the previous 3 Gothic games didn't have it so it wouldn't surprise me if this one didn't either.

There is no character creation in Gothic/Risen. All character customization is done through training by using XP.

Right. Don't have the game from Steam but downloaded the manual from it. Here's a blurb from the FAQ section.

Quote
How can I set my character class?
Unlike many other role-playing games, you don’t have to already set the class of your
hero before the beginning of the game. Over the course of Chapter 1 you will first have
the option of aligning yourself with one of three fractions (Bandits, Mages, Inquisition).
Each of these fractions has different abilities at their disposal, which are not available to
the others or only available in limited measures. Mages for example inherently employ
powerful magic, whereas the Inquisition’s warriors of the Order chiefl y resort to scrolls
and staff weapons; bandits on the other hand are more “hatchet men” and fight with
swords and axes, without magical frills.

And for XP or Learning Points and attributes:

Quote
Levelling
For every opponent that you vanquish, and every task that you successfully
complete, you receive experience. As soon as you have gathered a certain
amount of experience, you will move up to the next highest level, which
means that your maximum life energy automatically increases. In addition,
every time you level you are given a certain amount of learning points,
which you can then invest in the purchase or upgrade of your attributes
and skills.

Quote
In the course of the game you will come across bookstands,
potions, herbs and tablets, which allow your attributes and skills to
increase. While bookstands and tablets permanently increase your wisdom,
the ogre root for example positively affects your strength. Since trainers can
only ever increase your attributes and skills (in “exchange” for learning
points) up to a certain extent, it is certainly recommended to first resort to
potions and herbs when nobody can teach you anything more!

Seen any bugs or issues so far? What little I've read on it shows that it's surprisingly bug free for once.

the demo is amazing smooth and loads quickly.  I think they secretly replaced the Piranha Bytes team with Folgers Crystals.

I went ahead and purchased on Steam.  The demo was pretty good and I did like the graphics.  The combat also seems pretty deep, I made a mistake by not looking at the control list at first and a bird stalked and killed me because I didn't know how to get into attack mode.  You can customize the keys which from what I  remember of Gothic they were preset and pretty horrible and that's one of the reason I never played much of it.  The framerate was great except a slight pause when autosaving.

I just put mine in too.  apparently Steam now saves your credit card info; I'm not sure I like that....

[edit]easy enough to get rid of though.  just go to 'my account' via the stores main page and the option to remove it is right there.

after some thought about the demo I mentioned this in the cosole thread:

in the PC demo I did get a pretty good sense of deja vu when the game starts with you crawling out of the water, then came across the second NPC you encounter (Jan I think), where he says something akin to 'we live freely at our camp in the swamp' (wonder if they're worshipping anything this time), decribes the harbor town with the paladinsinquisition, the mages and then proceeds to whip out a doobie after I'm done talking with him.  I know I'm going to like the game, but damn, if feels like they're restarting the Gothic series all over again.

Time for me to admit my 3.5 year old PC just doesn't cut it for new games any more. Risen demo is a slide show for me. Even if I downgrade to 800x600 and everything turned to low/off, the framerate is in the teens. I go to look at the requirements, and my 7800 doesn't even make the minimum cut. Ouch. frown

A couple of things: The 360 port was done by an outside company and they did a pretty poor job that the PB crew is very unhappy about. The Eurogamer review has been dissected pretty well on QT3 and has so many proven inaccuracies that it seems pretty well useless.

Yeah I'd avoid the 360 version if you can.  Risen is a PC RPG at heart even if someone tried to shoddily port it.  It's kind of funny to see these review sites slamming Risen while they frothed over Oblivion and Fallout 3.  If Risen is like Gothic 1 and 2 (which sounds exactly like it is) I'd rather play Risen a thousand times than play either of the other two once.  I seriously hope the future of third-person action RPG's lies in the direction of Gothic/Risen/Witcher and not Oblivion/Fallout 3.

If it hadn't been for the ridiculous loading times and stupid stun lock thing when fighting animals, Gothic 3 would probably have been my favourite RPG of all time.

I got my physical copy, which was a bad choice. Seems I am having an issue with the Tages DRM, as I keep getting an "Insert Original Risen DVD" error whenever I try to run it. I hope it is Tages, because it is making some funny sounds, but the issue seems to be semi-common with people running on Vista 32-bit (at least from the forum, there are about 6-7 people having the same issue).

So, my advice is get the digital download copy... I should have!

Bael

have you tried running the risen.exe as an administrator (right click on it and choose that from the drop down menu)?  I had the same trouble with Gothic 3 and that's how I solved it (I think, I may have just ended up finding a cracked exe file).

the one thing I can't figure out how to change is the quick save/quick load keys.  I want to remap quick save to F5 because I've already accidentally hit F8 once and lost some progress due to it being the quick load key.

OK, I ran into my first BS moment.  it's at a farm towards the beginning, where you can run into a 'Warrior of the Order'.  anyways, I know I could take this guy down if they didn't make him invincible.  I'll hit him 2 or 3 times, manage to block/dodge his attack, then hit again a few times but he takes no damage whatsoever.

