I would bet some real money its true. Its a rumor that has been going around for a while, Pachter has speculated on it as well, and the Ars source seems to be 2/2 on big announcements this year.

I just unboxed my 60gb one that came today from the 150.00 rebate deal when using the sony card, and.... WTF. It only came with composite video cables... How hard would it have been to put in one of those cables thats has both (component & composite).

This has been one of the (many) complaints about the system from when the price was first announced - no decent cables at all. Thankfully the console can use your PS2 cables just fine. They also tend to be cheaper to buy nowadays than the PS3 cables, too. Go figure.

As for the price - who knows. I thought Sony didn't want multiple SKUs and stuff because they confuse the populace and such.

I'm trying to remember back when this 40G model was first rumored/announced. Does it have WiFi?

Doesn't anyone else see this as a big mistake? Can Sony not pick one farking format and run with it? the 40gb would be the 4th version of the system in a year. How do you build consumer confidence in a product that you are constantly fidgeting with. They should've just stuck with the 60gb for 499 and ran with that for a while, but I think they are in serious panick mode and are just blindly throwing darts at the board hoping for a bullseye.

I think loss of consumer confidence (which has already been heavily shot anyway) and $399 is better than standing firm at $499.

Would not be surprised at all.  They had an internal hardware revision with the 80gb version, the cost of bluray components are down, not to mention Sony just had some kind of stock deal which people rumored would fund this price cut for the holidays.

That and Sony really, really needs a lot more sales of the system to convince the exclusivity holdouts like Square (FF13) and Konami (MGS4) to go fully exclusive.  The idea is, take an even bigger loss now to give them more bargaining power when it comes time to convince devs to go exclusive or multiplatform.  They don't want a repeat of this year where most of the big titles went Microsoft.

yeah, that will be going up for trade pretty damn quickly.  I foresee a surplus of 'used' Spiderman 3 blu-ray's flooding the market rather quickly.

Sadly this would still not be enough for me to grab a PS3 right now.  Need more exclusive games, and preferably rumble in the gamepad.

Would be nice to actually be able to play ps2 games again. smile

That is my pricepoint- not that I currently have the money for such luxury- for a PS3.

However, there is nothing on the system gamewise that makes me want it and I'm not a big enough moviephile to care a wit about bluray.

The price finally seems about right. I wonder how 360 will respond.

You mean like all the 'used' copies of their other movie pack in too? EB quickly dropped the 'value' of said movie to like a buck or so due to the number of people who didn't want it.

I sure as heck wouldn't want a copy of Emo-Man 3 in my high def collection. Just...ick.

They're still reeling from the warranty money they had to pay, that's why I don't see them dropping the price already.  So if they hadn't botched the hardware, I suspect they'd have dropped it $100 instead of $50 just to put the nail in the PS3's coffin.  Unfortunately for them, and fortunately for Sony, faulty hardware came back to haunt them, and now Sony has a bit of room to catch up.  However, with cash reserves strapped, Sony has had to do an IPO (not sure what it is) to fund this.

What I figure is that this latest price drop back at E3 and the time from here till then the SCE guys gathered the sales data from the price drop, made a pitch to Sony Corporate, and convinced them that dropping further would be a good idea to gain more market share this holiday season, especially since the 360 is going to explode with Halo 3's release.

Of course, there might not be another price drop/another SKU, but Sony has to respond to Halo 3 somehow.

meh on the Spiderman 3 bundle.

If they wanted to break my down my willpower they would need to put out a decently priced bundle WITH the new Ratchet and Clank (preferably a system that still had the emotion engine chip).

IPO

and unfortunately for Sony, MS is one of the few companies that can afford the loss of doing further price cuts, especially with the 360 about to explode with Halo 3's release.

