Ubisoft doesn't use Starforce anymore.

I'm planning on picking it up along with God of War 2 next week. They'd better get some copies in on release day, or I'll be one mad panda, especially since they will definitely hit me with the "You should have preordered" schick if I don't get a copy.

Feels too much like being at work to me (former submariner) Give me a few years. SH3 was pretty damn excellent though and this one looks even better.

I'm really, really excited. I know practically nothing about the game, except the "thrill of the kill" in SH3 was simply awesome. For that alone, I'm eagerly awaiting my chance to get this game.

I'm in. Already pre-ordered. Will be fun to see Pearl Harbor in the 40's, along w/ Aloha Tower. Listening to Tokyo Rose, Glen Miller while on patrol. Getting orders to rescue downed fliers, inflitrate Marine Raiders, and sink Marus. I can't wait!

I'm interested in this too, but I'm gonna have to wait and see how this runs on everybody's machine before running out to get this. Too bad there won't be a demo.

Yeah, definitely. Moments like those were really intense, and I was actually holding my breath during some of the more intense moments. I've never really enjoyed sims in general, but SH3 is still one of my favorite games, simply because of those intense moments.

I bought SH3 early on and just couldn't get into it for some reason and feel I missed out on something good. I won't make the same mistake with SH4, either I will buy it and play it, or I won't buy it. No middle ground, no creating backlogs.
Will be nice to hear impressions soon.

I can't find system reqs anywhere. How is the performance on this and for what level of systems? I've also heard that the resolution is hard-coded? True?

Don't have the game but I've heard repeatedly that the game will always render in only 1024x768. Changing resolution beyond that strictly changes the UI with all of the 3D being scaled to the new res.

The resolution was the case w/ the last two Silent Hunter games.
My copy arrives tomorrow... I'll report back on how it runs on my machine.

Starforce was the problem with the last one. I spent 5 minutes playing and 3 hours in recovery console 'playing' Recover my XP install.

There's a workaround for Starforce with SH3 involving installing, patching, and installing the no-cd crack before actually starting the game. Apparently Starforce won't install until you try to run it for the first time. Note I didn't have Starforce issues, so I never tried this.
SH4 is Starforce free!

Its a lesser form of the protection, but it still installs a driver for Ring0 access iirc. (I might be mistaken though)

Changing resolution beyond that strictly changes the UI with all of the 3D being scaled to the new res. It would appear to be true. I was quite excited when I was able to select a 1920x1200 resolution from the in game menu, but the 3D engine looks like its being scaled up. Here's an ingame pic that I took myself. All options set to maximum, with the exception of the film grain effect filter disabled. As you can see, the interface is all nicely rendered at 1920x1200. The ships and water however have noticeable jaggies from being stretched to a higher res. The game looks gorgeous and the water is amazing, but when you're trying to spot a spec on the horizon, I wish the engine would run at a true 1920x1200 res.

There is a sub school, but the help is rather limited from what I've seen. SH3 had a video that would show you what to do once it was your turn at the controls. SH4 just has a short text summary of what you need to do before the mission starts. Again, its pretty straightforward if you've played SH3, but for first timers I think there should be more help (which maybe I just haven't found yet).

Oh dont worry i will:) i got the hang of moving the sub, thats not too tough, the 2nd tutorial was shooting planes down, I think i shot two of mine down first and then couldn't hit shit But the game oozes atmosphere. I'm gonna keep at it.

Goldchamp, go to Filefront here and look at the official video files they have for Silent Hunter 3. There are 4 tutorial videos, navigation, flak gun, deck gun and torpedo use. While the control layout in Silent Hunter 4 is a little different then 3, it will give you a pretty good idea of how everything operates. The basics of the game aren't too hard to pick up after watching the videos.

I've never played a game so long without accomplishing anything...
Played all weekend, pretty much... Tried to do the first War Patrol mission several times... went too deep once because it was my first attempt at the game and the depth meter was in meters, not feet (as it says in the manual and which has since been fixed by a patch). Crashed to desktop once. Couldn't save anywhere in the War Patrol because I needed a save to be able to save, and the only thing that apparently generates that first save is the career mode.
Started a career mode... went to Hiroshima from Pearl to photograph ships. Ran out of gas on the way home, like 1000 miles short of Midway...
Okay, checked the forums, it said 'just use 2/3 speed'.
Redid the mission... got to Hiroshima w/ OVER a half tank of gas... LEFT Hiroshima w/ over a half tank of gas... ran out of gas 600 miles from Midway.
What the fuck?
