Nintendo needs to look at how Sony is handling old games, $10 for an N64 game?  I dont think so.  $8 for Genesis games, no thanks.  PSX games for $5.99?  Sign me up.

Unfortunately this will have no impact on Nintendo's VC strategy. They will continue to be overpriced for the most part.

I'm downloading Crash Bandicoot now and I will let you know how it is when I am done. Oh and it's Hot Shots Golf 2 that is available, not the first one.

Price is great, good move on Sony's part.

Now, if only you didn't have to own both a PS3 to purchase the games and a PSP to play them.

No problem.

One cool thing is you get a full copy of the original manual to look at.  icon_biggrin

Some more pics:

For only $5.99 each, this is a great deal. Nintendo and MS need to *gasp* learn from Sony on how to price retro games. Both of their price systems are absurd.

The Nintendo retro releases come with full manuals available too (as I'm sure you know since you've tried them).

I still think you're exaggerating greatly by calling MS & Nintendo's pricing "absurd" next to Sony's. Higher, yes. Sony's pricing model is far preferable, of course: who wouldn't prefer to pay less? icon_wink

But "absurd"? It's all-or-nothing with you lately, isn't it?

Uhh....those are not the full original manuals on the VC. They are only a couple pages of basic info. They are nothing close to the originals. I can tell you have never played them or you would know that.

Oh and $8 for games like Altered Beast and $5 for Soccer for the NES is ABSURD. Also, $5 for Frogger, Pac-Man and $15 for Street Fighter 2 is ABSURD. I don't know how else to put it. Anyway, please don't try to turn this into another PS3 vs everyone else thread. I just echoed the statements of others that said the same thing. Sony has a better price structure than MS or Nintendo.

Stay calm.

Ah; no, I didn't realize that, and it's a bit of a disappointment to hear. :icon_sad:

I still don't think it's so far off the mark as to be "absurd", but that'll be a difference of opinion I suppose.

And no, trust me; I'm not intending this to be a Sony vs. MS / Nintendo debate. icon_smile You'll note that I've already praised their pricing structure on this; it's a great move. And I seriously mean it when I say that it'd be more awesome if it weren't for the fact you have to own a PS3 to buy them and a PSP to play them. To me, that's absurd. icon_biggrin

However, reading a bit, it sounds like Sony plans on making these playable on the PS3 possibly early next year, so kudos to them for that.

Hetz, when you put the PSX games on the PSP how do they show up when you connect the PSP to your PC?  Just curious as to what kind of files they are.

Oh, I agree with that 100%. It's nuts that you have to own both a PSP and PS3 to do this right now. In all fairness though, they will be making the PS Store available to the PSP sometime next year...so you will be eventually able to buy these on the PSP. I would guess that it will probably happen the same time the PS3 is able to play the PS games without having the PSP.

I don't think $15 for SF2 with full online play and achievements is absurd.  I agree that some of the other MSA titles are too expensive though (Contra, Luminies).
I do commend Sony for the price points.  Too bad you need to have a PS3 AND a PSP to play a PS1 game right now.  That is kind of silly.  Why can't I just download them directly to the PSP?  I know they say that they will make the store available to the PSP "next year."  But as with all things Sony, I'll believe it when I see it.

(edit.  I just saw Hetz's post above.)

So you can only play these on your PSP right now? Huh, that changes the price perspective a lot, well for now at least

Really?

It will only be a month or so until you can play them on the PS3. I don't see how that changes the price perspective at all anyway. The PSP is a great system to play it on and you get to play it on that AND the PS3. You can only play VC games on the Wii. You also can only play Live Arcade games on the 360. I think that makes the PS1 downloads an even better value!  icon_smile

I'm going to go ahead and go on record and predict that any really high profile third party titles like FF7 will be more than $5.99 (love to be wrong though).

My thoughts exactly. I was about to ask when games actually worth playing again were going to come out. Although, considering many high profile games have become greatest hits, the prices may remain low.

Wow can you imagine being able to play FFVII and Chrono Cross on the PSP?? That would be unbelievable.  The PSP would go from having almost no good RPG's to having a ridiculous amount of beautiful looking (for the PSP or DS anyways) RPGs just like that!

I think it's a possible valid arguement that playing some games on a smaller screen might be a problem.  Not only will it have to be squished or cropped to fit in the widescreen format, but reading the text may be a serious problem for RPGs and such.

Not worth dismissing out of hand, but a consideration at the least.

Gaming on the go?  I'm assuming you don't do much portable gaming nor have you really seen the screen of a PSP.  I would love to play PSX games on my PSP... I'm just waiting until I can do so without having a PS3.

Last I heard, Sony was mapping the L2/R2 buttons to the D-pad left/right. Not exactly an elegant solution, but it works.

Syphon Filter used the R2/L2 buttons for some movements - how do they deal with that in the PSP port?

Last I heard, Sony was mapping the L2/R2 buttons to the D-pad left/right. Not exactly an elegant solution, but it works.

Unless you have to hold both at the same time.  I seem to remember a game which needed that but it's been awhile.

Still... $5.99 for a game?  That's an awesome price!

I can't really defend Nintendo's pricing for their VC games, but I can defend the price of XBLA a little by stating that they do add new features to the old games with online play and leaderboards.  With the PSX games, you are only getting the ability to play the game.  So, MS can justify a little price hike.  Unfortunately for the Nintendo fanboy in me, Nintendo can't.  The price will be a little more justifiable if they allow you to send it to the DS in the future, but even then, the price will still be greater than what you can get on Sony's platform for a cheaper price.

And I found out exactly how the PSP emulates the L2/R2 buttons:

Quote
Here are the four configs for controls (universal for every game):

Face Buttons are all the same.

TYPE ONE: Analog stick left and right is L2 & R2, L and R emulate L1 and R1 obviously.
TYPE TWO: L and R on the PSP simulate L2 and R2, with the analog stick left and right emulating L1 and R1. Pressing the stick upwards is L1+R1.
TYPE THREE: L and R = L1 and R1; Analog Stick Up + L=L2, Analog Stick Up + R=R2, Analog Stick Down= L2 + R2
TYPE FOUR: Analog stick emulates digital pad, with the digital pad on the PSP emulating like the analog stick does in Type Two.

And yeah, charging $5.99 for these games is far easier to swallow than Nintendo's prices right now. Too bad I don't own a PS3 to even think about doing this (especially as I'd have to emulate 3.01 as stated in another thread  icon_biggrin ).

I sense another Hetz Rage-Thread building.  Minute by minute refreshes coming until it is locked or he runs off to another forum for a day to let the dust clear.   Tongue

PSP+PS3 to play PS1 games?  I just have to LOL at that one, in a big way.

Exactly why would I want to play ps1 games on a tiny screen when I have big screen tv in the living room and a 30 in tv in my den LOL. Tongue
Gaming on the go?  I'm assuming you don't do much portable gaming nor have you really seen the screen of a PSP.  I would love to play PSX games on my PSP... I'm just waiting until I can do so without having a PS3.

No I don't do any portable gaming but my 2 sons have the Nintendo Ds and a sony psp I tried but the screens are just so small

GatorFavre and Kobra: Stop baiting Hetz and derailing the discussion.

Hetz cut it out with the childish rollyeyes and quit overreacting to every perceived offense which also derails the discussion.

This is getting really old and I think you guys will find our patience has limits.

Dont worry, I am done with it and I apologize for my posts.
