I KNOW! New gen open world?! GIMME GIMME GIMME GIMME

Only problem? It's most likely cross gen, as most multiplatforms will be for the next year.

Unless... Well Bethesda isn't quite as scared of releasing to new consoles.

so you had to read that in 26 days it will be December? icon_wink

Next Gen Fallout sounds awesome, but you never know with Bethesda,it could still be quite some time away and just be for PS4/PC/Xb1 rather than 360/PS3 as well(I can't say next gen, because with the PS4 now out,it IS next gen..current gen....ahh,whatever)

EDIT: if anyone has any Cats, try that link above with the morse code and see how far back your cats ears go back icon_lol

I can't imagine that Bethesda would want to go through the headache of doing a cross-gen title again. This particular genre is the one that would benefit the most from going exclusively next-gen.

But surely that cannot be? I remember the outcry when Elder Scrolls online was announced, that this was the end of new episodes in the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series.

It would probably get people to buy the new systems so I could see it going only next-gen.

if it was published by MS or Sony I could see that, but I imagine Bethesda/Zenimax would want maximum spread.  Plus it will only really be a glorified Skyrim mod.

It's a new engine, which makes it less likely that it's cross-platform. Also, this game isn't likely to be released until winter 2014, at which point the total number of next-gen consoles sold is likely to be more than 20 million, a very respectable user base to focus on.

The timing of this screams next gen to me.  Website supposedly going live the day Sony releases the first (technically second, mea culpa Nintendo)  next gen console can't be a coincidence

Yeah, gotta admit, they would actually have a much, much easier time trying to make a new open world game for new gen consoles (can't say next gen anymore because it's here!) and PC.

They've been pushing up against the absolute limit of what consoles could do. I mean, skyrim was operating on the old 512MB and the tricks they used to be open world there got really out of hand.

hopefully this means the end of boxed in towns and caves.  really want to see this like the gothic games did.  add this and better physics modelling and it will be awesome.

of course, knowing Bethesda, they'll still have wonky ass 3rd person cameras  icon_lol

Part of the reason why they had bad 3rd person cameras is also why, even in Mass Effect 3, Shepard can't lower his weapon outside of cutscenes or very specific non combat areas.

You hit a point in AAA development where you literally do not have the extra system memory to add the relatively tiny amount of code and animations to do that.

I know it sounds crazy, but it's true. There was a seriously silly amount of things developers had to do to fit some of our most beloved games into the limited resources of these consoles.

If my work on my own unity engine game has shown me, a good third person camera is actually an incredibly complex and subtle implementation.

I know we've had a couple of threads about Fallout 4 already, but they have been more of the "is Fallout 4 coming?" variety. Due to Bethesda just having registered the Fallout 4 trademark, we can stop speculating. Fallout 4 is coming. Let this be the thread where we discuss it as more information is released. We're likely to see some kind of teaser at the VGX in December. Until then, we've got very little to go on.

My personal wish is that they don't even try to make it for current gen consoles. Make it for PS4, Xbox One and PC, and forget the rest. It's the only way we'll be able to get away from the problems we've had to suffer through in open-world games for years. Since they're using a new engine for this game, the odds of this being a purely next-gen game are good.

They need to go back to the F1&2 style of that perk where each weapon results in a different...bloody mess.  The way the perk was in the new games was just boring.

dangit, I meant Mysterious Stranger, not BM (just woke up a half hour ago, need beer).  BM got ridiculous after a while.

never got far enough into Vegas to unlock it.  of course I didn't get around to finishing Fallout 3 until just over a year ago, and Vegas is on my play list, probably for early next year.

if they're just registering the trademark, then i'd think we're at least a year and probably more like 2 years away from release, meaning there's no way this would come out for ps3 or xb360

As the article points out, the trademark for Fallout: New Vegas was registered 4 months before that game's teaser trailer, and less than a year before the game's release. It's very likely that Fallout 4 will be out by the end of 2014 if there's a teaser trailer for this in December.

well Fallout New Vegas was used with Fallout 3's Game Engine,if they are starting from scratch, especially now on next gen,i can see it being a lot longer wait this time, depends i guess on what the situation is with the game engine

I suppose it also depends on development on the new machines as well as i read somewhere that it takes a lot less time for PS4 development over PS3 development

You can safely assume that they've been working on this for a while. It would be highly unusual for Bethesda to announce a game like this two years in advance in any case.

I think he was talking about the Mysterious Stranger perk, which had the random chance of someone showing up to help you in a fight.  In FO3 it was a Humphrey Bogart like character that showed up, and in Vegas it was supposedly a chick.

New Vegas had both the Mysterious Stranger and Miss Fortune perks.

Miss Fortune was a new one where a showgirl would appear when you used VATS to attack something, usually triggering when you fail to kill something. She would appear and do low damage, but also apply debuffs and limb damage criticals, even causing grenades in their inventory to explode.

Fallout 4 could be getting a big reveal in just over six days' time.

That's if the Fallout 4 teaser site 'thesurvivor2299.com' is to be believed, as it points to "nuclear winter" in just over six days with a counter ticking down to that very moment.

yeah, I read that.

the /r/Fallout thread on redditt has some great digging and hints that the whole "survivor" theme could be pretty damn interesting.  it would make for a much different intro to a Fallout game, that's for sure.
