I've been eyeing this, like an idiot (I always get interested in these games and never play them).

Two questions:  How accessible is it?  How long does a single player game last?

Now I know you can tweak the settings to play for many, many weekends, but what's average and how short can a game be (and is that satisfying)?

Also , as an addition to the accessible part: How long does it take to start playing OOTB?

Thanks in advance for the info!

Very.  It's a rock/paper/scissors space RTS/4X hybrid with an ongoing tech tree, resource management, and planet development.  Sounds like a lot, but it's very well laid out and easy to get a handle on.  I think the level of detail is very well balanced for most players, but not all.

It depends on what size of map you're playing - anywhere from 45 minutes to hours upon hours.  Multiplayer of course is just wildly variable.

Any length is satisfying, but I prefer the long slogs myself.  Besides, I'm something of a reasearch & cap ship addict on SP.

You don't need to read a manual if you're familiar with RTS games.  The tutorial is so-so, but it will familiarize you with the game functions.  The official forums will also be of use.
Keep these things in mind:
Advent = faster research, energy weapons, best shields, most but weakest fighters/strike craft
TEC = best economy, projectile & ballistic weapons, toughest hulls
Vasari = super funky abilities, missiles that can partially ignore shields, least but strongest fighters/strike craft and (if you buy Entrenchment, which is HIGHLY suggested along with Diplomacy) devastating mobile star bases

I recommend Advent because beam laser weapons are cool to watch.

Quietly tucked away in Stardock's recent customer report, they say to expect "some important announcements" regarding Sins of a Solar Empire in 2011.  Sequel?  icon_biggrin

didn't they already announce that?  or was it a Sword of Stars sequel?  I can never keep the two games straight.

Sword of the Stars was announced a while back, but I've never heard mention of a sequel to Sins.  When/if it's announced, I will cream my jeans.  Christ, I still play Sins today and I still haven't even played much of two of the three races!  Awesome game, awesome value for money. smile

would it kill them to add a story driven campaign for a little variety?  I love SoaSE, but i would love the option to have a narrative driving my game from time to time.

The zeke does not need narrative in his games!  That would be like reading a book!  All words do is hurt the Zeke's brain!   Tongue

This is bullshit.  Brad Wardell posted this in his blog:

Quote
New Sins of a Solar Empire customers can pre-order Rebellion for $39.95.  Existing registered Sins players can upgrade to Rebellion for $29.95.

To pre-order, just head to the Store:  http://www.sinsofasolarempire.com/store.aspx

So I go to the store and click upgrade.  Here I'm greeted with two options: Preorder Rebellion for $39.95 or preorder it and get Diplomacy for...$39.95.  So because I don't have Diplomacy I don't get the discount!  Ya know why I don't have Diplomacy?  Because I didn't want it!  And now I'm being penalised.  Saying "registered Sins players" get a discount is disingenuous; what he actually appears to mean is players who bought Sins and both micro-expansions.

Is Diplomacy required then?

Edit: OK, calmed down now!  If Diplomacy is required then I guess it's fine, although now I wish I'd bought it when it was on sale.  I still think Brad's post was disingenuous though.

yeah, that is a bit misleading.  saying "registered sins players" is not the same as saying it requires both expansions.  like you i also did not buy diplomacy as none of the mods i had required it and i didn't see the need.

still, for $40, i hope this is not just a fancy new set of ships and a few tweaked gameplay mechanics.  if that's all they offer, i can go and get a mod doing similar stuff for free.

Just to clarify:  For the Rebellion discount you would need either Diplomacy or Sins: Trinity.

In other news, the Sins: Trinity v1.2 patch went out today.

Grabbed the pre-order despite not having Trinity or Diplomacy. Even though I DID pre-order Sins when it originally came out, and got entrenchment when IT came out. I am not a good enough customer to qualify for the discount.

Fortunately the game has been awesome and I expect Rebellion to continue the trend.

Edit: Also you can register it on Steam. Didn't notice if that was mentioned already.

Played a 1 vs 1 against the comp late last night. Loving the rebellion expansion, adds so much more depth and options to an already fantastic game. Also the upgraded graphics looks great and run smooth on highest detail.
