I thought Rock Band didn't believe is signing artists exclusively?

I think this deserves its own topic. It's of interest to many who may not own Rock Band (yet).

I've never had an interest in getting GH or RB, but as someone who grew up listening to the Beatles this intrigues me. If it's just a dabbling of songs I'd pass, but if we are talking some serious content (like the Red and Blue albums, hope hope) I might have to take the plunge.

Okay, but there's a lot of discussion going on in that other thread.  Some of it is even interesting.  Come check it out.

What's with all the forum police these days?  The Beatles coming to a music video game--any music video game--is huge news, and totally deserving of its own thread if someone felt like starting one.

I wasn't following the story earlier this year but I'm hoping this news means Michael Jackson did end up losing the publishing rights to his Beatles song collection?

Well, it turns out that it shouldn't be in the RB DLC thread, as it's an entirely separate game.

Umm... Not an expansion? Whole new game? What are the details? Are we going to need to buy all new instruments?

Potentially OUT!

As stated in the conference call, current peripherals will work with the new game, so you don't need to buy new ones.  Of course, every music game Harmonix has put out has had new peripherals come out at the same time as well.

*edit because Wonderpug's a jerk* Every music game that Harmonix has put out from GH2 onward (since the GH1 guitar was required) has had new optional peripherals.

Interesting. Hopefully they'll do what they did with RB1, and allow you to export your songs from this new collection into RB2. Isn't there some Walmart exclusive music game (it's either GH or RB based, I don't remember) that lets you do the same thing?

I really think they should offer it as a standalone game and as downloadable content. They are missing out on some money otherwise.  I am not very interested in having to load up any other games to get my music groove on.  One disk should do it all and is pretty much what Harmonix promised with the whole Rock Band concept.

***Copied for the generic DLC thread....

The fact that this and the AC/DC pack will be separate games and not ala cart DLC is disappointing to me.  Just like there are not $40 worth of AC/DC tracks I am interested in, there are certainly not $60 of Beatles tracks.

Definitely deserves its own thread.

Here's what I last posted in that thread...

http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/10/live-blog-the-b.html

A few tidbits:

Quote
Van Toffler, president of MTV Music and Logo group, takes the mic. "Today, we're announcing an exclusive partnership with Apple Corps, MTV Games, and Harmonix to create a brand new video game featuring the music of the Beatles."

Actually, it's Jeff Jones, CEO of Apple Corps, talking next. "In MTV and Harmonix, we see partners who admire the Beatles and Apple's original spirit and vision." Talking about introducing Beatles to new generation of fans and giving existing Beatles fans a new interactive way to experience the music. Giles Martin, he says, will "bring the same passion" to the development of the videogame as he did the Beatles Love soundtrack and show. And he's on the call today.

I'll bet you guys had no idea I was so wealthy and powerful, and that *I* controlled The Beatles' music.

Now polish my shoes!

HA HA. I was close. it certainly isn't DLC.

So now the question. Why the fuck is this a seperate game? I mean aside from the obvious answer. This makes about as much sense as polar bears living in africa.

I'm guessing it's more along the lines of AC/DC except the beattles(well their family or however now) wants even more control. I mean really. I can't see where this is going and the possible pluses. A lot of people are pissed off. No picking n choosing means this is an automatic pass. Not really a beattles person in the first place.

A lot of people pissed off?  seriously?  Do they realize that instead of a handful of Beatles tracks for DLC we get an entire game full?  I think it's pretty fitting considering it's one of the most influential bands EVER since the term 'Rock' was even coined.

Seriously, you know that if Led Zepplein ever caves in they'll get the same treatment, right?  The fact that Guitar Hero: Aerosmith sold well is a good indication that this sort of focus in a music game can work.  Mind you, I can't stand Aerosmith and I was out of that one from day one, but you never heard me begrudge others who love the band their fun.

That's true. But back when GH Aerosmith and GH Metallica were announced people were saying that Activision was milking the GH franchise.  EA said that Rock Band would be a "platform."  Which seemed to be reinforced by the ability to import RB 1 songs into RB 2.

But that approach seems to have gone out the window with the announcements of the AC/DC and Beatles stuff.  The great thing about RB's DLC (and even ITunes) has been the ability to pick and choose exactly which songs you want without being forced to buy the chaff that you do not.  I'm sure AC/DC is only being sold as one package at the request of the band and their record company.  It seems that since the record companies can't get people to buy whole music albums anymore, they are trying to force it on us through the emerging music video game medium.

The whole reason RB1 content was importable was to keep the people who already owned it happy.  RB2 just came out.  How much money do you think they would lose if The Beatles disc was instantly importable?  The only people making money would be the rental stores.  It wouldn't surprise me to see an export come around in a year or so, but making a big hitter like the Beatles immediately importable would cost them millions in lost sales.

Well it's not clear that this is even the Rock Band engine.  Especially, with their specific intent to not brand this as a Rock Band product (unlike the AC/DC disc).  Further, it may not even be an MTV/EA thing- it's very possible that Apple Corps has been very specific about how the music can be used and presented and could bar it being delivered as DLC. Given how long it took them to allow Beatles music as downloadable music I wouldn't be surprised to find that they are taking a very controlling hand with the product.

Yeah - It was my understanding that even though the AC/DC tracks were on a separate disc, you would be able to load them up as DLC and play them in RB like any other song.

If this isn't the case with this Beatles 'thing' I'm not sure that I'd really be all that interested.

The whole point of RB for me/friends is that any song could be played at any time. You would be able to mix things up and go from artist to genre as you wanted.

Playing The Beatles for a while and then having to pop out the disc and play everything else isn't something that I'd want to do.

well here's my theories on why this is a seperate game

it's a documentary type thing in which you play the songs as it goes along
it features a more robust character development system. you build a character up and instead of getting stats you can get perks. like say your star power lasts a few seconds longer or something.

no basis other than i just can't figure out wtf this is a whole new game. i've been thinking where the music game genre can go from here. maybe this game is the answer.
