You know... all this debate and it suddenly occurred to me.    We are living in a gaming nirvana right now.    Perhaps never before in console history has there been 3 such solid and bleeding edge consoles.

Instead of fighting about it, we should be marveling about how it's great to be a gamer right now.    I guess the only footnote of that statement would be the seeming decline of PC games, but I hold out hope that a couple titles this summer could breathe life into that as well.

Competition between these systems are pushing games, interfaces, and techonologies to the edge, and giving the consumer more than ever before.   More choices, more genres, more game selection, and everything.

This is ALLLLLL good fellas.... and in my idea scenario, I'd like to see all three neck and neck so that they continue this trend.

This I can agree with. icon_biggrin However, I also think that each can appeal to a different gaming audience, which is a win-win for everyone as well.

I don't know.... I think we can all agree that the competition is doing great things for consumers.   It's really a win-win for us.

That is unless you are a communist, then you disagree with this whole premise.....   slywink

Your thread is doomed. Just like the PStripplicious.

I kid. I kid. If you have thousands of dollars you have yourself gaming nirvana. I'm holding out for a holodeck, personally. Then maybe I can beat Kid Icarus.

To an extent it is good, but for me, money is too tight to own three systems, and due to the 360 being the first out of the gate I picked it up.  Even if I wanted a PS3 and a Wii, my money is spread to thin.  The cost of entry for these new consoles is just so high.  Other than graphics I don't see competition pushing much (Wii controls aside, which honestly was Nintendo's only chance at surviving in my opinion outside of the handheld market).  We aren't seeing a whole lot of innovation in actual gameplay in all honesty.

Well, I'm a communist, but only in regards to the necessities of life, so that really makes me more of a socialist I suppose. But it's moot to this discussion. icon_wink

I understand what msduncan is saying.  Never in my wildest dreams when I was playing my Atari 2600/5200, Sega Master System, Sega Game Gear, Commodore Amiga & 64 and my screaming 386SX/16MHz computer, did I ever think that as an adult I would be playing the likes of what we have available today.  Even more so the incredible tehnological leaps and bounds in graphics, gameplay & physics, sound and story.  I could have never imagined wandering the incredible realistic world of Oblivion when I was playing Ultima Underworld.

These definitely are great times and I feel privileged to experience them because I was there during the days of Atari and 286/386 computers!  What boggles my mind is to wonder what my kids will be experiencing in terms of games when they become adults!  icon_eek  Our Gears of War/Oblivion's will become their Ultima Underwords in the future.

Agreed, while we can debate each platforms pros and cons all day long, there's no debating that it's great to have so many strong consoles to choose from.

Heck, I even think PC gaming is doing pretty darn well.  There have been some great titles out lately and several more on the way.  And I sincerely believe Live will only help when a critical mass moves to Vista.  Between my 360 and PC alone I have an overwhelming number of choices.

Everyone's hugging!

Starshifter and I were just talking about this the other day.  Between the PC and 360 alone, there simply isn't enough time to play the games we want to play.  There is a lot of great stuff out there right now.

Agreed.

Unfortunately, while I'm never gameless, I don't have the free time required to play all of my games/consoles.

im going to be the jerk to disagree smile

i dont think sony and microsoft compete - i think they are effectively EXACTLY the same console (as far as games go).  i think the ps3 could be called the xbox360, and the 360 could be the ps3.  they are for all practical purposes the same system playing the same games (sans a handful of exclusives).  in fact, i wish there were a ps360 available to play all games, because there is no technical or interface innovation - so i may as well be able to play all games on one system.  and because the 360 and ps3 DONT want to compete as systems - what do they do?  they throw out boatloads of cash to developers to lock up exclusive titles.  the consumer is harmed, because had she just been able to buy one system to play all these games, she would have been much better off.  developers are harmed, because rather than spend money innovating and taking chances, they have to spend it on ports of the exact same game for systems that are functionally exactly the same (as far as playing games goes)

and nintendo chose not to compete, by releasing a system playing by its own rules, creating a new market for a new type of system.
