I never played the original game but have certainly heard all the praise for it.  Most of the reviews for the EX version seem to be from the perspective of past players who seem disappointed with the lack of co-op play, and odd save routine.

For someone who's never played the game, and for whom co-op play is a non-issue, is this game worth picking up?  I used to love Double Dragon and Golden Axe back in the day, and I assume this is essentially much the same, with some lite RPG item/leveling up tossed in for good measure?

If you liked Double Dragon and Golden Axe I would say it isn't a bad game.  The game itself isn't too terribly deep, but neither were the two you referenced.  It's still a fun game, with plenty of quirky atmosphere, and the minor RPG/item elements are interesting.

If you are looking for Double Dragon with super deformed characters you will enjoy it.  Make sure to check out the review and accompanying screenshots here.

At the end of the day it's still a classic, and it became one for a reason.  You can't mention this game without saying "BARF!"  If you play it you'll understand

Yeah, RCR is a great old-school beat-em-up in my mind, just like the classics you mentioned (but far more fun). The fact that it doesn't have multiplayer is a crime, but you said that you wouldn't mind that feature.

BARF!
