuff. Of course, I've played SS2 from start to finish about 6 times, so I should have memorized it by now!
