Just started playing this thanks to the Steam sale, this is an amazing game - just played an hour or so but i'm going to reroll now i'm understanding the mechanics better. At the moment i'm thinking how did this game score so low in the reviews but maybe it will become clear as I get into the game. But huge thumbs up from here.

GoG also carries it fwiw ($6.99):
http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/evil_genius

I enjoyed the demo at the time it released, but I think the game was kinda tough to categorize and didn't quite find an audience. At the time I tended to refer to it as a cute Dungeon Keeper, but it's quite a bit different really.

May get it. Liked the demo. I was worried it would become chaotic later in stages. Like being rushed to do the orders you get and such. I dont do well when overwhelmed with orders and a timer.

EDIT: NM I couldn't resist at that price for more than a few moment. MINE.

When I tried the demo a year or so ago I got stuck fairly early on and it died with that. This time I haven't hit that and the instruction in the main game is very clear - some of the best tutorial's i've come across. I love the whole feel of the game. Whether it will keep me going past 20 hours is debatable but that's not bad value for 2$ - that's not saying I don't think it has legs I can just see at this point it may not have, but the whole style has to be tried its a great game that has not aged badly at all.

I highly suggest the fan patch that fixes a few issues and increases the number of henchmen you can have.   About half way through the game (mandatory) missions start requiring increasing numbers of henchmen and you will find yourself just waiting for countdown timers to end.  Nothing is as frustrating as needing to retrain minions AFTER your current ones die because you can only have a set number at a time.

Also, a bit of a spoiler but don't worry if your first base isn't perfect.  You eventually get to move to a larger island.

Well so far i'm on my 3rd rebuild, first was just a test, second was meant to be the one but I ran out of money and the third is hopefully the one which will take me onto ruling the world smile I've built a whole load of lockers (another aspect I hadn't appreciated) so hopefully the henchmen side should be better.

Really enjoying the game - recommend anyone on the fence with this one grab from steam well worth the price

For anyone interested.
The extra 50 minion cap really does make the game more enjoyable once missions start requiring 10+ minions to finish.

Unofficial Patch
An unofficial patch put together by forum member "walking fishy" which should please a few frustrated players...
This patch, which I should again remind you is totally unofficial, is a neat little collection of fixes and updates designed for the US release of the game. You can download it directly from this site here, but I should warn you that installing this patch is likely to mean there will be difficulties in installing any further official patches (which could force you to do a clean install).
With that in mind, the following fixes are in this (self installing) patch:

Fixed the hanchmen stats, the times for acts of infamy are reduced like they should be, as are the heat ratings.
Population is now 150, instead of 100.
Can build all building in the hotel hub and hotel wings.
Can build hotel doors any where, they are cheaper than normal doors but weaker.
Sentry guns can be built inside as well as out.
Hotel casino, lounge and lobby can now be built inside the base.
The loot item Persian rug can now be walked on.
All gun cabinates can now be built in the barracks.
Removed the annoying BEEP BEEP sound on the control room.
Monkey cage (oliver, from an act of infamy should now be researchable).
Prisioners will live longer in the cell.
Most into movies skipped.
Hiding time on world dominition map is now 10mins.
Only sentry guns can be built in building, not disgiused ones.
Freaks shouldnt set traps off now, or at least not as much.
All loot items should carry over to the second island.
Totem pool is only transferable once complete, since it cant be put together on second island.
Fire Extinguisher placable in the hotel.
BodyGuard is now useful.
Security Cameras and speakers can be built in Hotel.

Im on my first map. Ive just gotten to where i kidnap the maid. I think I may start over also. Im out of money and theres lots of wasted space in my base. I am still learning to make hallways and rooms. My rooms seem too small and my hallways are taking up a lot of space I could use better.

As for money i must be doing something wrong. I have minions in 3 countries but they dont seem to get much cash. Also I built a hotel thinking that would bring imn cash but it drained my storeroom instead.

I would leave the hotel for the moment, I also think that the hotel is more a distraction at the start - could be wrong but the notes don't refer to it being a money maker. Also get lockers -lots of them they raise the minion cap.

I'll have a ponder on that patch

If I remember correctly, the hotels don't make you money - they exist to distract the tourists and keep your heat level down.  I don't remember if they make any money at all.

That patch looks good, but I noticed "Most into movies skipped" (sic)

Why do many people hate the movies in games?  I mean sure, if you've seen them a million times, fine - hit <esc> and move on.  But why take them out?

2 bucks at Steam?! I'll have to pick it up! This is one which I wanted to play for a long while, but then it dissappeared from store shelves.. and the PC 'bargain bin' quickly dissappeared too. I always wondered if it would resurface online. I'm a big fan of the 'Dungeon Keeper' style of strategy/sim gaming and always wanted to try out this one. Looks like a download is in order!

I picked it up to play for the first time this week as well. I've only gotten through the first few minutes after the tutorial, but the feel is pretty good so far. I just wish it supported higher rez. It seems to max at 1600x1200 and my monitor prefers 1920x1200 (or 1280?). Tongue

I found a widescreen fix but it didn't seem to work.

Why do many people hate the movies in games?  I mean sure, if you've seen them a million times, fine - hit <esc> and move on.  But why take them out?

"BRIBED BY INTEL PROCESSORS!"
"NVIDIA PAID US TO SHOW THEIR LOGO!"
"MADE BY THIS DEVELOPER!"
"PUBLISHED BY THESE GUYS!"
"SOME RANDOM POINTLESS VIDEO HERE!"

That is why I hate all the startup movies on most games. Yeah, they can be skipped (most of the time), but do they really need to show them in the first place? Once (at best) is enough.

The game is one of the cleverest i've ever played. I'm now on my 3rd or 4th reroll - I loose count smile But I love the touches from when you order something your minions have to go get the gold to buy the item to then get the item to then place the item.

If I had one criticism it could just have done with a speed slider - that could have detracted from the atmosphere but it's the only issue I have.

I found myself looking for the speed slider in the early parts.

I fired up the game last night, and I've put about 4 hours into the game so far. Neat game! I got that good ole 'Dungeon Keeper' feeling while building my first island evil lair complex last night. I think I built my rooms to small this first time around, but I'll improve on my designs. Yes, it's hard to get those minions--you have build lockers in the barracks to get more minions and my current barracks is too small (same mechanic as DK!).

Game looks great on my rig: Athlon 5000 dual core, 4GB Ram, Geforce 9800 w/ 21 inch widescreen monitor. Not sure what people mean about a 'widescreen patch'. The game stretches on my ws monitor just fine.

I'm learning my way around the world map/domination thingie. My complaint about that is that there's lag from the time you assign your minions to missions and the time they get there. That's a bit annoying.

So far, so good. Best 2 bucks I've spent on a game!

I keep forgetting to fire this one up.  Told myself I wasn't going to start it until I finished Prey, which I wrapped up over the weekend.  Haven't gotten around to giving this a shot yet, maybe tonight.
