Now that it's official, how could anyone have doubted this for a second? Cliche be damned, if it's on the Internet it must be true.

So aside from being slim, what other changes were made to the PS3?

I'm not sure I like the new design, but at least it has explicit buttons on there for power and eject. Never did like the flat surface for that sort of thing. A couple comparison images ganged from Amazon:

Um for some reason the phrase, "a day late and a buck short", comes to mind. As a happy B/C original 60 Gig owner the only thing I can say that makes the newer model nicer is the matte finish. I hate the dust absorbing gloss on the originals.

i take it this will (eventually)become the 'one and only' PS3,no different HDD size crap or features taken out etc..i mean how many PS3s have there been??
and isn't the PS2 still selling decently well?..i can't see the PS2 emulation until the sales of the PS2 drop

I could care less about BC. I have a PS2 that I never use.
This coupled with the price drop, will be my reason to finally get a PS3. Basically I just want a Blu-Ray player, and the ability to stream media makes it a no-brainer at that price.

I'm considering selling my 60 gig and getting this one. I like the matte finish, Bravia remote capability, and 120 gig drive.
For as much as I use my PS3 I'm just not sure it's worth all of the effort.

Nice move on Sony's part, and I think MS better have a real price drop to counter this (I don't count eliminating the Pro and dropping the Elite down to $300 as a real price drop). I also think Nintendo should lower the price of the Wii, though I expect it to still hold on to first place even without it. But, I don't think the Wii will dominate the others like the last 2 holidays without a cut.
As for me, this just comes too late. I own a Blu-Ray player and own a 360, so even a $300 PS3 isn't as tempting as it would have been. Sony just doesn't have exclusives I care about at this point. Still, dropping the price a $100 is something Sony REALLY needed to do, and if they ever add PS2 backwards compatibility back I may re-evaluate. I expect this to boost PS3 sales in a big way this holiday...

So what do you do if you have a PS3, but want to buy a slim? Can you recover your account (like the 360) and download all your stuff to the new machine?

I'm thinking of getting a blu-ray player and I'm still on the fence about this. If they had this price drop three months ago I would have jumped on it, but now I can get a blu-ray player for $140. I guess I'm just not that excited by the PS3 exclusives and since I already have an x-box it just seems redundant. Still, it does have me thinking about the PS3 which I wasn't before the price drop so I'm sure a lot of people are going to get one as a result. Hell, I'm probably 50/50 at this point.

Just sign on the new PS3 with the same account you used on the old one and you're golden, trophies and everything. No recovery required. Then you can go back to the PSN store, check your download history and redownload whatever you need.

one other aspect to the slim, and this time it's a negative. for the 2 people who used the 'install other OS' option, know that the slim will not have it. which kind of sucks, in a way, but eh, if i was going to put linux on the ps3 i have, i would have done it already.
i do think it could have been cool though.
any comparison shots of this vs the ps2 slim? i could get that one standing up under the ledge of my tv stand.

I do this all the time but generally don't have both on at the same time. I'll have to conduct a little 'speriment when I get home.

Sony visited Endgadget and they've done an unboxing and all the details (apologies if someone else posted, I didn't see anything when doing searches): http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/18/playstation-3-slim-unboxing-and-hands-on/It seems to have a smaller power supply (250W vs. 280W), so I wonder if it runs any cooler. I still don't have a current console (the XBox360's noise level and Red Rings of Death scared me off for years), so this makes things at least... interesting for me. The lack of PS2 compatability wouldn't bother me at this point.

So, only slightly smaller and no BC.. I see no reason to throw money Sonys way this time around. Now if it was the size of those fake mockups I might, maybe that'll come further down the road.

Maybe I was thinking the size difference would be similar to when the PS2 went slim.

Being one of the two people that installed another OS I think this is a bad move. The PS3 to me is a bluray player and a Linux box, the occasional game that was only on the PS3 I wanted to try. It is great to have basically a computer on my tv with the firefox browser to access the web better than the built in crappy browser that sony has. For someone that wants a gaming system and a computer this is a great deal, play PS3 game and use a computer in one. It is a great way to play with linux also if you always wanted to.

PSP go at 250$ and ps3 at 300$. That is awesome. Yeah, I really don't get this one either. Sony is just asking for a failure of the PSP Go right off the bat. And here's another price quote I found elsewhere on the 'net: 2 years, 9 months, and 7 days after the PS3 launched, it's finally available for the price that both the PS1 and PS2 launched at. And Sony wonders why the PS3 hasn't been the smashing success that its older siblings were.
