Call of Pripyat is due this fall, and they are developing another full S.T.A.L.K.E.R. title.  it won't surprise me to see Fall 2009 turn into early 2010, but I'd be happy to see more of Pripyat.

I was actually thinking about playing some of STALKER. I played the original game and liked it a lot, but got distracted by something. I haven't tried the second one, I think I heard some bad stuff about it. Anyone knows more?

I had fun with the second one, but it's initial release had alot of the same bugs that the first game had.  The faction war idea never really seemed to come to fruition as you can ignore it with pretty much no consequences, the last few levels basically turned the game into an action FPS and the lvery ast level was confusiing as to where you were supposed to go as they left it a bit too open.

some more detailed impressions, start here.

I played it for a few hours (Steam makes it too easy to buy stuff smile) and I agree with your, CeeKay, assessment of it in that thread - I loved the original, but they rushed this one out. It has so much potential (IMO the setting is more intriguing than Fallout), but the implementation is so bad it's sad. There were like 9 patches and the game still CTDs regularly - I had to switch to the third (fourth?) best renderer option to get some kind of stability. Tasks get completed/failed/cancelled without telling me I had that task in the first place.

Quest rewards seem screwed up - I got a medikit (!) as a reward for a pretty long quest that had me running around and talking to people for like 30 minutes, I was so frustrated I killed the questgiver. Often I am paying 1000+ for a stash info only find a couple of bandages in there - lost like 10K doing that.

I don't know what to think about this game. I think I am going to continue for a couple of evenings, I really want to like it, but the game's trying real hard to dumpen my enthusiasm.

you could probably find it for cheap now.  it has it's moments up until the couple of levels and then it sorta dies.

I actually REALLY enjoy it now. Read this article : http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/04/27/stalker-the-mods-return-to-clear-sky/ if you don't believe me smile, but the game has really improved since last year. With OGSM mod (which linked somewhere in the comments to that article), the game is REALLY REALLY good.

I just restarted yesterday with OGSM and it's like a brand newgame (yes, it does have the aforementioned sleeping bag included). Weapons/armor/upgrades are re-balanced, new ones added, the Zone is more dangerous (and spooky) due to more monsters (some of them are new too), AI fixes, etc. Highly recommended.

I'm trying the first STALKER again (it kept crashing in the same place when I first got it, no matter what I did).  What patches/mods should I put on there?  And where would I get them?  I don't want to stray to far from the original experience, but I'd like it to be stable.

definitely get all the official patches.  as for mods for the first game I'm not quite up to date on what's out there- the only one I ended up using was one that let you carry more stuff because running back and forth between the traders got boring.

a new interview with ann idea of what the system specs should be:

Quote
Yavorsky: No exact ship date so far, but we expect to get the game out this Autumn already. The game should be pretty playable on a machine like:

- Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 / AMD 64 X2 5600+
- 2 GB RAM
- 512 MB DirectX® 9.0c compatible card / nVIDIA® GeForce™ 9800 GTX / ATI Radeon® HD 4850

As you know, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has a tweakable menu with a lot of parameters to affect the performance. So you can adjust it as you like to achieve the comfortable play. Anyway, if you want to play it in max quality and resolution, go for as powerful machine as you can - there's never enough in this case.

Looking forward to this even though imho they are 0-2 on endings. If this is more like the first game with a real ending it will be great.

I enjoyed Stalker until I got to that town. From there to the end I disliked the game. In the town all Id do is die a lot and usually have no idea from where.

This trailer shows whats so great about these games. Best atmosphere of any game ever, imho. I guess there has been a ton of bugs. Although I played Clear Sky fully patched late after it came out, I played the first one through from day one with no problems. They had terrible endings to the first two. If they fix that, this could be up there with the greatest games ever.

that they seem to be really good at.  Clear Sky was much better graphicswise than the first game, and they bring it up a notch again this time.

of course the real question is, while making it prettier, did they do a better job optimizing it this time....

(oh, and make the ending level(s) not suck.  they have yet to stick the landing on this IMO)

I guess I need to pick up a video card faster than my 8800gt to get good rates in Clear Skies. It seems to chug something fierce. I can only fear what this new one will do.

What rez are you trying to play at? I played CS on my 8800gt cranked with no issues. Can't remember for sure what I played at but I think it was 1880x1050. If not it was 1280. I hope they haven't boosted it to much. Optimisers these guys are not.

Maybe they are redoing the ending icon_confused. Naw, because the Russian version seems to be not delayed. I would be bummed about this but I have Risen and Dragon Age coming out so I am game set for a while.

DX10 vs DX11 comparisons.  maybe it's too early in the morning, but the only difference I can see is the DX11 ones look a bit brighter.
