What's the deal with this game? Is it good, rare or both?
My local EB had a mint used copy and I might pick it up.

OK - Now that you've convinced me to pick it up - Who wants to buy it off me when I'm done?
Is it THAT good? Will it turn me into an RPG guy?

It's a very good RPG. Not the second coming, of course, but still a very worthwhile game, and the best of the Suikoden series, IMHO.
The reason it's selling so high is because of its pathetically limited printing, which has plagued all of the Suikoden games (though they did Re-release Suikoden 3, hence why you're still able to buy it). The game sold quick, and now you need to be really damn lucky to find a copy for a 'decent' price.

Thanks for the help guys!
I did pick it up.
I'll report back and will sell/trade it when I'm done/fed up with it!
Feel free to lend me some advice seeing as that I'm not very RPG literate!
Any do's and don'ts that I should know right off the bat?

Played for about 10 minutes. Got both bored and lost. Looks like it was an investment...

First rule of RPGs:
DO play for more than 10 minutes. They almost always start out slow, especially since you're mostly killing rats or flowers or butterflies or something like that.

 Seriously. Almost every great RPG had me totally like..."uh, no" for 10 minutes. FFX, FFIX, FVIII, Chrono Cross, etc. Console RPG's often start with that wtf feeling.
OF course, I have never played SII, and I hated SIII (most overrated PS2 rpg, well, ever, IMO).

Do yourself a favor and get a FAQ here. There is all sorts of stuff you might miss at the beging of the game which make it more fun. Why get fustrated? It should be enjoyed. Us the FAQ and if eventually the game really hooks you enough that you don't want to use it stop then.

I'm in agreement. If the game starts to become frustrating to the point of just not wanting to bother, grab the FAQ and do some reading. The purpose of gaming is to be (challenging yet) enjoyable, and if the opposite is true, there's no point in trying to grit through it just because. Having said all that, if you're inexperienced with RPGs to begin with, and really want to "get into the fold", Suikoden 2 might not be the best first title to try out the waters, so to speak.

Thanks guys - Yeah, I know I'm a baby when it comes to RPGs and this one isn't probably the way to start. I'll look over the FAQs and get back to it eventually. On a similar topic - What would you guys recommend as a nice little starter turn-based RPG? The less random battles, the better!

On a similar topic - What would you guys recommend as a nice little starter turn-based RPG? The less random battles, the better! What system? The PS2 - Final Fantasy 10 is a good start. It does have random battles and they are too frequent but it is pretty easy really and all the text is voiced over so not a lot of reading. Plus it is cheap now.

You might check to see if you can find the first Suikoden. It's fairly short and when you've finished you can import your saved game into Suikoden II for some extras. The random encounter rate isn't too hateful.
I like the Wild Arms series. The first is a fun little game but has far too many random encounters at some points. However, you can get a spell (invisibility, I think) to avoid them. Wild Arms 3 allows you to avoid random encounters to a point, and I think I've heard that Wild Arms 2 does as well.
Xenosaga is a fun game, and you can see the enemies on the screen. You may not always be able to avoid them, but you can see them.
