Riot breaks out at Best Buy over PS3!

Holy shit. Holy fucking shit.

It's a God Damned GAME SYSTEM for Christ's sake. What the hell has this world come to!

It's not a game system anymore.  It's basically a free $1500 profit.  I consider myself a pretty hardcore gamer but I had no idea that the 360 was going to be a huge thing on Ebay and I didn't pick up on that then I'm pretty sure that most casual gamers never thought of it either.  But now everyone and their grandmother want to sell one on Ebay.  Just one more thing to blame the evil Microsoft empire on.  mad  Of course, console makers could also get their shit together and actually make sure that they have a decent stock available before they release.

Well yes, but that goes without saying. =P

woot, sacramento made the news! (well Elk Grove, but it's the same thing)

New PS3 consoles stolen at gunpoint

Some people can't wait: Two gunmen stormed an Elk Grove store Thursday morning and made off with four coveted PlayStation 3 video game consoles, a day before they were to go on sale.

The two robbers, wearing ski masks and black jackets and described as 6-foot-3, hit the GameStop on Laguna Boulevard about 10:30 a.m., according to Elk Grove police. They left without injuring customers or employees.

The robbers at GameStop also stole several 2005 model Microsoft Xbox 360 game systems. But those are so last year.

IF you can get into their site (it's obviously hammered right now) you can go to www.costco.com and order a PS3, an extra controller, and Genji for $700 (the $600 console). I actually got to the 'Add to Cart' screen, but I'm still not interested in an overpriced console.

Anyone that gets a PS3 and DOESN'T sell it on Ebay has a logic issue.  The things can fetch $8000.00 right now, and you CANNOT tell me some of the people that get one don't already have shelves of unplayed games for other systems to tide them over.  That 8K will buy 12 units sometime next year.

Sometimes I think some people feed off the gloat of being the "First" on the block.  Not sure why, never could understand that.

I totally agree.  The price of the thing is just too high.  I waited for the PS2, got it for $150 and the games were just as good as the games were when the system was $300.  Why pay more than $300 or so for this one?  Wait, get it in a few years and enjoy.  In the mean time, grab one of the other cheaper ones and you will  not miss but a few exclusives.  My two cents anyway.

Sorry, was being sarcastic.  I wasn't attacking you, just those people that do sell consoles and then call out other random people on it that they see in the news, or on forums.  Personally, I think anyone keeping a system and not selling it for the markups is nuts smile.

There are some really stupid, stupid people in this world.  Anyone who shells out more than launch price for a PS3 is a tool, plain and simple.  If you have to have one that bad, you have a serious problem that needs addressing.

I'm not sure how many going at that price are sold to 'real' buyers, but even the $2000 point they were going at before it seemed there were a lot of 'inflaters' out there was absolutely crazy.

I wanted the 360 and hung on to it, but if I'd gotten home and they'd been $2000 (or more) on EBay?  I'd have had to list it...

And BTW - I guarantee that the $8000 sale is somebody throwing off the real sale of the console. On the other hand, any sale that goes through in the $1500 to $2500 range is legit. Still insane though, IMHO.

I hate to break this to you guys, but there are people out there who have kids who want a PS3, will not care to get one until the last minute, and have the completely huge money bags to just casually find one on Ebay for whatever amount people are charging. They will sell for $15,000 or something to real people soon.

Im not condoning Ebay the PS3's on launch week, but if any of these people were really smart, they'd hold on to them the week before X-Mas and catch all the trophy wives and desperate parents who refuse to let their kids down. Since Sony has proven that they make almost 100,000 PS3's a week, the stock issues won't be near as prevelent, and this zerg over it now will die out before next week.

Good humor! The site is now "closed". What a great idea this was!

Costco: Let's avoid all the problems and sell our PS3s online only!

Result: Site overwhelmed, crashes, shutting down online shopping for however long it takes to fix the mess.

You know what needs to be done in response to these damn PS3 auctions? We need to create bogus Ebay accounts and flood the auctions with bogus bids.

Yeah because *that* would be productive.  And also, because it isn't being done by hundreds of immature tools already.

Once mine actually ships from Costco, and my 3 hour shopping experience, I'll definitely be testing the ebay waters.  I'd probably be more comfortable with a cash deal via Craig's List, but I'm sure people would much rather be using the plastic.  I'm still not 100% sure that my order is 100% done though.  Hope for the best, expect the worst I guess.

