I should make an unboxing video- opening this thing up is so epic.  So many parts and boxes and sub boxes.

Thus far I have opened the guitar- and it is beautiful.  So beautiful.

The buttons are big.  I like big butt-ons and I cannot lie.

Your impressions suck.  So far they're like buying a child a new toy and watching them instead play with the box it came in.  We all know what the stuff looks like.  How does it play?

So far your impressions threads include smelling a manual and visually caressing game peripherals.  I hope GamingTrend isn't paying you for your review "work".

I saw a few of these at Gamestop this afternoon.

My impressions are that the box is really big.

Would someone please for the love of God tell me how you can get the XBOX Live Headset to work as a mic? I've scoured the web and read the manual to the game (where it mentions it works) and can't figure out how to make it register.

After about 4 songs, I'm gonna say that so far this game is taking me back to the joy that I had when I unboxed and played the original Guitar Hero for the first time.  icon_biggrin

The guitar controller for this game is superior in every way: heft, button pressure required, two sets of frets, the strum bar doesn't click, the whammy bar and even the buttons to control as a regular controller are better.

My whole reason for buying the game was the drums and I've not even touched them yet.

Things I love:

1. Big rock ending. What a hoot. It brought a smile to the face about the same as the one I got playing More Than A Feeling for the first time.
2. The second set of frets. Though I usually miss 4 notes moving my hands into position, I love the way solos work.
3. Star rating builds as you play: I love that. You know exactly how you're doing.
4. Character Creation is appropriately robust: Mass Effect it's not, but it's quite good.
5. The sound. For whatever reason GH2 sounded like butt coming out of my 5.1. This game sounds brilliant.
6. The animations: Very strong and on the par of what you expect given history with GH.
7. I like how the notes are presented. Not majorly different than GH, but somehow better
8. You can earn more 'energy' (starpower) even if you're in the middle of using it.

Things that are questionable:

1. It hasn't explained how to use the sound effect switch even though I've done all the tutorials. Don't know what the deal is with that
2.  I'm not used to the button press weight yet- probably because it's a new controller- but the buttons aren't loose enough to move through the notes as quickly as I'm used to in GH

Things that I can't stand:
1. That I should be playing Mass Effect right now but don't want to  eek

A few random thoughts after finishing most of the solo drum campaign on Medium and a couple tiers of both guitar and vocals:

-  I have drummed until I can drum no more.  My arms and ankle are actually sore from banging on those things all day.  But man, was it fun!  There has never been a gaming moment quite like pounding out Enter Sandman while the crowd sings along.

-  Some of the drum note charts (on Medium) are tough to get used to.  In the spirit of making the songs "easier", they take out bass kicks that you know are in there.  I always lose my multiplier when I get in a groove and start to play naturally.  Forces a lot more concentration than I'm used to while drumming.

-  I could do without ever hearing Maps or that Coheed & Cambria shit again.

-  Tried to get in some online games, but got nothing.  Just as with GH III, I assume things will be wonky for a couple weeks.

-  Vocals are fun, but I feel like an idiot singing along by myself on my couch.  Creep is a blast to sing.

-  Neversoft needs to take some lessons from Harmonix on how to design both graphics and a user interface.  Everything about RB is easy to find, intuitive, and looks great.  The only glitch I've found is that my awesome run through Hand That Feeds on guitar isn't showing up on the leaderboards.

-  Bummed that my guitar is broken, as I really like the feel of this one.  Unfortunately, my tilt sensor doesn't work so I'll have to get with EA and see what they can do.  Their support website is down, so we'll see what happens.  This is probably my bad karma shot for "renting" a 360 from Best Buy until mine gets fixed.

-  Apparently, Gold Stars don't mean the same in Rock Band as they do in GH.  I got 100% on the Garbage song, but didn't get a gold star.  Got 99% on Hand That Feeds (missed one note   icon_evil ), but got Gold Stars.  Not sure what the significance is.

More to come later...

You can switch effects during solos to add different sounds.  Doesn't add anything to your point total, but is fun to play around with.

How much space does the drum kit take up?  Does it collapse into a manageable form or do you have to take it completely apart for storage?  I'm thinking of buying the game and waiting for the drum kit to become available, tackling the guitar/bass solo career (and vocal if someone can get the headset mic working).  If the drums are just unmanagable, though, I'm not going to bother, probably.

I'm also wondering how entertaining this'll be single player-wise.  My wife doesn't seem interested, and I don't think I can convince Jade Raymond to come play with me.

According to the reviews, the whole World Tour mode (or whatever it's called) where you create your character and travel around the world playing different venues and accumulating fans is only available if you have at least 2 players.  Otherwise, you just get the standard Guitar Hero-style tracklists.

Has there ever been any rationale behind this?  The World Tour thing sounds great to me even just as a guitarist so I'm pretty bummed that it isn't an option to us solo-only gamers.

My 18 month old future rocker. He knew what those sticks were for before I could show him.

===

I only had time to play a few songs on the drums. passed my first song on my medium, failed the second FAST. Dropped down to easy to try to get into it and am having a LOT of fun with easy. It seems you have to hit the drums a bit harder than I would like, especially since I like to play while my son is napping. But drumming feels so much more real than the guitar stuff, at least in GH games.

Just cracked it open and did a few drum and guitar songs.

Like Gratch said, seems like there were some beats mising on medium. Almost felt un-natural at times, but still fun.

I don't like the guitar at all. Half a song in, I switched to the GH3 guitar and did MUCH better.

Anyone else having a problem transitioning from the GH guitar to the RB one?

It takes some time to get used to the new guitar, but I wound up liking it better.  Since the buttons are all flush, slides are much easier to accomplish.  The strum bar has a different feel, but it's much easier to grab during those "strum like crazy" speed sections.

I came home from chorus rehearsal tonight to find that my GF, who is very vocal about not singing, had been doing the solo vocal campaign for two hours.  We just spent the last hour and a half doing Band World Tour with her on vocals and me on drums.  She doesn't like many games, and it's even rarer that she turns on a game to play by herself, so this is fairly impressive.  I can't wait until we have our next Rock Band get-together.

Speaking of which, I have to download the new tracks.

I am as well.  I'm hear something rattling around inside it, which is not a good sign.  The big thing I noticed with it is when a bunch of notes come in a row really fast, I'm missing waaaay too many with it.  It feels like it's not detecting the strumming as well as it should.  The strum bar is really really loose as well. Any one else noticing this?

In the meantime I'm using the GH3 controller though and liking it alot better smile

Dammit.

Got through about 45 seconds of my first song with my fiancee before she complained the visuals were making her nauseas.  She never had this problem with GH, and it's something normally she only deals with in FPS games (she's even played through Splinter Cell just fine).

Pretty much ruins any hope I had of enjoying the game, since it's not really a solo venture and I'm out of town too much to waste weekend time with people other than her.

Any advice?

Mrs. Gratch - who had previously (grudgingly) agreed to give singing a shot - changed her mind and refuses to even try it.  Looks like I'll be doing it all solo until they open up the online World Tour. frown

The drums are both stupid fun and stupid hard.  If I know the song (Weezer), I do OK.  If I don't know the song very well (Creep), I get UTTERLY DESTROYED.

It's gonna take some practice.

The World Tour mode is awesome.  The girlfriend got into it and we made a band... been a great time so far.

I agree re: drums. You have to smack em to get the note to register. I guess that's a part of rocking.

Also, I'm wondering if some of the note detection is off as I know I'm hitting the beat yet I still get a missed noted.

Still all aces though!

PS. I can't sing worth a hoot.
