holy cow that's a big robot.  since I've rediscovered my love of RTS's with Universe at War I'm really looking forward to this one.  now, I didn't play the first game, but did they have giant robots like that in it?  and if they did, did they have hard point options like the Hierarchy in UaW?

For some reason that vid wouldn't play properly for me, but yes, the first game had big stompy robots.  In fact your first unit, the commander, was a big stompy robot.  And he did indeed have hardpoints; two arms and a torso, on which you could place various upgrades as you researched them.

The commanders weren't particularly large compared to other units however, but you can build tech-3 superunits like a huge mechanical spider and massive gunships and such.

Eh, depends on what you think of production values are.  I think their technical execution of games has always been pretty good, but their ability to craft a story and make interesting gameplay has always been lacking.  Save for Demigod's multiplayer troubles, they've all been technically good games.

But, it seems like they're only good at copying older work and not really improving that much on it.  Hopefully they actually learned something with SC2.

Yeah, personally I've always thought the term "production values" to mean more the presentation - sound, graphics and whatnot.  From what I've seen, Demigod certainly looks and sounds a lot better than Supreme Commander.

some new screenies.  I have the first game and expansion from D2D's sale but haven't had a chance to play it yet.

10 minute gameplay video too.

They didn't show anything about the resource system and how they intend to simplify it.  SC1 was brought down by it's two conflicting focuses, extreme micro management of the economy and unit building clashing against macro level strategic control where 1 unit or 1 resource extractor meant nothing.

Early on they mentioned streamlining it, but until I see how they've done that, I'm not going to bother buying this.

This is going to be released at the same time as Command and Conquer 4 I believe.  Wouldn't you laugh your ass off if Starcraft 2 STILL wasn't even in beta by then!  I'm beginning to believe Blizzard really isn't as big a company as they propose.  I think the company is really just 3 people working out of their garage.

At any rate, I'll get SupCom 2.  I liked SupCom 1 plenty.  Thanks for that video link CK.

Yeah.  As far as I'm concerned they don't need to do much with SupCom 2.  I thought the first game was pretty good and I'll be happy with some new units and a graphical upgrade really.  Not necessarily a day one buy, but certainly a must-buy.

It looks like the demo is up on the steam store now but I can't get the demo added to my games list no matter what. Clicking the demo link always just refreshes the supcom2 game page.

For fuck's sake!  SupCom2 requires Steamworks.  Yeah yeah, I know that most people have no problem with Steam, best thing since sliced bread, blah blah blah.  But some of us don't want Steam and refuse to install it.  I'm getting seriously pissed off with companies requiring you to install third-party applications to "enhance" the game.

I don't want Steam, I don't give a shit about achievements, just leave me the hell alone to play the game the way I like.  Is that too much to ask?

Out.  No sale.

Time to get over it man.

Oh and Nolan North is the main character in this one.  Good grief, that's another character to add to the Northies awards.  Thankfully, he's playing a rather different character type, so he's not replaying Nathan Drake this time.

That said, it's Supreme Commander with some streamlining.  Not sure if SupCom1 fans will like it, but the same feel is there for better or worse.

Some notable improvements or just changes:
Scale is smaller the SupCom1, you can still zoom out to strategic view, but the maps are much smaller and manageable, which also means smaller cluster of basic units matter.

This is also a good thing since there are no longer 3 tiers of factory (or was that 2 tiers?) in SupCom2.  You just get your units you can build there, and research upgrades to those units.  There's a lot of research options, they do make a difference.

It still suffers from the same scale problem as SupCom1, or rather the game good scale from the first if you liked it.  There's still some micromanagement that's difficult to do as you

When you build anything, it immediately deducts the cost of the unit or structure from your reserves.  It's a good idea to lesson the micromanagement of economy, but doesn't quite work as well when the game is still based around building single units from multiple factories.  You might find yourself using the feature to Repeat the build queue a bit less.

To be honest, my biggest problem with the game is their choice of design.  They really should have had factories produce units in packs to better fit the scale of the game.

What I do have to congratulate them on is making a really outstanding demo.  From this demo I got a very, very good idea of what this game is like, and solidifies that I will eventually buy it due to the improvements (to me) over the first game.  They give a full tutorial (that's a bit slow though) and two missions.  The first mission is an old style build up and destroy, but you have what's basically your early game unit limitations.  Then in the second mission it gets interesting with the addition of a DOTA style element where you have these bases that produce dumb experimentals that march toward the enemy base.

Edit: UGH now I'm not so sure...I restarted the demo after typing this reply and now my view is just spinning around my commander and I cant stop it..wth.

Still spinning. I cant find anything about it on the steam forums or anywhere else. Though I did see someone say their camera view was spinning on it's own in another game and it was their Saitek keyboard. My keyboard is the saitek eclipse...hmmm.

I have a 2nd monitor and now can play Supreme Commander 2 in duel screen mode.  Is there a way I can pan/scroll to the left without my cursor going over to my 2nd monitor?  I can only scroll Right, Up and Down but not left.  I can use the keyboard and do it, but it doesn't feel right.

to each their own, but Steams matchmaking is really good nowadays, the friends list makes getting games together easier and the autoupdate makes patching painless.  it deosn't even seem to eat up memory anymore.

there's surprisingly little about SC2 troubleshooting in forums right now.  as far as I can tell Steam doesn't even have an official forum for it up yet.

So I just decided to fire up the demo.

I can't select the correct resolution for my main monitor because the list is too long and isn't scrollable.

have you tried picking a higher resolution than the default one, and then seeing if it shows more of the list?

First thing I did. Doesn't help. I tried maximizing it in windowed mode and I still can't get higher than 1600x900.

Eh, make that 1680x1050(59). The problem is the damn game lists four separate refresh rate options for every available resolution.

Been to that folder too. It's empty. No, the files aren't hidden. They aren't there. The file size on disk is 0 bytes. Doing a file serch for game.prefs brings up files for both Demigod and Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, but not the Supreme Commander 2 demo.

Appreciate the effort though frown

Really appreciate that Ceekay. Just tried it, and it's like the game isn't even bothering to read the file. It's gotta be storing the information somewhere else, because it remembers the settings I choose, they just aren't in that damn folder.

I gave up and played in windowed mode.

I like the changes they've made to the gameplay. It's a little easier to figure out what's what and get going than Supcom was.

And am I wrong or do you no longer upgrade your factories, but just research new units to build at them? That seemed to be the way it was working, which I much prefer to the Supcom way.

I know in the tutorial there was a thing about upgrading them with shields and missile batteries, I believe they were a tab on the factories build list.

Yeah, I did those, but that's different. It doesn't seem like you have three separate tiers of units anymore. Just one set that you upgrade as the game progresses.

I thought the whole tiers of factories was tedious and annoying anyway so I'm glad they're gone.

However, I'm not sure about the whole research system though.

100% agreed. The new research system seems like a good idea, but it is far more limited than the old games. I really feel like we are getting 1/3 the units, smaller maps, and less of an epic feel. The demo had the bad guy be some effete Cybran guy who literally said "Toodles" as he left. Maybe there is a storyline reason for this, but it is hard not for me to roll my eyes and say "Duh-ummmbed Duh-owwwn."
