More details on this story from Wired. Starting in April all you Mac snobs can start throwing money down the ever hungry Steam pit.

Bringing Steam to Mac will give gamers several cross-platform benefits, Newell said.

    * If players already own the PC versions of Valve games, they’ll get Mac versions at no extra charge through a feature called Steam Play.
    * By using the Steam Cloud feature that the company introduced in 2008, players can save in-progress games online, then call up those saved games no matter which version they’re playing. If you’re playing Half-Life 2 on your home PC but then head out on the road with your MacBook, you can continue your game-in-progress.

that's actually really neat, especially when it comes to the major studio titles - Mac games go down in price even slower than console games. sometimes they never do.

Indeed. I have a Mac and already have Steam on it; it's just that I have to reboot my damn computer any time I want to play a PC game.

Speaking of which, despite having to reboot and use boot camp, how does playing PC games on Macs work for you guys?

I suspect you'll see more mac ports now that the switch to intel based chips complete.  One of the big reasons why many games didn't make it to the mac is that most of the middleware that developers use couldn't run on those powerPC processors.

I have a regular Macbook (not Pro) and my computer doesn't have a graphics card. So normally stick to older games that aren't graphic intensive (at least relatively to modern games). Torchlight worked fine, though. My brother has a Macbook Pro and he plays current games without any problems. Just make sure to use a real mouse and not the track pad.

installed Steam on my work iMac - only games available out of my library right now are Braid and Portal. I expect that more games will be transferred over in the coming months...

I am curious if they will go back and add some of the older games. For example, there was a Mac port of Deus Ex. Probably unlikely because Mac ports are usually done by a different developer (Aspyr in a lot of cases), but it would be cool if they managed it.

I hope it will also have a positive effect on Mac game prices. Mac games rarely go on sale like their PC counterparts. For example, KOTOR for Mac is still $30 to download, and I think it's $10 for PC.

I'm a new convert to the cult of mac. I just got a Macbook pro last week and love it. I was really thrilled to see that Steam was out on the mac. The bigger surprise was that I had access to Torchlight since I already purchased the PC version. very cool.

My mac is my main writing machine but it is pretty damn cool that it can play Portal so well. I don't know what kind of video card is in the machine but it should be able to handle half-life 2 if they put that out.

HL2 is coming

So, I downloaded HL2. It didn't have my PC saves, the game stuttered and the mouse didn't work (I could strafe left and right and go forward using the keyboard), but otherwise it's great

I'll have to boot back into Windows and see if that fixes the game save issue. I know they are doing a lot of patching on the game so I expect that it will get better. I probably also should have shut down some of the other programs I was running.

Apparently this was a large update for HL2 on both platforms - it now runs on the newest Source engine and they added in all of the XBOX achievements, among other things.
