After realizing that I use my Nintendo DS more than any other system I own, I figured it's time to check out the other side of handheld gaming and get a Sony PSP. Any buying advice? I've been poking around a bit, and I see something called a PSP Core System. Costco has one in some sort of gaming pack together with MLB The Show. Is there any other version of the system, something that's not a Core system, like a Deluxe version?

Any recommendations for best PSP games? I like all sorts of games, but tend to gravitate towards RPGs, strategy games, sports, and shooting. Not the biggest fan of platform, arcade type games.

We've got a pretty good thread about the God of War bundle in the Steals and Deals thread:

GOW
UMD: Superbad
Red PSP with Kratos Graphic
Voucher for a downloadable game
Usual cables

199.99 (starting June 3)

If you buy start a new sony card Visa you can 100.00 back if you buy it at Sonystyle or a Sony reseller, bringing your final costs to 100.00+tax.

There's also a madden blue bundle coming out in...September(?)...

Interesting. Thanks.

So there aren't multiple versions of the PSP to choose from, like the PS3, with different memory configurations and stuff? I should just get whatever the latest type is?

Well, like the DS there's a fat and a slim (PSP 2000).

Other than that, AFAIK, they're all the same.

You have to buy memory sticks for it- as there appears to be no onboard memory (or very little).  I just bought a 4gb memstick for 25.00...so it's not a big deal (of course I don't know that I'm getting a PSP at all now thanks to the Walmart/BB PS3 deal  retard).

It's pretty much the bundle that defines which one you want.

Loved the Daxter game my PSp came with. Ive also loved Madden 08, Crisis Cord FF7, and Syphon Filter Dark Mirror. The NBA 08 demo is a blast too. Not finished a game yet of anything though and have barely touched Jeane D'Arc

Not really.  All the new PSPs you can buy are the same hardware they are just painted differently.  You can still buy the old version used.  The old one is often referred to as the "fat" version and the new is called "slim."

To really use many of the PSP functions you will need a large memory stick.  The default stick is too small to hold movies or much music.

If you wish into homebrew and hacking your PSP just do a google search for either of those terms and PSP - and be ready to learn a lot!

Personally you can't go wrong with the God of War bundle.  The PSP looks neat, the game is great and the price is good.

Enjoy they are a lot of fun.

Understand that the gaming horizon for PSP is not real deep.
It's a cool system, but don't expect the variety of titles you see on DS,
either now or going forward. If that doesn't give you pause, then go for it.

in my opinion, the 'PSP/Daxter Pack' is the best option for buying a PSP right now...silver PSP slim, Daxter game, Family Guy UMD, and 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo for $199.  there are a few other bundles at the same price point that come with different games (GoW, Star Wars Battlefront), but both of those lack the memory stick that you'll still need buy so you can save your games (starting at ~$20 for a 1GB stick).  there isn't any built-in memory for saving games on the PSP, so a memory stick is pretty much a requirement, and you'll want at least 1GB if you want to use your PSP as any form of media player.  they're supposed to be releasing a Madden 09 bundle soon that will include a memory stick, but the game and video UMD aren't as good in my opinion.  my suggestion is just to go with the Daxter pack and pick up any other games you want on top of that.  Daxter is a great game, and you'll wind up spending more money with any other bundle anyway.

I'm selling mine.  It's the original PSP, black with the custom firmware that lets you run your games from ISO's.  I also have several UMD games I'll be selling with it and a 4GB memory stick.

Let me know if you're interested...

They can be had much more cheaply than that.

Mem sticks shouldn't even be a consideration in a bundle imo as they're so inexpensive.

Thanks for all the tips.

As much as Daxter looks like a great game, I'm not sure that it's my type of a game. I'm tempted to go with the God of War or the MLB The Show package.

I didn't realize that about the memory sticks. Thanks.

Thanks for the tip on Jeanne D'Arc. That looks perfect. It looks like there are some other great SRPGs for the system too.

So far, I'm thinking of starting with these:

Jeanne D'Arc
Disgaea
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
God of War
MLB The Show '08 (if I can find it cheap)

I think I might like some of these as well:

Football Manager 2008
Valkyrie Profile
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
Hot Shots Golf
WipeEout Pulse/Pure
Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception
Ridge Racer
Syphon Filter series

Warning,
Thanks, but I think I'm going to go with the slim version.

FYI I saw Hot Shots Golf on clearance at Target last week. Since the new one is coming out this week I guess they are trying to get rid of the old one. I'm sure not much has changed from this one to the new one.

The Final Fantasy Tactics game is essentially the same game that was released on the PS1, only with updated cinematics, so if you have already played that game you may want to pass on it.

I do recommend Crisis Core, I wrote a review for it on the main page you can read.

Other than that I don't think you can go wrong with the GoW bundle. Once you actually get the PSP you can go online with your computer and download demos, wallpapers and such. You can also buy Castlevania Symphony of the Night for about $9 on the playstation store. That game is a steal at that price.

The new enhanced battery is a must have. I now charge my PSP only about once a week and I play it pretty much every day for a couple of hours (while commuting to work).

Now that I think of it, that's a lot of Puzzle Quest. biggrin

You can buy the original for mad cheap on the PS Store.  I think it's like $6 and you can put it on your memory stick.

Do the newer systems come with the enhanced battery, or is that something you've got to get separately?

Thanks for all the suggestions, by the way. One nice thing about picking up a system later in its cycle is that you can raid some bargain bins for some great games. I'm making a list of all the suggestions.

Quick question on PSP memory...

When I look at PSP memory sticks for sale on Amazon, they often show a little sleeve for them (like this one), something called a PSP memory adapter. But the cheaper SanDisk version doesn't seem to include that little adapter thingie. Do I need that adapter thingie to use the memory in a PSP?

Nah - that little sleeve adapter thingy is for stuff like Sony Cameras etc.
You do not need it in the PSP.

Very cool, thanks.

Ordering the God of War bundle and a memory stick from Amazon now.

When I was in Japan, I picked up the Japanese versions of these:
Final Fantasy Tactics
Monster Hunter Portable
Monster Hunter Portable 2G
World Neverland
A Majong Game
Jikyo Power Pro Baseball Portable 3
Jeanne D'Arc

PSP arrived yesterday, and I charged it up last night. Surprised how light it is, and how big the screen is (compared to the DS anyway).

I'm wondering, does anyone have any recommendations for screen protectors? I'm afraid I'll scratch this thing up pretty quickly.

Hori screen protectors are the only ones I've tried worth a damn.  Can be hard to come by- Gamestop used to sell them but I haven't seen them there in a while but Amazon sells them.  I recently tried some from Psyclone and they were absolute crap.
