I hope this is the one where they implement an engine to a point where it looks like more than an upscaled, crudely optimized PS2 port.  The previous Saints Row games had a lot of great game play, but after having played games like Red Dead Redemption, Just Cause 2, and Volition's own Red Faction: Guerrilla, they need to iron out this franchise's traditional technical problems to make good on its potential.

I'm actually really looking forward to SR3.  I think over the course of the series they've been getting closer to a perfect mix, so this may be the one that brings it home.  Or it could suck.

The Third sees the Third Street Saints evolve from street gang to household brand name - but their celebrity status has not gone unnoticed and they're now locked in a war with legendary criminal fraternity, 'The Syndicate'.

There's also a weapon that sounds like a gigantic, floppy sex toy. Apparently you can add an unmistakable degree of insult to your attacks by battering baddies with this particular item, and every weapon in the game also includes a new 'nut shot' move, each of which is unique to individual weapon.

Finally, multiplayer has been completely dropped from Saints Row 3, with the online focus instead shifting to co-op, says GI.

I think they meant no vs mode, just focusing on co-op.  Which is the only thing SR2 did well multiplayer wise anyhow....playing SR 1 or 2 for VS mode in multiplayer was just a try it once and say ya done it thing anyhow....the co-op's where it's at with this series potential.

I remember having a blast in vs mode in SR1, especially the lobby. It turned into a bloodbath usually, but not after a fun dance party

This is all good news otherwise. I played all the way through SR2, something that's unusual for me. I completed all the main missions in Just Cause 2, but didn't get 100% progress because the activities became too repetitive after a while.

I would say yes, if you like open world sandbox games. It's akin to Grand Theft Auto but (I think) more emphasis on doing things than watching cutscenes. It's got things to collect like cars and clothes, plenty of sideline activities, plus a decent main story line. I played it for dozens of hours, so there's plenty of gameplay per buck.

There's still people playing SR2 online as well. Not Call of Duty numbers, but you'll generally always find a game.

Saints Row 2 is one of the best games I've played so it's an easy recommendation, especially at its new budget price. As you progress in the story (and as with GTA, you can do pretty much anything you want in the open-world) you'll slowly start to put your gang back together and as you gain respect, you can start to recruit "homies" to help you on your missions.
When I got my first homie, we hijacked a SWAT armored vehicle and ran over a bunch of people and cars, only to be chased by countless police cars with a helicopter above firing at us and roadblocks everywhere. Was tough getting out of it, so we stopped at some under water cave site and got into a 10 minute shootout with the police before having to retreat inside.
The problem with the police AI is that, no matter what - they won't follow you inside buildings. So we were safe.. at least we thought, until we started exploring the cave and found out they had their own armed security force patrolling it, who began attacking us on site! Needless to say with my health already almost out, I didn't have the strength for a new fire fight and was taken out. Watched as my homie got shot and fell beside me before the screen went dim. And that was just another day in the life of Saints Row 2!

Cool. Then I may pick up the second one. This is why I love GTA3 and can't stand the latest version. The old one embraced the insanity of the sandbox while GTA4 wanted to ape The Sopranos which didn't work IMO. But sheer unbridled anarchy can be quite fun and is kinda what I'm looking for now.

Maybe it's from being on rails for the entirety of Alan Wake.

I tried playing the first prior to SR2 coming out and it was feeling dated then, so defintiely go with SR2.

Character Creation Hub before release

Saints Row: The Third is getting a standalone character creation hub called the Initiaition Station, due out before the open world actioner launches later this year, publisher THQ has announced.

The app will let you fashion your own character for use in the full game and then upload it to a special community site for all to see. You'll also be able to download other users' creations and make your own tweaks to them.

THQ hasn't detailed exactly how the hub will be delivered, but confirmed it will available for free on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 "in advance of" Saints Row: The Third which is due out in late 2011.

Anyone who pre-orders Red Faction: Armageddon – due out 10th June - from GAME will receive an early access code.
