Ugh.

The song list has me inching ever closer to canceling my pre.  I needs to make a decision.

Talking with the guys from Harmonix, they are doing their best to get an album a week going for DLC.  If you don't like the tracks, wait a few weeks. smile

Yes, but grateful dead and nirvanna do little for me either.

I think what KD means is that there are going to be more than two weeks of this.  If they really keep up that DLC pace, odds are you'll find an album you like pretty quickly.

Gotta ask, ATB, what are you looking for?
Some Yanni?  icon_smile

While everyone has their own tastes, I'm guessing that a title like this is giving the music that most people would expect from it.

You can't get too far away from popular rock music and expect to sell the thing.

New additions:

  # Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" [master track]
  # Red Hot Chilli Pepper's "Dani California" [master track]
  # KISS' "Detroit Rock City" [master track]

Not bad.  Not great, but certainly not terrible.

I keep hoping they'll throw us black/speed/death/whatever metal fans a bone and give us at least one track that we can growl along with instead of singing.  Some Opeth would be sweet.

A smattering of new info from Gamespot's Hardware Q&A

Confirmation that they're doing what they can to have compatibility with non-RB guitars
Confirmation that the 360 bundle will include a USB hub.
You can "speak" the cowbell/tambourine parts by yelling "pow!" but you won't look as cool.
You can plug regular 360 headsets into the drum or guitar.
And a sad one: When playing online, bandmates will not be able to hear you sing

One thing I'm confused about: They mention $200 as the approximate price for the "full four-player band experience."  Hasn't the hypothetical $200 bundle been thought to have just one guitar?

Yes, the online singing might blow, but if this is true, $200 for all four instruments most certainly would not blow.   drool

I can see why the made the singing like that, but it should be a toggle the singer can have on or off. They probably do it so people can actually find singers to play online. Imagine you're rocking out and then you hear this god awful noise only to discover your singer is not only tone deaf, but probably deaf just in general. I know we all don't want to hear horrible singing. But if the person knows they can sing they should have the ability to turn it on. Or all players have the toggle actually.

Here's the full quote on the singing:
Quote
GS: As we understand it, bandmates won't be able to hear the vocalist sing when playing online. Are there plans to add that functionality in the future?

DS: When playing online with others, your bandmates cannot hear you sing; they can only watch your pitch and score on the screen to ensure you're keeping up to par. I can't speak to future plans in this area at this time.

Does this mean that even the Live Headsets will be inoperable during the songs?  The lack of singing-over-IP is bad enough, but that's a big hit to the online fun if you can't even talk to each other during the songs.  If you can use the headsets, couldn't you just wear the headset at the same time you sing into the mic in order to get your singing transmitted?

Me confusded.  retard

It doesn't make much of a difference to me, as my wife has already decided that we will own all necessary instruments regardless of cost.  But an extra guitar included in the $200 entry price would definitely be a nice bonus.  We're buying it day-one regardless of cost, and for once I won't have to justify such a high cost for a video game like I did for Guitar Hero II.  But once she played Guitar Hero II, and then heard about the drums in Rock Band, the money was already immediately set aside.

I would bet that the headset still transmits just like it does in a normal game....with the slight VOIP delay that would throw you off your timing if you were really listening to the singer.

I doubt online play will work well anyhow, unless you're playing with people in the same town.  Getting the ping times over 100ms will cause lag, lag will cause misses.  There's no way around it.

I would hold out judgment on not being able to hear vocals online.  If this is an option, it's a great option.  If it's not possible, it blows.

Even if people have bad pings, it's not like the note hits are going to be calculated on someone else's system; your ability to hit or miss your own notes is going to be the same as off-line play.  I can't see lag being a problem unless it gets so bad that the game has to pause to re-sync the systems or something.

And what are you waiting for to judge not being able to hear vocals online?  Do you not trust the Harmonix rep they chose for the Q&A?

He's saying if it's just an option you can turn on and off, that's fine. If it's hard-coded that you can't hear the vocals (which I'm guessing is the case), then it blows.

I'd like to be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's the "it blows" situation. This doesn't seem to leave much room for interpretation: "When playing online with others, your bandmates cannot hear you sing; they can only watch your pitch and score on the screen to ensure you're keeping up to par."

If anyone's curious, here's a snippet of what the Penny-Arcade forums' resident Harmonix rep had to say about the online singing:

Quote
An extremely "lagless" connection tends to have lag of 40-50ms, which is about 3 game frames. A more typical 100-200ms would be 6-12 game frames... For chat, no big deal. For music rhythm games, it's deadly if things get out of sync.

Most net games can do some sort of predictive analysis and correction, which gets done in RB to a degree when dealing with the non-vocal parts. Since we're not sending audio over the net (just playing back the song's audio tracks), it's a non-issue.

Sending a player's vocal performance isn't impossible to do. It could probably even be done without adding additional lag (though, not being the audio guy, I'm not sure the details of that or the quality you would get). Even without additional lag, however, you can't escape the initial, existing lag. ("You cannot change the laws of physics!")

And before I get jumped on as far as what we could have done... believe me, if you suggest it, we've already tried it and a dozen other things. (And no, I'm not going to go into detail, confidential and all that, so don't ask...)

Here's something to move it even closer to the peak of awesomeness.

Amazon and Gamestop listings for the big Rock Band bundle package are now at $169.99 instead of $199.99.

Don't know for sure if this counts as the "big announcement" Harmonix was supposed to release today, but it's pretty big news in my book.  It's just 15% less on paper, but I think the $169 number is a lot gentler on people's price perception.

Saw that, and I'm pretty happy with it.  Perception is everything, and $169 looks like a lot less than $199.

Of course, I was getting it either way, but I'm perfectly fine with paying $30 less.

Ugh, also announced the release date to be on Black Friday.  If they can manage to get entire Rock Band kiosks up in the big box stores on Black Friday, that would be pretty damn good publicity, but what a pain if you're one of the many who'd rather eat turkey sandwiches than go anywhere near a mall.

Not that it matters to me, I'll be on a cruise ship docked in Grand Cayman that day.  Cool

EA announced it for a Black Friday launch?  I'm certain that they'll get it in stores before that.  EA likes to announce release dates a few days after they ship to ensure that it's in all stores on launch day.  Fortunately, my copy's reserved at a standalone Gamestop miles from any mall if it does happen to launch on that evil day.

Evil Day launch seems confirmed.

Are there any prices listed for the Guitar Hero 3 guitar controller sans game?  If the $100 GH3 bundle pricing is correct then this RB pricing will be within $10 of GH3 w/ 2 guitars.
