Well.... so my first test was to load both games up so that they are standing in front of the Armadillo station and compare graphics. I immediately noticed the 360 looked FAR superior, which is usually NOT the case. I flipped back and forth and realized that the TV input tag had the 360 version showing at 1080p (upscaled obviously), but the PS3 version was showing at 720p. Nothing I have done so far has been able to toggle that to 1080p on the PS3. Any ideas?
hmmm I'll check what my ps3/tv displays when I get home if no one verifies in the meantime. Wasn't there a way to disable output resolutions so that the ps3 always scales to the resolution you choose? I'm a bit confused about the whole thing now.... Went into Display settings for the PS3 and unchecked 720p and 1080i to force it to go to 1080p. What does it do? It downscales to 420 instead of upscaling to 1080. Same thing if I try to force it to 1080i. The 360, on the other hand, is upscaling to 1080p and there is a NOTICEABLE difference between the quality of the picture between the two. Unless I'm doing something wrong.... this game looks better on the 360 upscaled to 1080p and is incapable of upscaling on the PS3.

Played about 10 minutes of the SP and got through the first 'mission'. Too soon to give any impressions. The text is SUPER small (30 inch TV) which is frustrating.
Went into MP free roam for about 3 minutes. Managed to kill 5 or 6 guys before I got killed.
Where does one see one's stats?
Have already seen a glitch. In MP I picked up someone's rifle and my hands were empty but I still had the gun. Lame.
Oh and how does one save? How does one quit?

The PS3 has no built in upscaler chip, so any processing used to upscale is taken from the game processor. The 360 has a built in upscaler.
I'm pretty sure both games render at 720p, however that likely won't make a difference on a good TV.
Actually, is your TV upscaling the PS3's 720p signal to 1080p? Some built in TV upscalers are kind of poor.
Also, it's more likely that the PS3's lower texture fill rate is an issue here.

saving is the same as in gta with an added option. you have safehouses with beds. you can also save in the open by starting a campfire.
quittin is for babies.

But whats' the MP draw, does the xp share across to SP?
Once upon a time, people enjoyed playing multiplayer games even without the incentive of levelling up. I'm just confused because I thought this was a SP game with a huge, in-depth storyline, but it sounds like you guys are all skipping that to shoot at each other online? The single player will be just as fun 3 weeks from now as it is today, while multiplayer is only fun while we're all playing the same game. Given how fickle our attention spa--look! War for Cybertron sounds really cool! Gotta enjoy multi for these games while the getting's good.

I've seen it mentioned you can buy places to save the game but nothing other than that. I've given up on the mission to break the stallion, gonna see how far the game lets me get with the other missions but I'm guessing not far, and since it's introduced I'm betting it'll play a big role later on too. so, here's my two big con's on the game so far: breaking horses herding horses/cows

I think I saw somewhere that the PS3 version is slightly sub-HD while the 360 version is full 720p.

A little worried about the small text, does this mean the game is unplayable on a SDTV(very good one, this is my problem, it just wont die on me).

Do the Bonnie missions before you do anything else. Hooks you up with the Lasso, a great horse, and some cash. Without the lasso, you can't capture bounties, you gotta kill em. Learned that lesson the hard way thanks, podnuh! - was all set to high-tail it back to armadillo, but now have my fine stallion ... so, here's my two big con's on the game so far:
breaking horses herding horses/cows neither's a whole lot of fun, but i've only fucked up on breaking once, & i only lost five head in the stampede... but, then again, i've always been more the domestic type ...

I bought the game, but i can't get more than 5 minutes into a mission in SP without it locking up. First game I've had to do that. I just experienced lockup #7, and almost tossed the controller threw the window. Im assuming since everyone else is playing, this is a me problem and not a game problem....ughhh..lol

My release day copy from Amazon has arrived so I was able to put in a hour just to see whats what. First off the xbox version looks great, no complaints here. Im playing on a 42" flat screen HDTV so no issues with text size either. Ive knocked off a few quests that were basically tutorials for shooting and riding. Ive found the horse easy to handle once you realize it takes a light touch and turning is more tapping in the direction you want and less steering. Glad I got the game even though I wont really be able to play it until next week. I leave on vacation with my gf tomorrow morning and Im thinking she'd be pissed if my carry on luggage was my x-box 360. Anyways, enjoy the game everybody from what Ive seen its gonna be a blast! Ill be back next week for some Red Dead fun. And remember Ill be in MP for two things, to kill and to screw.... and none of you are purty enough to screw.

so, here's my two big con's on the game so far:
breaking horses herding horses/cows
1) When you're leaning on the horse, you just push the left stick the other direction. Yeah, you're bouncing around a lot, but it's easy to see which way you're leaning. Also, don't push it all the way - half way or so depending on how far you see your character move. 2) Stay behind them, and if you want them to go left, you go towards the right and speed up a nudge. Push Up on the d-pad to make them go faster. Both (at least on the tutorial missions for them) are easy. And repeated tip from before - do ALL of Bonnie's missions until you get a lasso. Then head off and do whatever you want to do.

Sold in about 15 minutes after I listed it. So that's my first impression of the game - FUN PRE-ORDER BONUS!

So I played a couple of hours.
The game starts off somewhat slowly as you go through the tutorial areas and get introduced to the storyline. Once it opens up, however, it opens up wide and you are pretty much left to go out on your own and do whatever you want to do.
It definitely has a GTA in the West feel in as far as the map, mission layout, etc. However, that's where the similarities end. Unlike GTA, the game is beautiful. The presentation is just jaw-dropping in some areas. Everything just feels *right* - from the feel of riding a horse to the feel of the gunfights to the Old West atmosphere of the land. Voice acting is really great so far and the game has a sharp sense of humor.
If you were worried at all about length like I was, I doubt you will be after you realize the scope of the side challenges. Performing certain actions triggers certain challenges, which you can work on to become really famous. These almost have the feel of Call of Duty achievements or even MMO quests. Even outfits in the game are unlockables that consist of multi-part quests. Once you "discover" an outfit, you'll have to do something to collect each piece of it before you can wear it. Combine this with the random side missions and the "stranger" quests - in which you are given a side mission by a stranger in town, and you could spend hours upon hours not even touching the storyline.
The random stuff that can happen is just awesome. Early on before I realized I could choose bare fists as a weapon, I was attempting to save a woman from a couple of guys that were harassing her. I was shooting them, aiming for their legs to incapacitate them without killing them, but it turned into a vicious firefight right in the middle of town. A couple of stray bullets later and the marshal and his deputy were on my tail. Panicked, I took off running into the desert, but there was nowhere to hide. Then I remembered I could whistle for my horse. I whistled, and she came running at full gallop. I grabbed the reins as she ran past and did a running leap into the saddle as the lawmen's bullets whizzed past my head. I hauled ass out of there and finally got away, only to return to town later under the cover of darkness to sheepishly pay my bounty.
Without a doubt this is the closest video gaming has come to genuinely letting you play a Western movie. I just kept thinking that this was like taking those valiant attempts at western games like Call of Juarez and GUN and just removing all the structure and limitations and just letting you play in the world. Yes, FINALLY we got a good Western game. Woo hoo!!!

after a couple-3 more hrs (sp): 1) as a non-rockstar fan, this is easily the best rockstar game i've played, mostly because, unlike the gtas, i actually like the environment... & the mode of transportation ... 2) what gives with bounty missions? 3) biggest disappointment: i can't name my horse . &, to the extent that that's my biggest disappointment, i'd say the game's pretty darn good...
