Does that Greenpeace thing mean I can park my boats in front of oil freighters and cause accidents? Or perhaps picket on a boat while watching helplessly as Japanese whalers kill whales?

I bought the first one on a big sale. Wasn't all that good... if you think about how Flight sims abstract land, but realize that a boating game will take place 90% of the time over wide expanses of water... well... you get the point.

My biggest beef is the lack of a "free sail" option like Flight simulator. I should be able to disembark at Marseille and get a reasonably accurate Mediterranean experience as I sail to Algeria. But it just isn't like that at all. You have either close to Marseille (not even the whole area around the city) or open sea.

Exactly.  Saw this criticism made of the last version of the game.  Guess the developers didn't care too much.

Does the sim do extreme weather?  Would be interesting to try and get through a "Perfect Storm".  A Deadliest Catch sim might be interesting as you compete with other boats.

well this one promises:

Realistic water & weather system. Sail a calm sea or take on the most extreme conditions ever witnessed at sea.

of course whether or not that means the Perfect Storm is possible isn't definite.

The game does look beautiful.     Arm the ships for multiplayer,  or throw in some monsters.

To be honest, it's not that the boats themselves are extreme, but that they're taking them into extreme (read exotic) locations. It's a bit similar to the 18 Wheels of Steel: Extreme Trucker game which I own. Very limited and scaled back version of the game though.

I have the '08 Collector's Edition, and I am pretty sure there is a free sail option. Pick your starting points, weather, time of day, and go where you want to go. I didn't spend a whole lot of time with it, but I did a thing where I started out in Rotterdam (it did seem like the city was all there as far as I could tell, IIRC, and then went out into the sea in a storm. Waves and everything. I didn't try sailing to another location, but I'd read that you could. Granted, the whole world isn't modeled with all the cities, but I do believe you could sail from one city to another city within the sim.
