IGN has once again rushed to the forefront by being the first to review Quake 4. The game got a dissapointing 8.2, and they concluded that the single player was fun but uninspired, and that the multi had too few maps and was not really much of a step up from Quake 3. The closing paragraph: It's a curious direction that Quake 4 has taken this time around, with the heavy emphasis on single-player, apparently at the development cost of multiplayer, previously its very selling point. And while the SP production values are certainly expensive-looking and sounding, the actual combat mechanics feel a step behind the evolution of the genre, and not in an intentionally retro way. And it's difficult to pin down why it turned out that way, because Raven Software is known for having its finger on the shooter pulse. One can only speculate. Despite its shortcomings, Quake 4 is a genuinely fun game. It just won't keep you entertained for as long as you expect. It's also in the midst of some stiff competition, notably FEAR and Call of Duty 2 (and even Day of Defeat: Source, for that matter). There's a lot of shiny wrapping, but the gift inside is disappointingly small. If there had been a vehicle-based mode with only one map, I think things could have been much different, because I had a lot of fun with those. It would also be cool to see the weapon mods available in MP in some fashion. On the PC side, at least, there's always the possibility of that being added in, either by Raven or amateur designers. Too bad for the 360 guys that no downloadable content is planned.

LD I believe that's Half-Life 2, or else I haven't seen it.

That's the picture! Is that picture from Quake4 or from Half Life 2?
...and yes, I am very easily amused... especially after an Astros WIN.

LD  That is quake 4 - at least a quake engine game. I will still pick it up even with somewhat disappointing reviews. Heck it isn't like there are so many FPS with SP anymore anyway. Even if I bought all of them released this month that is only 4 games.

I must've been the only person expecting Quake 2 part 2, not Quake 3 with an updated engine.

I must've been the only person expecting Quake 2 part 2, not Quake 3 with an updated engine. No, you're not. I enjoy a good single player game more than a multiplayer one which is what the majority of Quake games have been. It's just that 3 was good and gets all the hype. That said, though, I'm starting to worry that Q4 isn't as good as the others (including the expansions)...

Yeah, I might wait to see wha the 360 version offers, too.
I was convinced this was a day-one title. Oh, well.

Waiting for the price drop on this one as well. I get the sense it'll have a big price drop in a month or two. I enjoyed Quake 2 but never really anticipated the thought of a true sequel. So this is more of a stocking stuffer game.
