The selected levels I played were very linear and seemed to follow the same formula: shoot through some pretty landscapes, buildings, etc, find the boss and dispatch it. This isn't to say this process wasn't entertaining for a few missions, but if this is the format of most of them, I can only imagine the gameplay will get old. The bosses I encountered were nothing more than bullet sponges. I simply circled around them shooting and praying I didn't run out of ammo. While one of them did shoot some blinding goo at me, I didn't find it necessary to come up with a strategy to dodge it and simply just kept firing blindly. Overall, I was unimpressed with the enemy AI. I would often find myself unintentionally sneaking up behind enemies in cover who wouldn't shoot at me (or even turn to look at me, for that matter) even as I stood over them. The AI for the raving ghouls, er "mutants" in the game doesn't perform much better, as all they do is run mindlessly at the player.

It does look great, and it reminds me of a bit of Fallout with a serving of Borderlands - spiced with a healthy dash of Riddick.  Please don't tell me this game is coming out anytime between Avatar Legends and Skyrim!  Oh well, eating and sleeping are highly overrated...

hard to believe this is only now just a week from release.  on the plus side I only paid about 7 bucks for it (figuring the cost of 160 bucks for the Quakecon pack deal with pre-ordering this and Skyrim got me at least 24 games I didn't have but wanted) so if it sucks I'm not out that much

Talking to a guy in the elevator, they cut the console version two weeks ago.  They have up to release date to complete the PC version.  Enjoy the Day 1 patch.

I haven't bought or played a game in about 5 months. This is probably the only one I'm looking forward to this year other than Torchlight 2.

this game may push me to upgrade my video cards.  I've been looking and debating, but I figure I'll wait until Rage hits and decide if my dual 5870's are good enough or if they need to be cut.  so far they've been on the edge of being worthy, but both I have a feeling this and Skyrim will put them out to pasture (which is my backup PC).

Yeah, they got the engine to run on an iPhone so it scales quite nicely, I just want all the shiney possible.  I'm debating betweeen 2 2 gig vid cards or 2 3 gig vid cards- common sense is currently prevailing with the 2 gig club.

there might not be any advance PC copies:

(Worth noting: Bethesda tell us that we won’t be getting any early access to the PC version of the game, so we can’t review it before it comes out, so we can’t tell you whether or not to pre-order! Ha.)

new gameplay video released today...Rage - Jackal Canyon

the more gameplay i see, the more awesome this game looks.  the amount of variety in weapons, environments, and action looks to go beyond just about anything we've seen from id in the past, and i'm very optimistic that Rage is going to be an absolute blast to play.  unfortunately, i still haven't made up my mind about the platform on which i'll be experiencing this game.  i have a PC that should run the game very well and really make the best of the amazing graphics, but there's also something to be said for playing it on a 55" screen with high-end 5.1 audio system.  at this point, i'm waiting for reviews and graphics comparisons before choosing my platform...

From what the journalist-types over at QT3 have said, the review embargo for Rage ends at midnight Monday, when the game is released.

I pre-ordered Friday night, and got an error message on pre-load "The Steam serves are currently too busy to handle any more preloads of RAGE.  Please try again in a few hours."

I have tried periodically off-and-on for the last 24 hours, and get same error message (as of 20:30 edt).
Reading Steam forums, seems to be common issue.

Someone playing on the PS3 has posted the first hour or so of the game on YouTube in 20 minute sections.  Spoilery to be sure since it starts from the beginning, but it also gives a very good idea of gameplay.

Those PS3 gameplay videos have made a couple things very clear for me...

#1 - The gameplay looks awesome and I can't wait for next week.

#2 - There is absolutely no way that I will be playing this on the PS3.  It looks like the game runs smoothly, but the textures are surprisingly low quality...even after you see the higher-res textures load and pop into view.

I've been on the fence about which platform to choose for this game, unsure of whether I will go with the PC or a console version.  After seeing those videos, the PS3 is definitely out, and I won't be touching the 360 version either unless I hear that the texture quality is better and you don't see textures loading all the time.

1. PS3 and 360 are pretty close when both have hard drive installs.  The 360 is theoreticallly better because you can do a full install, but people who've claimed to have seen both say they can't tell the difference.
2. The PC version is not getting super high quality textures at launch, perhaps a few weeks down the road, possibly never.  Modders will possibly be quicker in that regard.
3. The PC version is supposed to be more CPU dependent then videocard dependent.  I've seen some claims that the difference between 512mb cards and larger cards will not be that noticeable until/when the high quality textures are released. 

So take from that what you will but keep in mind that since Bethesda/id apparently decided not to send the PC version out early we won't get release day details on which is the better version or how different video cards handle things.  The fact that the "recommended" specs are so relatively low pretty much reinforces the idea that a super PC won't necessarily lead to a huge improvement in any way out of the box.

I'm confused.   Does this mean the graphics on the consoles are better than the PC, or the other way around?

It means that the graphics in the PC version are still better, but not as drastic of a difference as it could be with super high quality textures.

PC users still get a lot of benefits, as posted a few posts up, with the only thing really not showing as much difference is the textures.

One nice thing with Rage I've seen in videos is you can tell they're putting the megatexture tech to good use. You're not seeing many instances of repeating textures.