Hey, I respect the right of some profiteering individual to make use of the American Capitalist system to engage in console scalping asshattery.  But only as long as you respect my right to make use of the International Internet system to engage in general numbnut asshattery.  God forbid the scalpers have to wade through some bogus bids to earn their $1,500 profit.

1) I disagree with the fake bidders more than I do the sellers. They may be preventing someone who legititmately want one at $1500 or whatever.
2) Many of the sellers are starting bids around $700. reasonable. Yes they may expect the bidding to go higher, but they are not forcing it.
3) If I had gotten a PS3, I would have Ebayed it. The way I see it is that if someone wants to pay $1500+ for one, they want it a lot more than I do, so they can have mine...
4) There's nothing I really want for the PS3 (Want to try resistance and Gundam though). If I had Ebayed one, I could have put some money on the side to get one later since it would have been kinda free for me at tthat point, so the PS3 would have had 1 more customer to buy the games and such.

And yet another news article that shows just how desperate people are for a console (to more than likely sell):

Quote
Some kids in another car apparently saw the whole thing. The guy breaking into the car acted as if it were his own, patting his pockets as if checking for keys, then with a sigh retrieved a smallish sledgehammer and proceeded to smash the window open with it, full in the view of half of the Best Buy PS3 line. Finding nothing in the backseat, he opened the front door, flipped open the trunk, and that's where we came in.

The cops arrived minutes later to take the report. There was no way they were catching the guys with the description we had. Dave called his insurance company and then drove off into the night, leaving me with a nagging question. Why break into a car at a Best Buy where the PS3 hadn't been released yet? It made no sense. The, with a chill, it dawned on me. Dave had come from the midnight launch. These guys followed him across town.

Scary, no?

I think the fake bidders are actually making it worse (unless they put in a crazy silly bid like $10,000 and up)...  If someone genuinely wants one at $2500, they may 'have' to go up to $3000 to actualy secure one.  I'm not really feeling badly for a bidder who has that sort of problem, but it's making the demand appear even higher than it actually is, and will make the next time around potentially even worse.

LOL, why should someone respect someone who intentionally violates the rules of eBay, and wants nothing more than to piss all over someone who is doing absolutely nothing wrong? Think about it:

1. Person legitimately buys a PS3, puts it on eBay, goes through the motions, person buys it for "X" amount, pays for it, seller ships it, all are happy. Nobody is doing anything wrong.

2. Person buys a PS3, puts in on eBay, yadda, yadda, morons bid it up to $7,000, don't pay, seller not happy.

Guess which scenario has someone doing something wrong.

Come on guys, exhibit just a thimbles worth of maturity. Is that too much to ask?

Immature tools?

Hey, I respect the right of some profiteering individual to make use of the American Capitalist system to engage in console scalping asshattery.  But only as long as you respect my right to make use of the International Internet system to engage in general numbnut asshattery.  God forbid the scalpers have to wade through some bogus bids to earn their $1,500 profit.

I don't consider myself to be an immature tool but y'know... fuck them fuckers.

What a completely infantile and naive way of looking at the basic tenants of capitalism. Why try to fuck over the auction system for everyone?

And on a side note-this ps3 launch has climbed so high on the absurd-o-meter I think it will never recover.

Guess which scenario has someone doing something wrong.
It's neither or both, your pick.

That's a sample of dozens of reports about these wholesome folks who are just acquiring PS3s to finance their kids' education or pay for their grandmother's operations or some bullshit.  But e-bayers who post bogus bids are the ones in the wrong here.  Seriously.

And "ruin the auction system for everyone"??  C'mon... Captain Hyperbole to the rescue.

Honestly, there's no reason to be so hostile.  E-bay asshattery is a non-violent response to violent actions.  Relax, man.  You'll get your cash.

all I see is people excited about the money they can make, who is exactly excited by the system?  I know I am not, I'll let it mature and make a decision in 6 months or so.

I don't think that the articles are relevant. They describe some people commiting crimes and such and also some people acting like asshats. that doesn't justify tanking an auction for someone who may or may not be one of these people. Also, remember that bad news is more popular than good news. These thing are a small percentage compared to the whole country. I talked to employees at several establishments that I went to scout out and they almost all sadi that other than a few isolated incidents with individuals who were then removed, all the people on line have acted respectable.
