I was thinking about giving SHC a go but I've never played the first game.  I was reading the review on IGN and they said it's fairly directly connected to the first game.  Am I going to be missing out on some serious story elements here?  Or will I still have an enjoyable time without knowing the backstory?

You could probably understand the story, but you wouldn't understand why some of the things that happen are important to the characters, thus lessening the impact of the story.  The first game is short and a fun game; I'd definitely recommend playing it first.

Definitely play the first. There is some stuff in the last half of Covenant that really won't make sense if you haven't played the first game.

Dammit I'm in Japan frown
I should have bought the first one as well when I was in Canada.  I suppose I could give Dragon Quest another go.  I got killed in the first dungeon and lost interest.

Just play that sonuvagun!  There's a connection, sure, but don't miss out on playing one of the best RPGs out there!

Play Covenant THEN play the first one.  Yeah!

Just level up in the area around the first city; there's plenty to see and do.  After that first dungeon, you won't need to actively level much.

SH:  C is better if you play the first, but it's not necessary.  Both games are fantastic, and I'd recommend playing either if you can.

I just don't know how anyone would understand the stuff with
Spoiler for Hiden:
the Major
on the second disk without having played the first.

I'm playing this right now. I died several several times in the first dungeon.

After that, the game really opens up. I'm about 23 hrs into it...It's simply exquisite.

This is true.  Unbelievably, I was just thinking about the other "link" from the games.  Totally forgot about that!
