Did anyone else get in the beta from Fileplanet?

My first impressions are very good so far. I am having a blast playing. Everyone moves pretty slow so it does get tactical. Lots of fun though and graphics are good.

I really wanted to download this, but they played with my nerves with their sign in account thing...too much hassle for a beta for me, sorry. Eighter they want to betatest their stuff, or they don't want. They seem not to.

Did they keep the AI element leaders from Swat 3 TGOY?

Looks very good indeed, but since the game is being developed by Irrational Games (same people who made Tribes Veageance) I'm a little skeptical, in particular about having a decent offline experience. (In terms of AI and bots. Tribes shipped without bots because it was the community's job to make bots, not the people who were paid to make the game. According to Irrational Games' irrational belief, anyway.)

At least we have a GG/CG here to beta test the game and set them straight!

Let me claify something. The beta test from fileplanet is not a "real" beta test. It is more of a beta level demo.

There is no single player.
There is only multiplayer with one map and I "think" only one game play type. I say think because I did see other game types in the game list, but when I tried to make my own game it only gave me one type.

The type of game present is called VIP rescue.
You have 2 teams. SWAT and Suspect.
One person on the SWAT team is randomly chosen to be the VIP. The VIP starts with a pistol, a door wedge, and some CS grenades. The mission goals are these:
SWAT: Escort VIP to rooftop helicopter pad.
Suspect: Kidnap VIP from SWAT. Hold him for 2 minutes, then kill him.

Some weapons/equipment
PRIMARY
MP5
MP5 Suppressed
M4
Pepperball Gun-Paintball gun that shoots CS balls
2-3 Shotguns

SECONDARY
2 Pistols
Taser-This is useful for taking down the VIP. Stun him, then while he is stunned, cuff him.

PROTECTION
Choose Helmet or Gasmask
Choose Light or Heavy Armor

MISC- You have 6 slots
CS Grenade
Flashbang
Stinger grenade explodes into rubber balls or something
Optiwand
Door wedge-Use this to "lock" a door. Prevents doors from opening. Can be removed with the tool that every comes with.

I have played a bunch of games. Unfortunately the majority goes one of 3 ways so far.
1) Firefight: SWAT acciddently kills VIP
2) Firefight: Suspects acciddently kill VIP before kidnapping him
3) Games turns into a TK frenzy

I have only been in one game so far where people worked as a team and got the VIP out or captured properly.

The game looks really good though. I did have a major crash problem though. EVERY time I exit the game, my system reboots. Very annoying.

I'll try to post some screenshots later. No NDA.[/list]

It's now in open beta. you still have to sign up for a free fileplanet account though.

I've been subscribed for over 2 years now. The only benifits I use are

1) Priority downloads. I don't have to wait in the que to get stuff
2) Early releases and exclusive beta/demos. Such as SWAT. Most of the stuff that is early/exclusive, does usually become available to the free account holders as well, usually 1-2 weeks.

Great game ill be picking it up on day one.

Beta is the new most overuse buz word.  Take this game for instance its not a beta in any form.  There is no tester feed back.  there are no regular improvments to the game resulting from the continued dev cycle.  Even worse they advertise to us at the end of the game by taking over our computer for 10 seconds so we can read thier damn adds.   The object of a beta is to get formal feedback from the testers and fix the game a little at a time.  The object of this software and most others with the name beta attached is to sell you some software.   The only real reason to use the term beta in this instance is to stop people for nailing you over bugs in the game.  All they have to say is, its a beta.

I hope Irrational Games does a better job with SWAT 4 than they did with Tribes Veangeance. I don't like how they pick up another developer's games and make it their own and then leave out important features. (Like no bots in Tribes Veangeance. Their "it's up to the community to release a bot" comment is what lost my respect for them. Since when is it the paying customer's job aka "the community" to code a bot for them? at least valve had the guts to hire a third party - turtle rock - to make a bot for counter-strike)

I'm not suprised at all that they are concentrating on multiplayer either.
What are the chances that they include "bots" (like Swat 3 Tactical game of the year) in multiplayer? Or AI element leaders?
I was one of the people who suggested AI element leaders on the old official Swat 3 forums.
The developers listened. Now you can play SWAT 3 TGOY with any combination of human/AI players and you don't HAVE to be element leader. A good AI is one that can think on it's own and not have to rely on a human player to issue it orders and tell it what to do, where to go, if he should deploy gas before going in, etc. that is just too much of a headache for me.

I guess I shoudn't assume too much about Swat 4, but from what I've read so far, their AI seems to concentrate on the human player babysitting his team of little girls because without the human player in charge, there is no AI.

Ok, well I played several hours of this over the last few days, and this is waht I think:

The game rocks. It has very high potential, with a few glaring flaws so far in the one multiplayer mode and map released.

THe graphics are good, the controls tight, the tactical element and teamplay aspects solid, and the multiplayer so far is fun.

I think the VIP multiplayer mode is poorly designed because of a few annoying victory conditions, and I also think there is a MASSIVE problem with TKing on the shitty random servers out there-there definately needs to be a vote function as well to get rid of people and things of that nature.

What else...it seems very solid, and I would be suprised if the engine doesnt translate into a good single player experience as well, as long as the story elements are solid and they have a decent variety of mission types.

The only other issue i had was the paucity of available weapons. I would have liked some more options-but perhaps that doesnt fit with the theme of the game.

HOpefully, we can get a CG game going one night.

I saw an interview with a dev recently, on gamespy i think.  anyway that dev said there was not story to this game.  It was simply a series of missions.  Thats not to say that each mish does not have its own story, but the missions them selves are not connected in anyway.  They said the missions of a real swat cop are never related so an overarching story did not make sence for the game.

I just read a newspost that a single player demo will be out in early March-that is great, because I would definately have to be sold on that before I buy the game with Republic Commando, Project Snowlbind, and Brothers In Arms coming out at the same time!!!
