I have a ps3 now and am having trouble with download speeds.
I have a 50meg cable connection and have no trouble getting full speed from it, the lowest i get is around 42meg.
Updating PS3 games with latest patches etc seems to take hours. Is there any tips to try and speed things up or is it just the the network itself is slow?

yeah it always seems to be the case with the PS3,last night was a fluke as i downloaded 1754mb of heavy rain demo in 30 minutes which is good,but usually its terrible....usually its slow as hell and to rub salt in the wounds you then have to install your downloads
updates are the worse though..when compared to the 360,say the NXE a year or two ago,it was a complete overhaul and took something like 2 minutes to download and install...whereas PS3 updates take ages and ages,and when it has finished,most of the time you can't tell what has changed
i don't think there is a lot you can do,but just download when you aren't waiting for it,and go do something instead(or try and download at offpeak times like i did last night)

PS3 downloads suck for me, too, but not as bad as what Reemul's talking about.
Do an internet search, though. It may depend on your ISP. When I was looking into speeding up my connection, I remember reading about an issue a lot of people were having that didn't apply to me. There was a fix for it, too, but I have no idea what it was.

Yeah, do the research. It's never taken hours for me, but it has for plenty of other people. The speed, however, tends to fluctuate...randomly. |

I have a decent internet connection but PS3 downloads are usually super fast for me. I have zero explanation as to why? But hey, I'll take it  |

My PS3 downloads are fast too. I dont have any special set up either. Just my old crappy d-link, wireless router.

This is probably one of the weirdest things about the PS3.
I have a launch 60gb version, and for the first several months the download speeds were atrocious. Then at some random point in time, the speeds became a lot faster and have stayed that way for me since.

my download speeds over PSN have always been terrible...so bad that seeing an update when i try to play a game means finding something else to do for the next 30 minutes, usually playing my 360 instead...

Mark me down for slow downloads on the PS3 as well. It's not as bad as it used to be, but still much slower than downloading stuff over Live.

download speeds are usually pretty good for me, you might want to try direct connection by ethernet instead of wireless to see if you need to optimize the network setup. I had to move my router to get good reception.

Another - downloads are slow on the PS3. I did enter googles dns servers in hopes of speeding it up (something I read somewhere) and I think it helped, but I could just be imagining it.

The PS3 is generally slow at everything other than playing games. Downloads, updates, installs, and file transfers take a very long time to complete when compared to the X360 and Wii.

Well I think the Sony DL sucks compared to Live, but it does help if you turn UPnP off on your router.
The problem with that is that will set your NAT to moderate on Live.

If you are connected via wireless, try switching to a wired connection and see if that helps. It may not, but it's something easy to rule out as the cause.

Are you by any chance using the built in 802.11 connection? If so and the speed is set to auto, you'll probably experience slower than normal speeds. Try hard coding the speed on your access point to the highest you think your PS3 can sustain based on signal strength (i.e. 54, 32, or even 24 mbps) and you might see a speed increase.
