Anyone have some good sidescrollers to recommend?

Of course there's the classic Raptor which I've played multiple times.

However, it is far outclassed by the modern Jets 'n Guns.  More jets, more guns, more story, more awesome music, and more manly.

I want something equally awesome to sate my thirst.

Based on your examples you're asking for side scrolling shooters (aka shmups) and not side scrollers as in platformers, right?

If that's the case I don't really have any suggestions, unfortunately.

Trine is my favorite sidescroller of the last few years but its more platformer than combat oriented.  It's also on sale on Steam right now for $4.50.

Edit: After clicking your links Trine isn't what you're looking for at all.
