My wife bought me a slim for my birthday last week, and she told me she had a hell of a time finding one. She ended up getting me one at Costco (which came with Drakes Fortune [*bonus!*] and the PS3 remote (I will be exchanging that for credit)). Anyway, I believe I read on DQ that Sony claims it's a shortage of components which makes some sense since they sold a ton of PS3s in the final 3 months of 2009. Hope you can find one soon.

They might also be doing a small update to the hardware, nothing big, just fixes such as that particular PS3 killing chip fiasco. Similar to how there's been lots of smaller 360 revisions. The delay could be small retooling and finding new parts.
Also, GDC and the like are coming up, which means big announcements. Could be something else coming up and tied to this new motion controller.
I also do not believe for a second that there's really a component shortage. It's just likely they're trying to shave off that extra few dollars somehow or have something else planned. They've used this excuse plenty of times before just before putting out a revision.

I'm with turtle in thinking they're getting rid of supply to announce a new SKU at GDC next week.

Perhaps a new SKU with bundled camera and motion controller, oh and LBP or some other set of motion controlled games? The system itself would be mostly the same as the current slim, but with a few more cost cutting measures so they start breaking even on each PS3 sold.
GDC would be a good place to announce it, along with a new SDK openly available to developers.
We can expect similar announcements from Microsoft with Natal.

I considered carefully. This is more of a family friendly site than OO, so I figured I better censor it.

Actually, when I went looking for my PS3 Slim a couple weeks ago I couldn't find the 120gb anywhere and, according to the Gamespot guys, they had a ton of people asking about them. 250gb's were plentiful and that's what I went with and I'm quite glad I did.

I got the 120GB when Dell had the 25% off special (right when it also dropped $100 too) and it's been fine through the chip issues. Also, I would reconsider trading in the remote as I've heard it's fantastic for any movie watching.

Sony's explanation to retailers, from what I understand, is that the rise in popularity of netbooks has resulted in parts shortages particularly in the off-the-shelf components of the hard drives they use in the PS3. There are three or four times as many companies trying to get some clip type assembly as there were last year and it is likely to be late March before they can begin shipping again regularly. This may or may not be bullshit, but it's what I'm hearing from a corporate buyer friend.

Amazon seems to have them. Not a ton and they are limiting the purchases to one per household, but they seem to have them. Even Prime eligible.
