SW Force Unleashed(PS3/360) reviews are starting to trickle in

Looks like EGM wasn't too happy with Force Unleashed. They gave it a C, C, and B-.

Negatives:

Powers are gimped by enemies having Force power negating defenses
Sloppy Combat Mechanics
Unresponsive controls
Clunky Camera Controls
PS3 has sound issues and both titles have Clipping Issues

Not much on the positives
Force Powers are cool when you can use them
Attractive game
Story is acceptably good


As well, Penny Arcade doesn't seem to thrilled with it.

I was really interested in the game until the demo hit, I hate the idea that the regular enemies take 4 or 5 lightsaber swings to kill. Then add on to the fact that they have enemies that can negate your force powers and it seems more tedious than what I expected. I really expected the ability to become a total badass and rule the roost and to have to fight inventive and creative enemies, not storm troopers and rebels who auto-magically created force negating shields that have never existed in Star Wars before.

I wonder if the Wii version has the same issues in gameplay. No reviews on that one yet.

It just wasn't ... fun.

Play the demo a couple of times and you get all the highs and none of the lows of the full game. Sort of like the demo for Ninja Gaiden II. I want to violently slaughter ninjas in five minute intervals. Fire up the demo = problem solved.

So you're saying it's probably good, then? 

When I first played it I was mostly disappointed.  But after playing the demo a few times it became apparent that it was they type of game that wasn't a button mash and required learning the controls.  Once I did so the demo became immensely entertaining to replay figuring out new ways to deal with each encounter.  Certainly, the full game might not be perfect, but I also discount Star Wars reviews these days due to the popularity of bashing the property (not undeserved in some cases, but still not outside the tar-and-feather mentality).

Yes, my avatar naturally suggests that I'm a Lucas apologist...but I also think the prequels were crap.

I'm hoping so.  I'll know any embargo info when I get the code.

yeah, just another disappointment of the year. there's more disappointments this year than GOTY candidates. what a crappy season this turned out to be. i figured the game was going to blow when they announced no MP and no PC version. 2 strikes and you're out for me!

Most games are embargoed to some degree.  In a few cases however, the publisher is willing to lift the embargoes if the score is sufficiently high enough (Assassin's Creed is one example of that- Ubi would only let reviews be posted early if they were above a 9 or something like that).  

I would say,  however, that embargoes that expire the day of release intead of a few days before are a potential warning sign.

Asctually, with a lightsaber, I feel like a controller is a better fit.  The mouse doesn't move in the right way.  Granted I'd love to see a stick lightsaber (or, of course, a 1:1 wiimote saber) versus buttons, but the mouse always felt odd to me.

One of the legit reasons for embargos are if there is a problem that requires patching that they don`t have 1000 reviews out there bashing them for something they fixed.

That may just be an excuse though, but it would make sense to me.

But if reviewers already have their copies they will probably have the review written and ready to go before that patch even hits.

Embargoes are good for folks who can't afford to fly somebody out to XYZ office to play the game for review on-site.  It lets sites like this one 'catch up'.  Rock Band 2, as an example, has an embargo for the 15th.

well, cancelled my pre-order yesterday.  If impressions are decn't I'll probably still pick it up, but between STALKER, Witcher Enhanced and Warhammer On-line (traded Mercs 2 yesterday) the rest of the month is pretty full for me gamewise until Silent Hill Homecoming comes out.
