PS3 Launch - Spectacular, or Speculator?

Tried to pre-order for myself but didn't get one at the time.  Friend had pre-order for a unit he was going to sell me (at cost) but the store claims they only got one unit in (yep he was #2 on the list).  Right now I'm pretty happy with missing out, my HDTV is 1080i only and the scaling issues with the PS3 bother me plus the lack of any real catchy launch titles makes waiting no big deal to me.  All that being said I'm pretty sure if I ran into a PS3 in the wild while hunting a Wii, I'd pick it up as I'm a sucker for shiny things, perhaps my screenname should be changed to Magpie

I voted speculate, but I was also interested in getting two so I could maybe keep one and sell the other.

Yeah, blah blah $500 or $600 system -- I paid $2200 for a new gaming computer a year ago, yet I don't see many people bitching about the price of top of the line hardware...

Then you aren't paying quite enough attention. Gaming rig prices-especially top of the line vid cards and chips have been out of control for several years, and are probably at least one factor pushing people towards consoles.

Personally I'm just not interested in the PS3.  That could change in a year or two, but certainly not at this price point.

I am quite content with the 360.  I'm not saying it's better, but it serves my needs.  I have really enjoyed playing my DS and PSP along with more casual stuff like Guitar Hero.  Plus, I think my tremendous backlog of PS2 RPG's could very well last me until well into the PS4 generation.

I will wait for a price drop. Love a lot of the tech behind it, but can afford it. I spent less than what the 60 gb version costs for all my Wii stuff and I've got a ton of games as what have you. Plus, I was able to wait on a sweet 360 deal, I can wait for PS3.

All of my machines are what I would classify as good gaming rigs, and run stuff mostly maxed at our native resolution, and I don't think any one of them would be over $800 new (3700+ San Diegos, 7800/7900GTs, 1GB DDR). The only thing that will push me to a console are great games, I think most people are pushed by the games, not by cost.

I wouldn't pay much over retail.  I figure the $150 or so covers a) my impatience, and b) the time involved for me in trying to find one, going to wherever I may need to go to purchase it, and... CA sales tax

I have no issues paying a semi-nominal fee for convenience and to overcome my extreme impatience.

There's this smll town in Arizona, I'm not saying where i case I decide to go eBay crazy and get one (or more) to sell.  this friend of mine was up there today and decided to stop at this new Wal*Mart they have there.  It's pretty out of the way, and it's pretty slow. 
This friend of mine stops by electronics and looks at the PS3 case.  WTF!?!?! 

"Is that the PS3?"

"Yeah"

"That's really it?  Not a display box?"

"Yep, that's them... we only sold one.  We got ten in."

So, yes, there is a Wal*Mart sitting in the middle of nowhere, Arizona... with PS3's in stock. 

and yes, I trust what this guy tells me, so I don't doubt it at all.

I made a half-hearted effort to get one for speculation...

No interest in the PS3 at this point.  If Blue Ray 'wins' over HD DVD I could see buying one over a 'proper' Blue Ray player, after a price drop or two.
