So...enlighten me (after looking at all the shots) - what is this? It sure looks damn impressive.

Actually, I'll just answer myself via an edit:

Quote
What is Space Force - Rogue Universe?

An open ended, beautiful and innovative 3D space environment decorated with stars, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, black holes, star bases, floating cities and open for exploration, trade, crafting, diplomacy, fight. An in-depth storyline and plenty of opportunities which will inspire the action oriented player but also the real adventurer and the trader. Space Force - Rogue Universe offers small-scale as well as huge space battles, a vast range of numerous different quests, and a story-filled game.

I've been hankering to fire up X3: Reunion, but since this is a new PC I'm not looking forward to introducing Starforce onto it, so maybe this will be a good replacement.

It's available on Steam but I'm not sure if that version has Starforce.  Since there's no discs involved I'd hope not.  However, I believe the Game of the Year edition doesn't have it, since with patch 2.0 the need to SF was removed (unfortunately I have the original discs from when it came out).

I avoid Starforce by installing a game with it but grabbing the crack for it before I run it. That way SF wont be installed.

I'm looking forward to this one as well.  As long as they emphasize the "exploration" component.  I want to be able to explore those planets, stars, black holes, comets, moons, asteroids and star bases.  I want to be able to discover things.  I'm hoping that they really are serious about the exploration portion of the game (like the original Starflight was).

Ha i was thinking Starflight as I read your post. Man Thats my favorite Genesis game. I loved discovering other civs and finding dead colonies on worlds. The only thing it lacked was derelict ships floating in space. Wish someone would combine Star Control 2 and Starflight. I even miss sending out my rover and mining minerials for money. That was one of my favorite activities in SC2.

I saw that mentioned on the official forums in a stickied thread about version 2.0.  It's cool that they posted that in their forums to save the people who bought the original version the trouble of dealing with Starforce.

I try to use a joystick as it makes them the most fun.  Sadly, I have had to use a keyboard and mouse for Starshatter...my dang joystick broke.

So unless I beat you guys to it... let's hear 'em please.

Huh, what, who, where?

*runs off to download*

And considering that Fileplanet is calling it Spaceforce: Rogue Universe, it's gotta be the right demo. That and they're both the same file size.

Give me about an hour and I might have some impressions for ya. Assuming I'm still not playing it. biggrin

After multiple tries I cant even beat the first 2 pirates. I got lucky 1 time and killed one but was too close and too damaged so I blew up too. I give up. I also cant take hearing that moron yell "Cover me!" another million times.

And a few tips for a successful demo:

1) Allow access to INGAME instructions.
2) Allow access to INGAME options (like enabling a joystick perhaps?).

More on this once I can find a manual.

The game supports joysticks of any sort, but I sure as heck can't figure out how to get the game to actually notice mine. I don't think it's in the demo for whatever stupid reason.

And since there's absolutely NO WAY to pull up the options from inside the demo (and as such get the key bindings), here they are typed out (moron devs):

WASD - drift ship that direction
QE - roll ship
Shift - afterburners
Mouse wheel - set speed

R - Lock on attacker
F - Lock on ship
V - Lock on visible
K - unlock
Y - EMP (gets rid of missiles at a cost of shield strength)
J - select object
Num 0 - scan object

The game itself is very pretty, and I can see it would be entertaining. The voice 'acting' and movies are laughable at best though, unfortunately.

Of random note - I still can't figure out how to pass the first mission. I can kill the pirates easily enough, but I don't know how to scan the thingies.

EDIT: And I finally figured it out: You have to get REALLY close to the satellites (within 150 distance or so) and you'll see an icon pop up to the left side of the screen. Hit Enter to activate them.

So nice of the devs to include the slightest bit of instructions with this demo.

Oh, and the best part? The game isn't exactly compatible with Vista. I installed the game, and it just didn't make a launchable icon anywhere. Oddly enough, the game did create an uninstall shortcut, but no game shortcut.

did you tell it to set up a shortcut for all users?

Well, I played some of the demo-  looks pretty but holy hell it's freaking hard!  I wish I had the mobility that those pirates have  disgust  I couldn't get the demo to recognize my 360 controller so I'm not holding out hope that the full version will but hopefully they five the options menu not working.

Yup. Pretty much.

And CeeKay - I most definitely did that. And I run Vista as an admin anyway, so it should just automagically appear.

As a random thought - there's both a story mode (which the demo is locked into) and another mode where you just play in the giant sandbox of a game (choose your race and profession as far as I can guess, as it's locked). I just wish the demo was a bit better.

if this is the actual first mission in the game it may turn alot of people off due to the difficulty right out of the starting gate.  Those pirates took alot of time to kill, and it seems that after a certain time they just start nailing you and you die very quickly (plus it seems like they have unlimited missiles  disgust).  I also noticed the friendly AI seems to turn on you very quickly-  I accidentally bumped into a friendly and they went red on me instantly.