I also thought I was doing pretty good in combat, but once you get past the opening part things get a lot more interesting.  suddenly those 'hungry wolves' aren't quite as easy as they were near the beach  icon_wink

Grrr... well, running as admin didn't help nor did ripping the DVD as an ISO and mounting it to run it virtually. So now I wait until they patch up the Tages DRM to run with whatever it is finding on several people's systems that it doesn't like. I would think the DVD was incompatible with my system, but it installs fine and ripped fine. So it's the Tages...

I could succumb to getting the torrent version, which sadly works and doesn't treat its users like pirates (unlike the physical retail version). I would return to Amazon, but they only give 50% refunds for opened software. So I'm stuck until the patch!

I'm assuming you aren't talking about the times he's blocking.

He may be really high level, and your piddly weapon may not be doing much damage to him.  I know he's not invincible because I put a hurting on him lol...

Trust me, you can beat up anyone you want in the game.  It's just that there are people out there a lot stronger than you...especially at first.  Run into an Ogre, and you'll feel the same way...but give it some levels, and better weapons, and you'll see...

That really sucks Bael.  Luckily my Vista 32 system is handling the disk version I bought without many problems (though my DVD drive is making weird noises at times but I've been wondering about it lately anyway).  Hopefully they will fix the issue fast, as bugs related to DRM are unforgiveable.

The only thing I've figured out how to drop is the torches.  If you equip your weapon, you automatically drop them.  Apparently they are single use only torches.  icon_lol

The rest of the stuff I don't need I just trade away.  Though there is no indicator of it on the trade screens, other people appear to have unlimited cash so you can just cash out what you don't need.

Yah, I'm getting the impression that's what you're meant to do since there doesn't seem to be any notion of encumbrance that I've seen so far with your Infinite Knapsack. Anything you don't want you sell off to some merchant.

Agreed, as weird as it may seem. Everybody, no matter how much they complain to you about how poor they are, has unlimited funds to take your crap you find/steal/whatever. My favorite thing? Stealing something from a merchant and selling it right back to them. biggrin

Other oddities: I once pulled a monster that was too over my head back to a NPC nearby, and he helped me beat the daylights out of it. During the fight though, I hit him, and once the mob was down he attacked me. I defended myself, looted the items he had (including something I gave to him for money), and about a minute later he picked himself back up again and acted as if nothing had happened. He even allowed me to turn in the item again for even more money.

Talk about some weird amnesia or something.

I've played about an hour and this game is pretty tough.  I haven't quite got the timing down on counters yet but hope to get there soon.  I died to a pig and after 3 reloads it put up a hint if an enemy is too tough
come back later, so I left the pig for later.  I like the graphics and sound and it plays pretty well on my system without much slowdown.  There is some pretty funny dialog, just run into someone who's drunk and you'll know what I mean.

One tip for combat I've seen - don't just mash the attack button when fighting. If you time it right, you'll swing MUCH faster as a result. Additionally, for early on, notice the names of the mobs - things like Hungry Wolf you'll be able to take on, but Wolf will kick your rear.

so far I've only ran into one bug:  there's a house in Harortown that, if I go through the second floor entrance, I'm more likely to be warped to the rooftop then being able to enter the room.  luckily I don't see any reason to go into that particular room anymore.

I had that bug too. More alarmingly, it returned for the main quest in chapter 2, forcing me through the roof when I tried to enter a very important doorway. I don't understand why this hasn't been mentioned anywhere else that I can find on the Internet. I was starting to fear that I wouldn't be able to proceed until I transformed into a Nautilus, which let me pass through.

Having said that, I haven't actually found many bugs in this game. It's been the two doorways as well as a monster that got stuck in terrain and some bizarre movements when falling down from somewhere. Minor stuff, except the doorway thing.

One tip for combat I've seen - don't just mash the attack button when fighting. If you time it right, you'll swing MUCH faster as a result. Additionally, for early on, notice the names of the mobs - things like Hungry Wolf you'll be able to take on, but Wolf will kick your rear.

This sounds a lot like Gothic 1--I may have to get it later.

It may be a bit premature to say this without finishing it, but Risen may be the best CRPG I have ever played. I like the British tough guy humor in the dialog (almost reminds me of the movie Snatch). I like the long drawn out melee battles with all the positioning, blocking, parrying, etc. I like that I got my ass handed to me by anything I tried to fight for the first 5 hours of playing. The world has been utterly believable in almost every detail. No loads between areas. Great character advancement with a big variety of things to learn. I like all the traps, secrets, and puzzles in the dungeons. Other than the cringe-worthy jump animation I can't think of anything I don't like about Risen.

Ultima Underworld, Gothic, and Arx Fatalis were my favorites before, but this has topped all of them so far. Unless something goes horribly wrong in the second half of the game, I may have found a new favorite CRPG.