IMO, MS was going to drop the price another 50bux later this year/Q1 2008. It's not hard math; they want to push the still-stocked core into the Wii market. ( I saw a few in the wild about a month ago). I'm thinking I'd agree with the 100 assessment stated above (the h/w losses due to defective design) slowed the drop a bit. That being said, they also saw Sony's "price drop" as a fire sale and why would they permanently drop product price for someone's one-time sale?

I figure Sony should do whatever they need to; they're no longer shooting themselves in the foot.

The bullets are chewing on ankle-bone.

from Wiki:

Quote
Angst is the German word for fear or anxiety. It is used in English to describe an intense feeling of emotional strife. In German, it is the fear of possible suffering and a behavior situated from uncertainty and strain which is caused by pain, loss, and death, and the term Angst distinguishes itself from the word Furcht (German for "fear") in that it is Furcht that usually refers to a material threat (arranged fear), while Angst on the other hand is usually a nondirectional emotion. It is usually, but not always, associated with teenage angst, or confusion and anxiety within the self.

I'd say that is a fair summation of what Parker goes through, even if his feelings were augmented by the symbiote.

Actually, most of Peter Parkers fear is not based on non-directional fear, but by the repeated attacks on his loved ones and the guilt associated with that and held in place by his direct responsibility to his uncle's death.

I have not watched Spidey3 though so I'd have to say that I'm not an expert on the subject. I just hate it when "doctors" take words from other languages and toss them around to sound important.

We already have a word for it: can we not just call it fear? Fear can have multiple definitions; maybe we need to make it more clear, but adding another word to describe a base idea that is ALREADY IN USE is kind of stupid.

Quote
fear      /fɪər/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[feer] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun 1. a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid.
2. a specific instance of or propensity for such a feeling: an abnormal fear of heights.
3. concern or anxiety; solicitude: a fear for someone's safety.
4. reverential awe, esp. toward God.
5. that which causes a feeling of being afraid; that of which a person is afraid: Cancer is a common fear.
–verb (used with object) 6. to regard with fear; be afraid of.
7. to have reverential awe of.
8. Archaic. to experience fear in (oneself).
–verb (used without object) 9. to have fear; be afraid.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Origin: bef. 900; ME fere, OE fær sudden attack or danger; c. OS fār ambush, D gevaar, G Gefahr danger, ON fār disaster]

—Synonyms 1. apprehension, consternation, dismay, terror, fright, panic, horror, trepidation. Fear, alarm, dread all imply a painful emotion experienced when one is confronted by threatening danger or evil. Alarm implies an agitation of the feelings caused by awakening to imminent danger; it names a feeling of fright or panic: He started up in alarm. Fear and dread usually refer more to a condition or state than to an event. Fear is often applied to an attitude toward something, which, when experienced, will cause the sensation of fright: fear of falling. Dread suggests anticipation of something, usually a particular event, which, when experienced, will be disagreeable rather than frightening: She lives in dread of losing her money. The same is often true of fear, when used in a negative statement: She has no fear she'll lose her money. 6. apprehend, dread.
Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1)
Based on the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2006.

I'd say that base was already covered. Oh, you may notice that angst is NOT in the synonyms.

Oh, and Spider-Man is in Wiki. So is "Pooping Back And Forth. Forever."

And.... not true.

http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=17512

Quote
In an interview with Reuters following his keynote at the Tokyo Game Show, Sony Computer Entertainment chief exec Kaz Hirai admitted that the PlayStation 3's pricing strategy is on his mind quite often.

"I think about PS3 pricing every single day. It is that important a factor ... But I am not planning any immediate pricing action now," he said.

Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter and other analysts had been fairly confident in predicting that Sony would lower the price on the PS3, the PS2 or perhaps even both, but Hirai made no such announcement. Pachter told GameDaily BIZ that he's a bit perplexed by Sony's non-action on the pricing front.

"I'm really not sure what they're thinking," he commented. "Hirai said no cut this year when asked the direct question, so I think the PS3 cut is unlikely until Spring. It now looks like the delay of Home and the lack of any killer games this year made them reconsider whether a price cut in 2007 would have much impact."
