First, the announced tracks:

The Who "Won't Get Fooled Again"
Mountain "Mississippi Queen"
David Bowie "Suffragette City"
Black Sabbath "Paranoid"
Blue Oyster Cult "Don't Fear the Reaper"
The Ramones "Rockaway Beach"
Rush "Tom Sawyer"
Bon Jovi "Wanted Dead or Alive"
Nirvana "In Bloom"
Stone Temple Pilots "Vasoline"
Weezer "Say It Ain't So"
Foo Fighters "Learn to Fly"
Metallica "Enter Sandman"
The Hives "Main Offender"
The Strokes "Reptilia"
Queens of the Stone Age "Go With the Flow"

Tom Sawyer is a cover, for those Rush-inclined patrons.

More interestingly even:  http://kotaku.com/gaming/e307/rock-band-to-feature-full-albums-metallica-277471.php

Metallica's on board.  Enter Sandman is on disc (as noted above).
And - they're going to offer entire albums to download, beginning with "Who's Next".  More like this, please!

Dayum.   That's just... dude  dudeicon_eek

I remember hearing something about a Guitar Hero 3 game, but it's been drowned out by the sheer potential awesomeness of Rock Band.

I keep praying for some Pink Floyd albums.

I think the idea of complete albums in general rocks, hope they don't cost a fortune.

Wow... I'm so sick of hearing "Tom Sawyer".  And "Spirit of Radio".  There are more than two Rush songs, people!!!

[edit]  Hmm... the entire track list looks like it was pulled from listening to an hour of a typical "playlist classic rock" station.

When you find a classic rock station that plays Nirvana, Weezer, The Ramones, Stone Temple Pilots, and Queens of the Stone Age, please be sure to let me know.  slywink

Aside from Queens of the Stone Age... just search the dial.  They all do.

The most disappointing time in your life is when songs released while you were in high school start getting played on classic rock stations.

They apparently have a different definition of "classic rock station" where you live.  They don't play anything recorded past 1980 on the ones around here.

The next full album they'll be offering?

Nevermind.

I think there's basically no chance for Guitar Hero 3 to earn my money at this point.

And I don't even care what the $/song ratio is.

Did anyone here read Bill's post about Rock Band and specifically a subscription model for songs?

Thoughts?  I'd gladly pay $20/month for such a service.

An attempt at $20/month would really kill my interest in Rock Band.  I'm paying ~$260 for the instruments and games, no way am I going to pay another $240 a year for the songs.  A subscription fee or very overpriced individual song downloads are pretty much the only potential deal breakers for me at this point with Rock Band.

It would depend on what you get for that $20 a month.  If it included a great deal of content, I would definitely do it over having them nickel and dime me like Guitar Hero 2 has been doing on XBox Live.  If it's $20 a month for 2 songs a month, though, I am obviously not interested.

This terrible, terrible GamePro preview has some Rock Band info that was new to me:

  • BOSS effects confirmed for the 5-way effects switch
  • "downloads each week following the release of the game"
  • "MTV and Universal put together a music advisory board, headed up by the E Street Band's Little Steven, to spearhead selection of future tracks and albums, including downloadable music"
  • 41 venues
  • real-life arenas famous for hosting a history of rock
  • "Complete list of venues:" (I don't get how this adds to 41)     * Boston Area, with three confirmed venues: Charles Pub, in Somerville, The Establishment in Cambridge, and Hancock Theatre in Boston
        * New York
        * Chicago
        * L.A.
        * Seattle
        * San Francisco
        * London
        * Paris
        * Amsterdam
        * Berlin
        * Stockholm
        * Rome
        * Tokyo
        * Sydney
        * Reykjavik
        * Rio de Janeiro
        * Moscow
.
Any fellow Bostonians know if the Charles Pub and The Establishment are real places?  If not, I wonder if they're imitations of Orleans in Somerville and River Gods in Cambridge, since both places have been hosting regular Guitar Hero nights.

That song list really does nothing for me.  I have the game pre-ordered for the drumming experience, but there's still time for me to eject.

You mean to tell me they had access to Metallica's whole body of work and they chose something off the black album?

Maybe "The Middle East" in Cambridge?

depends on which sector of Metallica fans you're talking to

The Black album is the one most people are going to identify with Metallica.  Sure, something like "Dyers Eve" would be the bee's knees, but your average Guitar Hero purchaser is going to see that and simply scratch their head like a chimp.

And even if you're a die-hard pre-Black Metallica fan (as I am), how can you not like "Enter Sandman"?  It may have marked the end of the "real" Metallica, but it's still a kickass song.

Master of Puppets would have been a perfect song.  Or Trapped Under Ice..., or possibly the best guitar lick they ever wrote: Four Horsemen?  I've never heard of half of the songs on GH2 or GH1 but I can still jam to the good songs.

If we're just talking black album, why not Unforgiven the biggest song on the disk?  It has that INCREDIBLE guitar solo.  Enter Sandman is a C list Metallica song at best.

I do agree with you there, Unforgiven is better than Enter Sandman... and yeah the solo in Unforgiven is awesome

Trapped Under Ice sucks though, it's the worst Metallica song ranging from the albums Ride the Lighting through Justice

Good points - except maybe Trapped Under Ice (ick...)  Unforgiven is a fine song, but if you're going to to Metallica, you gotta do something that makes you pump your fist in the air - something Unforgiven doesn't exactly inspire, no matter how good the solo.  It's too mid-tempo, or something.

Bottom line - Sandman is by far their best known song, and the obvious choice.  It's where the smart money goes.  They can always add more obscure songs later on via download.

I'd say "Of Wolf and Man" would be a good one if you had only the black album to choose from, or "The God That Failed" it really showcases the bass at the start then you could have nice harmony trade offs with the guitar work at the start, and the drums are nice and agressive. But the song is to repeative, much like all the "catchy-radio friendly" black album songs.

I still like Puppets the best, I just love playing through that album on real guitar.

But hey whatever I'm suprised they got Metallica on board.

just buy GHIII and enjoy the chance to play 'One'...

I say go buy a real guitar and learn it haha, that tapping solo, you cant replicate the feeling you get on a plastic guitar with 4 fret buttons haha.

Enter Sandman was the song that got me into Metallica, and the Black album was my first exposure to them so the fact that they changed their style didn't really have an impact on me.  I think I only ended up getting 4 of their albums (Black, Load, ReLoaded and Garage Inc) but I've always meant to delve further into their backlog.

Yeah, you've basically got a "worst of" compilation with those four albums.

While I hate the insufferable cockbags Metallica have become, there's not many metal albums that can compare to either Master of Puppets or ...and Justice for All (feel free to insert Ride the Lightning or Kill 'em All in place of ...Justice, depending on your personal preference).

The awesomeness of One aside, And Justice For All came off kind of monotonous with songs going way longer than they needed to be.  Probably my least favorite of their first five albums.  I remember seeing them in concert for the Black album tour and One was the only song from the album they played in it's entirety with the rest subjected to an extended medley.  It was kind of like the songs were too boring for even them to play all the way through.
