Yup that was a Pierson's Puppeteer, one of which was the Hindmost from Ringworld Engineers. I figure any game that lets me create a two-headed, three-legged, coward whose heads are actually it's hands has got to be a great game!
Yeah for Purple Tentacle! That is a blast from the past!
I can't wait until I get the full version though - if the demo, which has like 1/3 of the parts, can create so many things, I can't imagine what the full thing will create.
To answer about Direct2Drive, it has its ups and downs, like any DD service. But it is pretty good. It uses the Fileplanet Download system, which has always been pretty solid for me. Sometimes the encryption that they use can be problematic (it screwed up Sword of the Stars) but this is rare. This happens in Steam as well, they still haven't gotten a fix for Steam's broken Roller Coaster Tycoon Platinum. I would say, if you are comfortable with Steam, Gamersgate and Stardock, then D2D is going to be fine. Stardock is the best, of course, but most of those other embed some form of initialization copy protection.
And EA is not going to cancel anything. They are not held liable for user created content. If those people upload creatures like that to the Sporepedia, they will run the risk of getting their Spore account banned or suspended - something which will take away a LARGE part of the fun (as you can DL cool creatures on the Sporepedia to appear in your own game). This penis stuff will blow over (yuck, that sounded sick) once the immaturity level gets boring and their gets to be a real threat of ruining your game.

I'm not feelin' the love for this at all! So you can create some goofy looking cartoon creatures that look like cartoons? Okay, children, five minutes more of coloring and then you can have some juice. You like juice, don't you? Seriously, if these creatures have some specific capabilities gamewise; like this one's superfast, this one can eat anything, that one has two hearts, this one can fly, that one's reflexes are topnotch: then I can see that there may be some strategy in designing a creature whose descendants may be superb spacefighter jockeys or clever artists or skilled traders or whatever. However, what I'm seeing so far is some silly looking animated messes. Don't get me wrong: I am not angry about it or disgusted. Amused. Bemused. Is this a game for the young at heart then? Are you all going to take naps afterwards?

That's exactly what it is. The creatures gain abilities according to how you build them, and you can see the abilities get added as you work. For example, add a pair of horns, and the creature will gain the charge ability. Add more horns (or something else that grants the same ability) and the Charge ability will level up. Add eyes to the creature, and it will gain the eyesight ability. Add hands, and it will be able to pick things up. Add wings, and it can fly for a limited time. You get the picture.

I predict great things for this title. I need to get in there and see about creating some sort of dragon creature...you know, with a beefy arm and some wing-a-lings.

Yeah Mr. Strange, all the goofy looking parts actually have gameplay impact. You can charm with pretty pieces, strike with claws, glide with wings, or charge with horns. My waspy looking thing about has a 3 (out of 5) glide, a nice charge, and a "spit" skill to launch DoT venom. Not the most peaceful of creatures. Partly this is because all of the demo peices tend toward the war-like. And hey, Black and White was good for a laugh (did I turn British or something). It was revolutionary when it came out, it just also happened to be the one game that you really LOVED the first two days you played it, then promptly forgot about it. I call it the Lands of Lore II syndrome. It was the most fun you had for a brief time, but no one I know actually finished it. But Spore is no B&W. The gameplay of B&W was mostly the same, over and over, level to level. In this, you have different goals, different life stages, and different tech levels. And tell me, can anyone really forget the Black & White [urlhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88UsdYDsnVw]Sailor's Song[/url]?

The more I play with the Creature Creator the sadder I get. I am in awe of my creatures and I want to play with them but I have to wait until September to bring them truly to life. So sad.
Will was right about player "ownership" being more powerful than any story a game designer creates. I want to play with my critters!
Sigh.

Found it, but it doesn't look like it saved my three creations I have a couple pics though. and some animated Weird how they flash, not sure what's wrong with that. Anyway, the blue one is my 'anatomically correct' one, though it has parts of both genders. I was feeling bored so I went ahead and did the juvenile thing I'm sure millions will do on release. His breasts and penis are actually spitter and when you use the spit attack he shoots from all three. It's amazing at 4am how funny that is to watch Looking forward to having all the parts available, I really like the Hyder though, wish I didn't have to redo it when the game comes out.

I'm blown away by some of the creations I've seen in the Penny Arcade thread. They've completely sold me on the game. Well, the creature creator at least. I'll have to cut and paste some of the better ones here later today.
This is like the Forza 2 livery editor all over again.

I completely agree. Some of these guys (and you guys for that matter) are amazing. My creatures look like total crap compared to what some people are creating.
Last night I watched some YouTube vids on the game itself. Holy Cow! I just can't wait to get my hands on the full game.

OK, I will officially concede that this shit is cool. There's variety even in the demo and it's really easy to use. In only about twenty minutes I created the creature attached to this post (and in the category of "hey, they thought of everything", when you take a picture of your creature, it automatically saves both a large .png and a smaller web-ready .jpg). It bites, it strikes, it spits and if you get near the tail it will knock you upside the head.
The game, of course, could still be total crap but playing with the creatures is damn fun.
I can't believe I'm actually considering paying for a demo...

I'm dl'ing the demo from Gamershell.com now. Is that $9.99 version better? I haven't looked at any stores so I don't know. Does it have a coupon?
I'm skeptical, but who am I kidding? I believe that this is going to be game that I, as a gamerati, must try regardless.

From what I've heard the $10 version has more (all?) parts. I could've sworn I heard it comes with a $5 coupon for the game but I'm not certain.

Here's what I'm wondering. The Sporepedia has downloads as jpegs. Does that mean when you download one of those jpegs, that the game literally recreates it? What happens if you put something in there that wasn't originally created with the creator? Or do the jpegs contain the data needed for the creatures?

The downloads are actually PNG, not JPG. All the creature data has been rather cleverly encoded into the PNG itself, so yes, the Creature Creator will be able to replicate any creature by just seeing its thumbnail picture. Here, give it a try with a couple of my creatures: PS: The first one of these requires the full version of the Creature Creator.

When I start up the creature creator and try to load the ones I made already, it shows that I have 5 creatures in the left tab, but there aren't any displayed. It seems everytime I shut down and restart the program it loses my creatures but remembers how many more I made. I also don't seem to be able to add the png's to the game by dragging and dropping as shown.
