well, I'd give impressions, but apparently they didn't test the game under Vista as it crashes within the first few seconds for alot of people using Vista.  Supposedly there will be a patch before the end of the week, but seriously, how the hell did this get out of testing?

Forced release dates (like in Hellgate London) combined with the usual crazyness of this time of the year (like in Hellgate London), and a side of lazy ass testers (like in Hellgate London).

No, I'm not bitter about how buggy HL is. Not at all.

You know, I haven't had the game lock up, show graphical abnormalities, or crash on me yet.  I am curious as to why so many people are experiencing this.

which game you talking about, SoF or HL?  If you read the Witcher thread you can see that sometime problems will just skip over a user.  Personally I've kinda shelved HL until they get things going a bit smoother (aka I gots lots of other games to play).

We had been talking about this when it was first announced, at a military games forum I hang out at. I'm puzzled though. It was announced as a "value priced" title but it's going for $39.99.  saywhat I guess they meant in relation to the full-price console versions.

supposedly Activision decided not to make it a budget game, but from what I've seen it still feels like one.  The manual is a whole 3 pages, the menus are very basic, as are the options, there's no actual intro movie and the start menu folder has a link to Activision Value.  from the gameplay videos it looked like it was worth 30 or 40 bucks, but now I have to wait for the Vista patch to find out.

plus the console versions are $59.99

Yeah, $60 for this is crap.  I am into gun porn as much as the next guy, but jeesh.  I would rather play through Black again.  Granted this has all that blood and gore, but whoopdedoo.  At $29.99 I would surely grab it.  Not a penny more.

OK, the patch came out just today.  Makes me think they knew about the issues and decided to release it anyways.  Anyhow, I'm kinda surprised at how nice the game looks.  The only graphics option is screen resolution, but the graphics themselves aren't too shabby.  Not massive next gen but still serviceable.  Here's some screenies from the second level (made using the lovely free version of FRAPS, converted from BMP to JPG):

No, it's not Crysis

Andy over at VE3D basically said the game was a load of crap. This is his impressions post:

Quote
Soldier of Fortune 3 is bad. Really bad. Activision told us over a month ago that it was not a budget title. The readme and install directory all state that Payback is produced and published by Activision Value. The readme also states that the game was developed by Cauldron, not an internal Activision team as claimed by the company's PR representatives. The proof is in the pudding as some may say, so how does Payback play? Exactly like a budget title.

Rather than explain just how average it is, we've captured the first two levels of the game for you to watch, though in the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that I gave up part way through the second mission having being killed for the fifth time by near-impossible to spot enemies who are capable of firing through walls.

well, the guys are camouflaged, and the whole purpose of camouflage is to make yourself harder to spot.  Haven't ran into anyone shooting through walls yet though, but between hard to spot enemies and shooting through walls I bet that guy must hate Crysis  icon_wink

I got in some more playtime last night- I'm at a boss fight with a helicopter gunship where apparently you only have 3 RPG shots to take it down  saywhat  I fired them off, hit it once and missed the other 2 times, and then couldn't find any more ammo.

On the plus side I haven't had any enemies shoot me through walls yet.

Bloodwise, I guess it's keeping SOF II's tradition -- on "full violence" mode, the amount of limb-letting and blood spray would make you either throw up or start laughing at the sheer over-the-topness.  saywhat

I'm still puzzled how this went from "value priced" as it was originally announced, to a $59.99 console/$39.99 PC title.

I re-installed and played SOF II for a little while the other day. It's really not some holy classic (better to remember Raven for Heretic, Hexen and Star Trek Voyager Elite Force), but for its day, it was a fairly venerable military shooter that probably went on way, way too long for its own good (I doubt anyone ever complained its campaign was too short -- if anything it overstayed its welcome) and probably had some of the longest load times I ever remember (even today, 2 GB of RAM and a system well beyond its requirements, it takes forever to load savegames and levels).

well, I finished tonight.   The last couple of levels become stupid hard, like getting killed in 2 shots from some shotgun on normal, and you're facing a ton of guys with those shotguns.  I don't know what it is about the SoF games where they devs decide to ramp up the difficulty to beyond insane in the endgame.

oh, and the ending suffers from Halo 2 syndrome.

Saw this at Blockbuster last night and I couldn't even muster up the desire to even rent it.  Maybe I will try it when I use one of my rent one/get one coupons from Hollywood that I have.  I like gun porn but this one, like Blacksite, just screams "not worth it at any price!" to me.

They probably think the SOF name alone will sucker some people into getting it.
