It's interesting that the machine has a DVD-RW drive. Why would the drive need to be RW?

Does it actually say anywhere that it has a DVD-RW drive, or does it simply support the format as read-only?

If it includes a writer, great, but I haven't seen it actually SAY as much.

Read only (supposedly).  The current Xbox is a mess of format support, as depending on which drive you have in your Xbox it supports DVD+/-R,RW - although it varies even among Xbox's with the same manufacturer's drive.

Rumored Price Points:

$299 for the bare bones version

$360 for the Deluxe version with Hard Drive, remote, etc....

If Oblivion is a launch title, which all signs are pointing to YES now, then I am going to be first in line for this bad boy...heck even if it is not, I am going to be getting it on DAY 1 in all honesty.

I am going to be preordering it at Gamestop the day it is available for preorder....the $360 version, of course.

Yep, I am going to guess it would go on preorder this Friday because MTV is unveiling it and they may set price points...either that or it will be next Tuesday because MS will have had their conference Monday night.

Didn't one of the official-looking pictures show that the hard drive is 40 GB rather than 20?  Also, I'd be surprised if the two versions (if there are two versions) were only $60 apart.  Why would anyone buy the non-hard drive version?  The 64 MB memory cards would probably cost $30 or so, and if you bought two, you'd equal the $360 price and only have 128 MB.

That may be what they're going for by offering it at a difference of only $60.  I mean, if they can offset the costs of hardware and cover the licensing fees for the backward compatibility, it's in their interestest to get the hard drive version in as many homes as possible.  If it achieves wide market penetration, then the developers are more likely to support its features, which is good for the 360's image.

It's also possible that the $360 is an intro price point, and the price might go up later.

EGM Staffer on Gaming-Age said this doesn't match what they've been told.

He also said:

Anyway, any discussion based on the retarded xblgamers.com price leak should probably stop as not even Microsoft knows what they're going to charge for the system at this point. Also, one SKU, not two.

The one SKU comment is very interesting since most seemed to think the likelihood of two SKUs from the get go was pretty high.

If one SKU is true it could help explain the 20GB feature from this spec-list which wasn't as much as people expected from an add-on.  If its standard though it would be sufficient for Live downloads, custom soundtracks, using HDD as cache, etc.

It might also mean that there is only one SKU for the Xbox 360 and the HDD is strictly an add-on not as a different pack-in package.

I wouldn't be suprised if the RW support is designed to allow direct download burning by a PC as a game purchase option, a la Steam and Half-Life 2.

As for pre-ordering, GameStop will begin taking pre-orders on Thursday or Friday of this week.  They are doing it without any quantity committments from MS which means they will probably only do pre-orders for a short time and then suspend them until they have firm numbers.

That seems like about as much as they could put in and still sell the thing for $300 without starting to loose money again.

Ok, I just had a weird conversation. A co-worker of mine was a recent worker for Big Huge Games. We were talking about the Xbox 360 specs. I was wondering what the usb ports would be used for. I guess it could be used for digital cameras or web cam add ons.
He said " To plug in mouse and keyboard for RTS."
At which point his eyes got real big and covered his mouth as if he said something he really shouldn't.
hmmm.. I tried to press him if he knew which RTSs but he didn't want to talk about it anymore.

Well, with the supposed synergy of XNA architecture, I would not be surprised to see PC games that are easily portable to the Xbox 360 and vice versa.
