I am not sure where the actual chart is, but this link at Kotaku mentions that actual numbers were leaked for last week. In week 3, the PS3 only manged 17,000 units, a rather tremendous drop-off. Is the UK gaming community to small, or is the price simply too high? I am honestly curious, because I did not expect Sony to struggle so much with the international launch.

Wasn't the price for the PS3 lowered in the UK already?

It burned like magnesium; the 360 is more of a slow burn. (heat joke folks... if you don't get it, wrap a towel around your console. Tongue)

Cute. biggrin

That said - all the people who wanted to buy a PS3 have now bought one, and as thus, it's just not selling.

It's the exact same thing in Japan when they move less than 20k units a week.

i have also heard a few people have taken back their consoles,as they are having trouble connecting to Home, when contacted Sony, they said that they are aware of the problem....one guy i was talking to said there were 3 people in front of him taking their consoles back in the store as well...whether they had the same problem i dont know.
Here in the UK,i think you have 21 days for a refund,no questions asked, even if you just dont like the console/game...as long as it is in mint condition of course

as for the gaming community,i think its a fairly decent size, for the size of the country at least anyway

But seriously folks, obviously Sony cannot abandon the platform.  So is the idea and hope that once the titles are released sales will spike?

I'm not that familiar with console releases, so is this completely contrary to the sales cycle- that so soon after release (and availability) that sales drop so enormously?

One thing's for sure, it'll be easier than ever to estimate how much of a system seller the big releases later this year are.  When Lair or whatever's next is released, it'll practically be a 1:1 ratio of games:systems sold.

well, the economy just doesn't have enough secondary jobs for everyone to get so they can buy a PS3.  That's the flaw in Crazy Kens plan  icon_wink

Question:  Do the games use Blu-Ray format for the actual games?

I was thinking maybe Sony could release a PS3-Lite, strip out everything they can, toss in a wired controller, and push it out as a "New Alternative" to the PS3 priced at only $299-399 or something.

They aren't going to get anywhere as they are going.

PS3 games are being put on Blu Ray discs, so you do need the Blu Ray to read the discs.  They have more storage space for the game developers to fill with sloppy code  icon_wink

Well that might not have been the best move for them..  In fact, I think Bluray was a horrible idea for their console.

Imagine if they'd released the PS3 in the $200-300 pricepoint as a nice substantial upgrade to the PS2 without the added cost of Bluray.  I don't think anyone could argue that we'd all be playing PS3's right now.. I know I would have skipped the PS2 last Christmas, and went right into the PS3 myself.

This has to go down as one of the worst business decisions ever.

Sadly, blu-ray was only one of the reasons why it became so expensive to manufacture.  Even if they could switch to a DVD drive, I don't think they'd drop the price from $600.

You fail the internet!

ATB, I was under the impression that the core processor was much more expensive, and that it wasn't becoming cheaper to manufacture as quickly as they had anticipated.

Well, there just arent many games out that are enticing people to purchase the console - simple as that.

As soon as some high-profile quality games come out, people WILL be purchasing the PS3.

Blu-ray (and HD_DVD) uses a blue laser diode with a shorter wavelength than the regular red laser diodes.  The shorter wavelength allows for more information to be stored on a disk of the same size.  However, these have proven costly to mass-produce.  It was the shortages of the blue diodes that caused the initial delays in the production of the PS3.

I think the cell processors are also expensive, but it was my understanding that the diode shortages were primarily responsible for the delays and cost overruns.

I'd say if you compared the population of the UK with the US, those numbers are probably about the same relatively speaking as the numbers here. Basically just like over here after the hardcore fans get one most of the population is pretty cool to the idea of getting one till more games come out and/or a better price happens.

Sadly, blu-ray was only one of the reasons why it became so expensive to manufacture.

Explain.

Because Sony spent over 2 billion dollars to develop the blu-ray technology they have to recoup their money somehow hence the $600 Blu-ray player (cough) I mean PS3.

The UK gaming community isn't too small, and the price isn't too high - there just aren't very many compelling reasons to pick up a PS3 right now.

In about 6 months to a year, I guarantee that won't be the case.
