Nobody mentioned the major changes - they changed the name from "PLAYSTATION 3" to "PlayStation 3" and they changed the PS3 logo. Who cares about a price drop when there are capitalization changes!

I still don't have a current console (the XBox360's noise level and Red Rings of Death scared me off for years), so this makes things at least... interesting for me. The lack of PS2 compatability wouldn't bother me at this point.
This is where I am at as well. Never made the next gen plunge and this and an inevitable XBOx price drop look might enticing. Now just need to decide which to get?

Both are pretty even now. The Xbox Pro/Elite is dropping to $300, however the gimped xbox, the arcade, will remain at $200 with no hard drive.
Both now have an extensive library of rather good games.

So what do you do if you have a PS3, but want to buy a slim? Can you recover your account (like the 360) and download all your stuff to the new machine?
Just sign on the new PS3 with the same account you used on the old one and you're golden, trophies and everything. No recovery required. Then you can go back to the PSN store, check your download history and redownload whatever you need. Thanks, next Q: Can I use two PS3's with the same ID? Like if I moved one upstairs to be a blu-ray player for a bedroom? Yes, you can. And from what I recall, if one is logged into the PSN when you sign onto the second one, the first is logged out. I do this all the time but generally don't have both on at the same time. I'll have to conduct a little 'speriment when I get home. Confirmed.

Wow the PS3 slim is...not so slim.
Dammit I wish Sony had come out with the new slim and the price drop a little earlier so Microsoft had time to drop the price before I went back to Japan. Oh well- I suppose I can still pick one up if I come back for Christmas.

PSP go at 250$ and ps3 at 300$. Still waiting on that software PS2 emulation to pop up from 'em.
Why dont you just keep your ps2 or buy a new one ? I always keep my consoles. Actually, I've a launch PS3 so backwards compatibility is not a factor for me personally. I was more making a toss away comment over wanting them to implement software emulation for the potential "filter" hijinks that you'd normally be able to do on the PC side.

Aesthetically, it's like they've gone from sleek to functional. Ugh. The PS2 slim was a pretty good looking machine.

Here's your toss away comment, but you're not going to like it: "It’s not coming back, so let me put that on the table," Koller states. "It’s not as big as a purchase intent driver as you may be hearing. We’ve got such a substantial lineup of titles on the PS3; most people are buying the PS3 for PS3 games. They’ve buying it for PS3 games and Blu-ray movies.
That won’t be returning."

I'm sure I will get a PS3 Slim someday, mostly for a few of it's exclusive games. I'll get rid of my original PS2, but keep the Slim PS2 since it occupies such little space, so no BC issues for me, sort of. I may wait a while, just in case there are RRoD-type reports that surface after people start using them - but it's now officially on my radar!

I hope price drop means also price drop for PS3 repair. $150.00 for repair is still too much for poor person like me.

That is exactly how I'd set up my personal BC PC2/3 - well, only if you can actually put something on top of the PS3 without causing excess heat or other fussiness! Plus, that way it will look a little less like a George Foreman grill.

I was really leaning towards getting the new slim but I found the 160GB Drakes bundle for $340 and got it instead. I don't care about the size and I was a little worried about heat in ver 1 of the new slim (remember v1 of the slim ps2). It seemed like a good deal to get the extra 40GB, Drake's fortune and the downland game for an extra $40.

I'm hearing some ugly rumours about a new processor, and some new sound system in the slim model as well...
I hope we dont get games now that only plays on the Slim version....
edit: Since this was told to me by a friend in the software business, I have no link to back it up with :-D

The slim can bitstream some codecs the original model couldn't but haven't heard much other than that and that seems to fall into the 'audiophile camp' IMHO. Oh, plus it supports Bravialink, for whatever that is worth. And I don't really see much chance of "slim only" games as there's no architectural differences between the two - not that Sony is immune to stupid but that would seem pretty stupid to me.

Can the slim stream the codecs because of FW3 or only because it's the slim? Anyone know when the new firmware will be available for the older models?

All models will get the new firmware, the slim has those abilities because it has a newer HDMI chip in it. Here is a blog entry on 3.0 but all it says is "soon".

[Ben Stein]Oh, avatars, yay[/ben stein] I hate the current avatars, so I'm actually interested in getting a halfway decent one. BTW, I don't think they mean avatars in the Wii/NXE way. From the stuff I saw, it looks like it'll just be icons.

Plus 'premium' ones as well, if you had some strange hanker'n to actually pay for one.
