really, once you get past the first boss, you are let off the leash, and while you can repeat the pattern and upgrade again, the game would benefit a lot from telling you this.

Actually you're let off the leash before that. It just doesn't tell you. At all.

It's implied that you can't go anywhere without beating the first boss but...you can explore all of Alpha Sector to your heart's content before that point.

oh, yes, definitely true in the tutorial mode going away.  I meant it more from the quest direction side of it.  that's the last thing the game tasks you to do, at least until they get past the early beta phase.

hmm... only one more character wipe

well, whenever that happens I shall get the game.  Unless, by some Xmas miracle, it goes on sale during a Holiday sale.

I've been watching this guy play 'Starbound' all week.. and he's been building this awesome big castle up on a tree the entire time. Take a look!

So they finally had a really big update after having been pretty quiet for 9 months or something.

Since the game was on sale I decided to take a chance on it.  Anybody still playing this, or also just pick it up in the sale?

I never played the earlier versions but this looks like Terraria mixed with being able to explore and find new worlds, which I dig in concept.  I'm hoping to get some time with it this weekend.

I have restarted after the update, looking good so far. Only played 30 minutes so far but liking it alot. I played loads of Terraria and while similar I like the futuristic style.

Just started today.  I'm actually not really big into the crafting aspect of these games, so they all tend to be a bit of a tough sell for me.  I love the ideas though.  Survival part is fun to me.

I played for a few hours yesterday and other than having a ship this felt almost exactly like Terraria.  Maybe once I can find the core samples and repair my ship it will get better, but as of now I'm pretty disappointed to just be playing the same thing as before.

I guess it's a nice improvement to just use the same tool for digging all the time and not run out of picks and whatever, but I'm still just mining coal and chopping down trees to I can place torches everywhere in mines and go down further to get more ores.  Super futuristic.

I don't even really find a purpose in most of the crafting.  I built a set of armor but I started with a purple sword that is better than anything I can craft.  I couldn't give a crap about building cosmetic junk like a table and chairs.

I thought this was supposed to be more about exploring worlds, but it's just the same mining game.  It's not bad, but I already burned out on doing that in Terraria long ago.

The big gimmick with this one is traveling to other worlds and seeing unique randomly generated environments and creatures, so if you haven't left your starter planet yet it's going to seem pretty ordinary.

Not only that, but once you start doing missions for the base and have access to other planets in your starting system.

Well if that stuff is really cool maybe I'll keep going.  But in my opinion, if it takes an average player several hours to get to the actual new and unique part of your game, then you've probably done something wrong.

The big difference is that Starbound is sci-fi based and Terraria is fantasy. And the mobile base that you have (as it grows, you can do some crazy things to it). And the races (each with their own ship designs and crafted items).

Yeah, the two games 'look' the same on the surface, but they're quite different as you play. Also, I've put in more hours into Starbound than Terraria for whatever reason.

Well worth it IMHO if you at all like the 'mining and crafting' aspect and such. Although it's ton more fun with friends.
