These asshats (person/group responsible for the Sony breach) should be banned from computers and mobile phones forever even if they are minors.  They should also be sentenced to community service every week for life.  As someone who was likely hacked directly because of this breach I have absolutely zero sympathy for any of their excuses.  Not the mention the millions of people whose lost information, will be hacked, have their ID stolen or the billions in lost revenue from the trickle down effects of this.

Do you include Sony employees that were responsible for PSN/SOE?

If you feel incompetence is a criminal act, yes.  I don't, though.  And thankfully, most reasonable human beings don't either.  Almost everything in this world can be hacked if you devote enough time and effort to the process.  Networks evolve because of this.  I'm with Ericb.  These guys are criminal assholes.  The IT team at Sony may have made mistakes, but blaming them is like blaming the homeowner who gets robbed because they forgot to lock a window one night.

just saw this...not very comforting

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/05/13/us-sony-idUSTRE74C70420110513

Sony Corp's computer networks remain vulnerable to attack three weeks after the company learned that it had been victim of one of the biggest data breaches in history, according to an Internet security expert.

The expert found a handful of security flaws in Sony's networks while remotely studying its systems via the Internet to see how difficult it would be to penetrate the electronics giant's systems in the wake of the attacks.

I had one online account that shared a password with my SOE info, and I intentionally hadn't changed it because I was curious if/when something would be compromised.  It happened this morning.

new firmware is out

Quote
We have been working on a new PS3 system software update that requires all PSN users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored. The update (v3.61) is mandatory and is available now.

If using a PS3, your password can only be changed on your own PS3 (or a PS3 on which your PSN account was activated), as an added layer of security. If you have never downloaded any content using your account on the system, an email will be sent to the registered sign-in ID (email address) associated with your account when you first attempt to sign-in to PSN. This e-mail will contain a link that will enable you to change your password. In this email, click on the link and follow the instructions to change your password. Once you have changed your password you can sign-in to your account using your new password.

We strongly recommend that all PSN account holders with PS3s update their systems to prepare for when PlayStation Network is back online. The release of this update is a critical step as we work to make PlayStation Network significantly more secure. Thank you for your continued support and patience.

really?  I saw this on Wiki:

Quote
The U.S. Government classifies Puerto Rico as an independent taxation authority by Federal Law 48 U.S.C. § 734. Puerto Rico residents are required to pay U.S. federal taxes, import/export taxes,[100] federal commodity taxes,[101] social security taxes etc. Individuals working with the Federal Government pay federal income taxes while the rest of the residents are required to pay federal payroll taxes (Social Security[102] and Medicare),[103] as well as Commonwealth of Puerto Rico income taxes. All federal employees,[104] plus those who do business with the federal government,[105] in addition to Puerto Rico-based corporations that intend to send funds to the U.S.,[106] and some others[107] also pay federal income taxes. In 2009, Puerto Rico paid $3.742 billion into the US Treasury.[108]

While I think that the hackers are a bunch of Aholes this analogy does not correlate to Sony's responsibility in this matter.  In the above only the homeowner is affected for their negligence. When you take on people's personal information and promise it to be safe and then fail spectacularly due to what appears to be nothing more than negligence then you have to burden some of the blame.  'Sorry opps' just doesn't work.

Right now its all circumstantial, the evidence that Sony has been negligent. They may very well have been, but saying they are without any proof isn't normally the way we go about things.

The gaming media and others with a grudge are really going at it, though.

There is certainly enough smoke to at least consider the fact Sony was not diligent enough.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/227770/experts_on_psn_hack_sony_could_have_done_more.html

'Their comments follow the congressional testimony of Gene Stafford, a computer security professor at Purdue University, who told lawmakers that Sony used an outdated version of the Apache Web server software, and had no firewall installed. Hackers compromised the PlayStation Network on April 19, stole personal data, and forced Sony to rebuild its network from the ground up--a process that is still going on.

Sony has denied Stafford's claims, but other experts who spoke with PCWorld doubt that Sony took every precaution that it could have.

"Everything I've seen suggests that this very, very much could have been prevented," said Stan Stahl, president of the Los Angeles chapter of the Information Systems Security Association, which organizes conferences for security experts."

Pcworld isn't exactly the gaming media and I'm not sure what axe Stafford has to grind against Sony but if he is willing to testify in front of Congress they must of kicked his dog really hard or something.

edit:  Also, I never claimed Sony was negligent I was merely looking at the analogy put forth By hepcat about a negligent homeowner leaving their window unlcoked.

Still down in Norway. Not that I care much. I pretty much never play multiplayer anyway.

They still haven't announced what the Welcome Back package will be.  Kaz's message from yesterday said that would coming in a couple days.

Since the PSN store won't be open until the end of the month, it's a bit premature to expect announcements about it just yet. You never know though.
