been getting more and more cheesed off with the video game magazines i buy...i get 3 magazines,i wont name them but they have started to get pretty lame IMO,
e.g 1 magazine had a preview of the new WWF game which was 7 pages long and the game isnt due until Xmas, and in the same magazine they had a review for battlefield bad company which was 3 paragraphs long/half a page...two sentances for the single player!!!

so,i think its best for me to look upon t'internet(as we up north of England say it)for my reviews...
1)-it will save me money as those magazines are no longer cheap...even if i do go for the ones that dont hold a disc
2)-the reviews will be out in time for when the game is due,not when the game has been out for two weeks
3)-i wont be tempted to read it in the bath and fall asleep and get it wet

i am thinking of the likes of IGN or Gamespot...gamespot i have heard are not that great,IGN i have just been on there and it was so-so

so what sites do you go on to get your reviews?

i am for 360 mainly..but i am also interested in the PS3 and the Wii

thanks

Actually, I just Google "name of game" and "review" so I can get a lot of input, especially if I'm considering plunking down $60 for a new game.  I'll usually add search terms like "gameplay," "camera," "difficulty," or  "genre." For those expensive games, I do a lot of research, starting here, then on to teh Google.

Of course, that's partly because you have to surf a lot of results to find out if the game has a deal-breaker, and I'm getting so specific about my games that I really have to search hard (or when lazy, ask everyone here!)  Things that wouldn't bother other people, I now have to really think about before purchase - ie, camera control, savepoints, etc.

I just remembered that I emailed you and told you I bought Lost Odyssey on an impulse buy.  It was on sale!  So my discerning tastes sometimes get triggered for no good reason.  If a sale game sucks, it still sucks, lol, though I know Lost Odyssey won't stink, it remains to be seen if it will be playable (for me.) retard

Wow, that brings back memories!  I didn't exactly kick ass, though, but thanks for the complement!  Level 62 Paladin in a year and a half or so, is more like gently tapping someone's ass, lol.  icon_eek

When I run these searches, I invariably end up with at least one Wiki site, but often they are specific to the game itself, not just Wikipedia - you know like FFXII-Wiki pages.  I also get GameSpot, GameFaqs, and probably at least  6or 8 other recognizable sites.  One rule for certain though - I always start here first, either in Reviews or on an Impressions thread search.  This is really the only place I'm confident in not steering me wrong.  When I make decisions - decisions, not impulse buys, lol - from info from other sites, I make sure that everyone is saying, mostly, the same thing as everyone else.  Otherwise, I don't trust it.

On a game without a lot of info already out there, if there isn't any here either, then I go to GameFaqs and go to Boards, and read as much as I can about where people are getting stuck and why.  I still get two magazines too, though I tend to just have that info floating in the back of my mind somewhere.  Sometimes though, I'll look through my saved mags to see what they said about a game that was new 5 months ago.  Currently, I get Official XBox Magazine and Electronic Gaming Monthly; I dropped the Playstation mag since I play far more XBox and Nintendo games than Playstation, and I don't have a PS3, so what's the point?  icon_biggrin

Oh, and one more site I often check is GameStop (still says EB on my bookmark bar) - you can check prices and read their reviews and often other players' reviews.  But I still don't base most of my purchases on any single site, other than GT, but more like 5 or even 10 sites if I'm having trouble making up my mind.

I like metacritic if you are willing to take the time to compare the reviews to get a feeling of the big picture.

Only when the exclamation point emphasizes the crapiness of Spectral Force 3.

For a quick glance, I've always found Gamespot pretty reliable. Though for most purchase decisions, I'd definitely browse Metacritic and/or Gamerankings. IGN I try to steer clear of, as they've always seemed inconsistent. That and their advertisements are darned annoying. But I guess Gamespot suffers from that these days, too. I suppose I'm just fond of them because I've been using them every since I first got the internet, and have found their reviews to be largely reasonable over the years.
